The Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 Explorer dial features a blue sunburst Explorer style tri-Arabic (3 6 9) numeral dial. This COSC certified Swiss chronometer is powered by a Rolex in house caliber 3130 automatic movement with hacking seconds, overcoil hairspring, and 48-hour power reserve. This Rolex Oyster case and Twinlock crown enable 100-meter water resistance .
Each Rolex Oyster Perpetual recalls the glory days of the original Rolex "Bubbleback" of the 1930s; these were the first watches to be built with Rolex's Oyster water resistant case and "perpetual" automatic winding system. The legacy of the Rolex "Explorer" 3--6-9 dial is tied to the 1953 exploits of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. Moreover, Ian Fleming's literary treatment of James Bond obliquely references the Rolex Oyster Perpetual - not the Submariner - as the watch of choice for Agent 007.
This Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 Explorer Dial 116000 is encased in 36mm of stainless steel surrounding a blue dial on a steel Oyster bracelet. Functions include hours, minutes, and seconds. The watch also measures 11.7mm in thickness and 44.1mm from lug-to-lug.

Bought the same OP six weeks ago. Beautiful watch. I also have an Explorer 114270 from 2004 but this OP has a bigger dial, beefier lugs and a bracelet with a solid clasp. This is a much more substantial watch than the Explorer. The Explorer feels like you're wearing a vintage watch compared to this OP. I believe this 116000 OP has what they call a 'maxi case'. The new 36mm 126000 OP has slimmer lugs than this version. The 116000 is lovely looking and beautifully made BUT as I have a few really nice vintage Omegas, which I love, I do prefer the lightness, comfort and feel on the wrist of my Explorer. There's just something about that earlier little 36mm Explorer that is timeless and appealing.

I’ve had the 2010-2015 Explorer l with 3-6-9 in white gold. Loved everything about it I actually have to say this is awesomely done. It’s my next watch. Thanks for the fine review (as always). I saw one were a watchmaker installed the Explorer hands and it was spot on. Love the Explorer look.

I was on the fence between this one and the white grape version. I ultimately chose the version presented here. This watch is such a quality product and, at the same time, completely flies under the radar. Tim is right, you could live just with that one watch because it's so versatile. And you can even take it swimming!

sik853 you still enjoying it? I just bought one and it arrives in a few days. I was so close to getting a 36mm Explorer but I’ve had so many Rolex sports models and I wanted to try something different. I haven’t actually tried it in person before, so it’s a risk, but something tells me I’ll like it. It looks so versatile.

@@wqsnsr8 I absolutely love it. Over the years I’ve owned Lange, FP Journe, AP, IWC…basically everything you can think of, and this might be my favourite watch I’ve ever owned. It’s perfect for me. The 36mm Explorer is very very similar, so either watch will be a great choice, but i move that the 3-6-9 Oyster Perpetual isn’t as common, and I love the blue dial. I’m wearing it as I type this comment!

I bought this a month ago after seeing this review and I can attest- this is an absolute beauty. I haven't taken it off my wrist since then. Flys completely under the radar and not flashy at all. I think this is perfect until 7 inch wrist. Simple and clean rolex.

I had the same choice, and I went with this one. I’ve owned a lot of black dial Rolex steel sports watches, so thought I’d go with the blue dial and slightly dressier look, and I don’t regret it at all. It’s a perfect daily watch.

This and the Explorer are the same watch. In fact both are just a flavor of Datejust except with no date. All Rolex watches of this type are the same, just the dial and hands are different..

I'm stuck between this and the explorer- this makes more sense as I prefer the size, it's a grand cheaper on grey market and I already have a black dial watch (speedy pro). But the explorer has a certain X factor that I'm not sure this does. I worry I'd tire of it over time. It's the head choice but the explorer is the heart choice.... I think...

i looked at the explorer 39mm before deciding on getting this oyster perpetual. The size of the watch and bezel just don't seem right on the explorer. The 36mm explorer looks so much better, i didnt get that because i wanted a modern Rolex with the same look and the closest thing is the blue 36mm oyster perpetual albeit with a better bracelet.

I thought the same thing. The closest is the Explorer 1 that has the same dial in black. The modern versions are 39mm but you can get older versions in 36mm

I'm gonna go with the OP 116000 than the explorer: great solid bracelet. Domed polished bezel. white indice with 369 and rolex logo as 12 o clock index. Milled clasp rather than a stamped folded clasp on explorer. Only down side is that the value doesn't keep as well as the explorer, which has gained more exposure throughout the years due to simply, lack of a proper name, oyster perpetual 36mm is my everyday watch!

I have a 16570, which is easily my favorite Rolex Sports model (and I have had them all, save for the Milgauss), but at the price they are going these days, I would easily pick this 116000 over it. It is cheaper, with a better built quality.

THIS .. the white dial has wierd double baton hour Mark's for 693 this has nicer golden Arabic.. which not only looks nicer but also will he easier to read as our brains are used to Arabic numbers.. and sticks will always be sticks .. in relation to other sticks and its position can you even tell the time ..however if you want a pure dress watch thsn maybe white is better ... but if you want a dress watch Go for glashutte or worst case jlc
