@@cocoaorange1 wish it were 100 with 10 years of it having Charlie still drumming for the world's pleasure. I'll forever listen to The Rolling Stones much in tune to Charlie forever now.
@marney evans He was born on 2nd June 1941 but if this interview was after 2nd of June 1966 which it could well have been as it looks Summer, then he would have been 26 .
I’ve delved deeply into Carlie’s interviews since his passing….this one helps me to know him the best….lovely man….rest in peace and God bless you Charlie!!
Me too. My respect for him and sadness on his passing only grow as I watch his interviews, hear others tell remarkable stories about him (especially his generosity and kindness), and watch him perform. Four drums and impeccable timing and technique- and he adopted dogs, supported elderly jazz drummers, and adored his family.
@@CidYoung-REALTOR there's an English steeplejack his name slips me at the moment but he always stopped for a cheese and pickle sandwich and maybe a pint
@@forgive7449 He said he didn't believe in sleeping with groupies because 'you don't know where they've been and what you might pick up', and when the band were touring he just played pool and had a drink in the bar, and never took up the offer of all the available women. Shall we believe him?
I've just this minute heard that Charlie has died aged 80. What a life he's led and his fabulous contribution to Jazz & Rock n' Roll. Keith will be heartbroken for sure. Condolences to his family & friends. Thanks Charlie. Wise decision to join the Stones in Jan 1963.
It was a wise decision for the Stones to hire Charlie. The most down to earth rock musician I can think of. Same kind of man in 2021 as he was in 1966. Condolences to his family.
Charlie shows a reflective and thoughtful nature and not a trace of arrogance, and he has grown into a very stylish and mature man, not at all in the tradition of old rockers who never grow up. Charlies Watts is a class act and a great drummer, someone young people can emulate. You don't have to be trashy to rock like hell.
I met him in Manhattan circa 1975 while buying a nice pair of Italian boots at a place called Chelsea Cobbler. ( Charlie must have selected 8 or 9 pair of slightly less flashy shoes ). We chatted for a minute & yes he seemed so unaffected by it all. So very real and genuine. We won’t see his like again…
R.I.P Charlie Watts... such a decent, thoughtful person whom I believe created the stable and balanced environment that kept the Stones together. Condolences to the family and friends.
Since Charlie passed, I’ve read and listened to a lot concerning his drumming etc., but what you said about him keeping the Stones together makes so much sense and I personally believe that. So many have asked how they managed to stay together all these years? Simply put Mr. Watts.
@@mikewoodson6930 If you ever read any of the books or biographies about them, Ronnie also was often the Peace-Maker when Mick and Keith were feuding, too.
Was Charlie ever young? He seems to have been born thoughtful, humble and a wise mature man. The Budha of rock 'n roll. This sort of maturity doesn't exist today.
One of Rock n' Rolls greatest talents, in one of the greatest bands of all time, The Rolling Stones. Charlie Watts, so humble, so classy, a beautiful, sweet man... He was like the glue that held the Stones together, solid as they come... One hell of a drummer. I bet he never thought in a million years, the Stones would turn out to be as historic as they are. The lovely girl on the horse is Charlie's wife Shirley, they had a daughter Seraphina, and were married for almost 60 years...Love, prayers, and respect to your girls. We wil forever 'Miss You' Charlie... RIP.
Condolences to his family and particularly his wife Shirley . I do hope she has her privacy respected. What a huge loss for The Rolling Stones.. Isn't this video lovely.
Just think, the Stones had released Aftermath, and were working on Between the Buttons when this interview was done. What an incredible period in the Stones history. Fortunately Charlie was innovative and served this music in a way only he could have. RIP Charlie, RIP the Rolling Stones. You might go see the Stones this year, but you won't be seeing the Rolling Stones without Charlie.
Charlie is wise, very down to earth, not a showoff type self appraising "high roller" just a real person. I admire him for his honesty and not being an egomaniac, unlike say John Lennon, or John Love of the beach boys.
yes and Good Lord.. he was very beautiful in his prime!!! maybe more than Mick..I never noticed that.. (his mouth was as beautiful as Mick's! (a little thinner but as large..) apart from this, yes a real wise and intelligent guy.. I have sometimes wondered if he was (intelligent) cause never heard him talking more than one or two sentences..
