Yes, I play instruments too... • Tim Time! - Last Chanc...
---------------
There's a collider under Geneva
Reaching new energies that we've never achieved before
Finally we can see with this machine
A brand new data peak at 125 GeV
See how gluons and vector bosons fuse
Muons and gamma rays emerge from something new
There's a collider under Geneva
Making one particle that we've never seen before
The complex scalar
Elusive boson
Escaped detection by the LEP and Tevatron
The complex scalar
What is its purpose?
It's got me thinking
Chorus:
We could have had a model (Particle breakthrough, at the LHC)
Without a scalar field (5-sigma result, could it be the Higgs)
But symmetry requires no mass (Particle breakthrough, at the LHC)
So we break it, with the Higgs (5-sigma result, could it be the Higgs)
Baby I have a theory to be told
The standard model used to discover our quantum world
SU(3), U(1), SU(2)'s our gauge
Make a transform and the equations shouldn't change
The particles then must all be massless
Cause mass terms vary under gauge transformation
The one solution is spontaneous
Symmetry breaking
Roll your vacuum to minimum potential
Break your SU(2) down to massless modes
Into mass terms of gauge bosons they go
Fermions sink in like skiers into snow
Lyrics and arrangement by Tim Blais and A Capella Science
Original music by Adele

I'm a grandma, 60 years old, and I love this! I've been listening to acapellascience for quite a while, and I don't understand all of it, so I'm reading to learn. I have thought that if I ever sustain a severe conk on my noggin' and end up in a coma, I'd like to come out of it understanding string theory and quantum physics! Wouldn't that be awesome?!

@MSA 212 Well, I keep going back and forth in my science reading and video watching between physics and climate change. As best as I can remember, when I was in high school we learned that atoms made up everything, that protons and neutrons were part of atoms, and there was nothing smaller. Now we have gluons and quarks and... wow! I have a book in my stack that I'm borrowing from one of my sons that I intend to read soon. It's Get a Grip on Physics, by John Gribben. It's beginner level stuff, and without that good conk to the noggin' I might never get past beginner level stuff!
@dianebarnett4722
@dianebarnett4722 5 лет назад
@MSA 212 Cool! Thanks! It's best to have some sort of plan. I've had a scatter-shot approach, just reading or listening to whatever caught my eye. The same son that I borrowed the book from has a textbook that might cover these subjects. He also still has his high school chemistry book. We homeschooled (sons ages now range from 34-40) and some of us really liked the textbooks. Sounds weird in some circles to say that!
@acapellascience

Thanks for the feedback... it's actually a real challenge to me to figure out what level I'm pushing for, because honestly I just write what first pops into my head so how complicated a song is tends to precisely mirror how well I know a subject. I suspect that your students will also not understand the next video (though I hope they'll still enjoy it) but after that I may have exhausted the subjects I'm an expert in. Maybe then things will be more at a "scientifically-minded enthusiast" level.

Pretty good dude! The lyrical mashup you did was amazing and your voice is pretty good, too! If I may offer some constructive criticism, for future songs you may want to consider pulling it down a key or two, or perhaps drop an octave if you really want to keep the key the same. Your high notes are mostly in pitched, but seems to be struggling a little. That way you can keep the flow without straining your voice on the high notes too much. Great job, though! Very talented!

LOL, the Bohemian Gravity was already there. An excellent video clip! Just a comment: the observed 126 GeV boson is really an excitation of a real, not complex scalar field. Well, it may be derived from a complex (well, when it comes to SU(2), pseudoreal) doublet of scalar fields but the components have different fates. Three real components are eaten by W+, W-, Z0 bosons to become their longitudinal polarizations and only the "radial" component remain purely spinless, producing a particle identical to its antiparticle (a quantum of a real scalar field). But I am sure you know that. Greetings to Alex M.

I just found this after a Facebook posting sharing the String Theory Rhapsody by George Takei. I'll be sharing both videos with the HS band class that I teach. It is in a small school in Oklahoma and I am fortunate to have students who are "music/science nerds" and I couldn't ask for a better group. I already know that a huge number of them will absolutely love your videos. Thank you for doing these.
