I have 8 of the Rolex green suede watch pouches like the Tudor one you have. I've got a couple from Rolex services and I have a good relationship with my Rolex watchmaker so he has given me some as gifts over the years. I also have the Rolex knife, pen, key ring, couple hats, calendar etc. as free gifts with new watch purchases. As a tip my wrist is 7.25 inches so it fits on the inner card without bending it but you can always open the dive extension to store it flat in the pouch or open the easy link on newer non-dive watches.
structural engineer here, steel has different regions of stress, there is a region where you can apply some stress and it is elastic, so you can apply stress to it, deform the metal and the metal will go back its it's original shape. There is a point for steel called the yield strength, once you pass that level of stress the metal permanently deforms. Think about a paperclip, if you use it with a small amount of paper, like 3 sheets or something, the paperclip returns to it's original form. If you put a fat stack of papers then the paperclip passes yield strength and it's permanently deformed. I'm guessing that pouch bag insert would not reach that point to permanently stretch the bracelet.
I’ve seen them use the vertical Rolex pouch for Tudor repairs (biggest Rolex dealer in The Netherlands; you might know them). And the Grand Seiko repair box (yes a small “box”) really blows the Rolex and Tudor pouches out of the water. I’ve had the misery to visit a RSC personally within a day after buying a watch in two occasions and in different countries (as I bought them taxfree at the airport). And the GS bracelet was incorrectly shortened so it literally almost fell of my wrist. Got a completely new bracelet. So I acquired knowledge on RSC’s in multiple countries and quality of service for major watch brands including the service pouches/boxes used. Quite an interesting collection.
Also if you have a watch that is running fast or slow the way you put it down at night will change it. Eg flat, crown down or flat side down +/- 3-4 secs (overnight) believe it or not...worth experimenting.
Great video, I always wrap my Rolex with a deerskin cloth when I put them into a pouch or a travel case, I totally get what you're saying. I like to do that so when I lay it down on the nightstand at the hotel I can cover the top and bottom of the watch.
Hi Austin ! Good points you make there...I just cut the suede cardboard bit in order to fit the size of the bracelet. It works well. I also wrap a soft microfiber cloth around the cardboard part to make it feel like a small cushion....then I insert the whole thing / watch into the pouch....Really OCD....hahah !
Love the way you had to get the dial facing upwards like the watch has feelings lol, Personally I’d only use those for bringing my watch home then transport them in a proper case,I agree with the other comments though, loosen the glide lock to remove tension.
To lessen the pressure, if you expect to store a watch for an extended period an idea might be to add more links to the bracelet and/or use the dive extension if the bracelet has one.
Hi Austin. On the interior snap piece, why not place the watch in the sleeve so the crystal faces the back of the sleeve - opposite the snap. The bracelet may be close, but not the crystal. Thanks for the video!
Nobody if forcing you to use the piece of cardboard that comes with the pouch; Use the pouch and replace the cardboard part with something cylindrical and softer that will put less tension on the bracelet, or... You know, don't use the RSC pouch for storing watches. We pay a lot of money for watches and straps so a few $ for a nice pouch shouldn't be a problem. All of these seem cheap and nothing more than a little bit of protection to get the watch home safe after picking it up after a service. I enjoyed the video but you're overthinking this. :D
Very cool Austin. I hope to get a pouch some day when I service my watches. For now I use the Everest suede pouches. They’re not expensive and come in different colors.
I just got my 116710LN back from overhaul. It came in a nice green suede style pouch. It wasn’t a square one it was rectangular in shape. Similar in shape to the plastic one you showed but it had a button snap to close the flap. EDIT: I posted this before finishing the video. The one I have it’s just like the tudor one and you showed a pic of the Rolex version.
You used to get them at RSC when the watch came back from a service. But people flip them so you can find them at pre-owned watch shops and auction sites.
Maker watch products sells a case that Omega and Longine use.... it’s much better that the Rolex branded pouch. It’s like an eye glass case with a zipper and has foam inserts to cushion the watch. An even tougher travel case is the shock case. Many other manufacturers make a similar case to shock case (Oakley, watch pod, etc..).
I have 2 of the Tudor pouches. One is service number 50006084.8064 and one is 50006084.64. Is one of them fake? Also I noticed the issue with the metal button scratching the watch, when I put my watch in I put the watch dial facing in so it can never rub against the button.
Check out on Chrono24 for parts/accessaries under pouch you will find a few brown fine leather pouch by Rolex which is said to be given out to VVIP customers. Those selling it on chrono24 is asking insane money for them but they are really good design and high quality as I have a few.
Those plastic Rolex Japanese fetch $40 in UK, the very common felts are just $35 here - Be interesting to see you do boxes 70s Green stripe $400, Seahorse $300, Moon crater £175, Green marble $125 etc etc
First time I’ve ever thought of you as precious Austin. Of course metal is not effected by a bit of taught stretch, metal is effected by metal on metal rubbing.
Agree and metal will not wear by abit of tension either unless there are frictions/movements. Those who wear their watches loose will inadvertably causes the bracelet to wear at the joints due to prolong frictions.
But band stretch is a thing, usually caused by wearing the bracelet too loose and, over time, the weight of the head of the watch combined with movement will stretch/bend the PINS in in the bracelet between the links. This is the weak spot and I completely share and understand and Austin's concern. For the same reason it also might also be worse for a hollow end link watch vs a solid end link.
I would say there's much more of a chance for wear with the bracelet loose and rattling! I think the tension on the bracelet is a non issue! Rolex has a very robust bracelet!
Austin... I don’t wanna offed nobody here cause I’m Rolex and AP owner but your words about dust rubbing uttons are sounds absolutely insane!!!! Keep your watch in original box and what this point in this video 😳😳😳😳😳😳sounds very insane
Austin like so many of watches (especially Rolex) fanatics, love this type of OCD videos or stories. Guess one have to an OCD like us to appreciate this.
RSC in Malaysia too uses the same Tudor like in green but in fine leather with inner all lined with silk-like cloth hence keeping the button metal covered. However, they provide a micro fiber cloth to wrap the watch instead of a cardboard.
Travel purposes? If my Rolex isnt actually on my wrist, its going to be in a nondescript watch carrier in my carry-on. No way in hell am I gonna have it in a fancy little bag with the word "ROLEX" emblazoned across the front, not even while its in the carry-on. Just asking for troubles
Wow that vinyl pouch is so cheap. No matter what the service, the presentation should always be superb, so that, the customer feels like they’re dealing with Rolex. Service after the purchase is key for me.
The Rolex service pouches are useless. I use a single travel case for my piece if I'm travelling and I'm bring two watches. 1 on the wrist and 1 in the case👍
All this video serves to show is that Austin suffers from "watch OCD", for which I really do sympathize. But Jesus, Austin, who cares if a few specks of dust get on your watch through the protective pouch? It's a fucking submariner!!!! Just wash the mother fucker in soapy water. Problem solved. The watch is water-proof, after all. I mean, I'm sorry for your obsession and all, but really!! Get with the program, man!!!! Now you've got me obsessing about your obsession for Christ's sake!!!