Listening to this and compare it to any recent interview and it is amazing how little Charlie's personality and attitude changed in 55 years. He seems to have been as steady and grounded in life as he was behind his drum kit. ✌🇨🇦
For a young man of 25 up until his later years, Charlie Watts , had an amazing perspective on everything and his place in life. May you rest in peace ✌️ and power, Charlie. Class and perspective like yours will live on. Thank you for everything, Mr. Charles Robert Watts.
I have always liked his drumming and his persona as a performer. This interview reveals a lot of his thinking and personality. He seems like a very likable and thoughtful man. Would have loved to have met him.

Such a thoughtful and calm man. How he stayed in that group amazes me... apart from money which he could of made on a small scale doing music he really loved to play. Fly high Charlie ...🌹
Impossible not to admire Charlie Watts! In previous interviews I've heard him state " I'm not a Rock Star at least I don't buy into the hype. I see myself as a jazz drummer who happens to be a drummer/musician in a Rock N Roll band". It is impressive he's been married throughout his long career with the Rolling Stones and faithful to his misses. Tom Jones is another story. The best Tom can come up with is " I have been unfaithful throughout most of my career but at the end of the day all roads lead back to Linda" In another interview Charlie was congratulated for his 25 years working with the Stones. Charlie said 5 years working and 20 years of waiting. Humble man who speaks his mind very effective!
Tom Jones is a complete douche if he justifies fucking around on his wife by always returning to her after being on the road or whatever. That doesn't make it ok. My first wife cheated on me once then ended the affair but I could never trust her or fuck her again no matter how much she apologized...I left her..
Wow! Totally cool guy. Honest, down to earth, just like his playing. Perfect drummer for the best band ever. 1966, he had no clue he would be a multi-millionaire not long after. Such a friendly guy.
Lol. Listened again. He's hilarious! On first listen, I kind of glossed over what he said about Mother's Little Helper. - It's not such a big deal in England because people don't take as many pills here as they do in America. - HAHAHAHAH! Boy howdy, did he ever nail that one! And this was 52 years ago! OMG! Great song! I remember it playing on the radio so often back then. Perfect little sing-along tune it was, especially the beginning. He talks about Mick's lyrics, and couldn't have known then that Mick would develop into one of the best lyricists in rock history, if not THE best!
@Nelson Robert Willis Yeah, well, fair enough, but those guys themselves have said Mick does the words and Keith comes up with the riffs, most of the time.
RIP, Charlie, class act, I always loved the Beatles but when these guys came along , so rebellious and pure, Rolling Stones were always my favorite British band by far.
Yes the quality makes it seem current. But it was a long time ago. Music since then has changed for the worst and you and I are older. Nice to go back in time
R.I.P. CHARLIE. You'll be much missed. So nice to hear this old interview, he seemed a humble guy- very clever, musician, artist, writer, etc. What he says here makes so much sense- he's got "the racket" down pat doesn't he?! My heart goes out to Shirley, Serafina and Charlotte, and other friends and family- who'd have thought- to all those who said "they won't last". Appreciate- a gentle, genuine, clever bloke...thanks for a lifetime of great music- I listen to your jazz CDs now...Namaste. A fan from Canada who lucked out and saw you in concert several times.
A deep and reflective interview which opened up Charlie Watts Soul to some extent. He was essentially a Home Bird and a family man who was loyal and faithful. Unique in the Rock and Roll scene. . A short clip of his wife on her horse which added a touching moment too.
such a great interview. the interviewer is asking such deep personal questions and charlie is just having a chat. answering each of them as honestly as possible.
Yes, even the questions he doesn't enjoy answering, he gives straight answers to. As with the only other interview I've seen him do, from much more recent times.
May your beautiful Soul Rest In Peace, you left this world a better place. If you only knew how much you were truly loved. The balance of the solar system & the heavens above have changed since you left. I love you my beautiful friend. Rock with the Angels🌜☄️🌏🪐✨🌞💥🙏🏻🥁✌🏻👼🏻
Charlie: great drummer, musician and good guy. I wish I could meet him and just listen. I'm a rhythm guitar player and play with the drums and bass and it works out well. Charlie is always in my mind when I'm playing. Thanks Charlie!
I like that they mentioned “Paint it Black” because for me, just after Keith’s intro on Acoustic Guitar, it’s the sound of the POUNDING he gives those drums that sets off the rest of the song. Listen to it sometime, and you’ll see that it’s Charlie’s drumming that made that song such a hit.
Thanks so much for sharing this, a really great interview with my favorite Stone. 'Got to love Charlie's timeless, down-to-earth attitude. I think his awareness of his circumstances in comparison to that of the world's at large is laudable given that so many of the most fortunate try so desperately to either downplay their success, or insult our intelligence by claiming their lives somehow remain as before despite fame (How could anyone's life NOT change given those circumstances!). As to his further assessment regarding race and music of the time, as a black woman, I have to agree that the racial and physical appeal of the British bands(sexy, young, white men playing music borne of the life's experience of old, black men in this country) undoubtedly made it more palatable to a white audience at the time (as did The Motown Sound, I'm sure, ironically enough). A lovely, cerebral man, five decades after this in-depth interview, Charlie reminds me of fine wine, getting only better with time.
Charliebird. I love this interview, and your remarks! The bit were Charlie says "people don't imagine Frank Sinatra having a headache" made me laugh out loud!!
I'd differ with your assessment of " old black men" although the crap they lived through before they were 25 could have made them worldly beyond their age. ( Robert Johnson, Muddy, Bo Diddley, ) . But your insightful observation defines rock and roll.
Rest in Peace Charlie Watts. Loved hearing you play #LosAngeles #StaplesCenter, love your beat & timing. My sincerest Condolences to the Rolling Stones and your family, friends and fans.
Rest In Peace Charlie ~ you’ve been a great inspiration to so many of us ~ not only for your unique drumming style; but for the man that you were . Please guide us all from drum and music 🥁 heaven . 🎶🇦🇺
RIP Mr Watts. We should all listen to his take on people and life, the world would be a much better place. England has lost an amazing drummer, with Sir Ringo the backbone to post war popular music.
I'll be honest. I never followed the stones but I have watched many videos recently on Charlie's passing. He had such a thoughtful calm presence about him. A gentle soul indeed on top of being a superb musician.
Awesome interview from 1966....things were so different fifty-one years earlier - down to earth honesty from a man who probably thought at the time he 'might' get a year or two more of being a huge pop-star ... Gosh, look what happened... Bless you, CW - you are a true inspiration :)
Charlie watts !! A great human being !! too quiet to be a rock star !! I never heard a scandal from him !! The only two rock stars who are very quiet !! They are Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones and John Deacon the bassist from Queen !!
13:16 "... very nice because they were sort about smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day could you'll catch cancer and you see in five years time when they've researched on cancer and let's hope they found the cure ..." RIP Charlie, my sweet angel.
Keith will likely miss Charlie's jig before gigs. He was always so once removed from the band. I always wondered what he was thinking. The Angie video of Charlie is the best FAR AWAY look I have ever seen.
If only every 25 year-old were as honest, thoughtful, humble and respectful, the world would be such a lovely place. A true English gentleman and stellar musician.
This kind of pisses me off... Bonham or Moon NEVER sat down in front of their homes with their wife, their horses, their dogs - to give such deep, personal and inviting talks. Townsend was even always rather glib. Jimmy Page - glib. Bless Charlie Watts' heart. Rest In Peace and soar through the heavens with your beloved Slingerlands.
This guy was so hot I can’t stop thinking or watching anything about him or his interviews he really is my favorite rolling stone I love and miss you Charlie Watts RIP
Seth Belfort Your absolutely right my friend. We all are entitled to ours. And sometimes we even agree with somebody else’s!😉 Personally, Charlie Watts, is in my personal Top Drummers of All-Time. 1-Neil Peart, 2-Gene Krupa, 3-John Bonham, 4-Charlie Watts, 5-Keith Moon, 6-Elvin Jones, 7-Danny Carey, 8-Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernandez, 9-Ginger Baker, 10-Tito Puentes-are probably my list of 10 personal favorite drummers. With the Top 5 NON-DEBATABLE, in their respective order. If you would care to share yours, I would love to read them. ✌🏼
The drummer always seems to be the heart of every great band- no bullshit, keeps it real, in most cases keeps everyone grounded. RIP Charlie Watts, you really laid down some history.
