Very, very physical work for a young drummer. Can you imagine playing at such a high level of activity, several nights weekly, in one’s seventies? You will be missed, Charlie Watts. Thank you.
True story ! Hotel in Amsterdam. Charlie, dressed for the occasion in his best suit, lays Mick out on top of a tray of cold cuts which proceeds to slide towards an open window straight for the canal ! Keith had to grab hold of his jacket sleeve to save him ! I just love the imagery !
Brian was the first stone and anchor for the band and overall the bands drive, organization, and they built on that for years after. It's all been downhill since his death tbh
To me, in his own quiet way over 50 years, and despite himself, Charlie has become the coolest Stone of all. Seen it all, says nothing, and holds them together like a lion-tamer.
@@arkybeagle6159 Couldn't agree more. That's when they were a true band. I think the Stones have been a corporation/brand since the early/mid 80's. Let's be honest, they ceased as a creative force after Tattoo You (and that's being a little generous). When Bill Wyman left he'd been with them for 28 years. That was 31 years ago! No band has never remained so enormous by doing so little, merit-wise musically, over such a long period. The best Rolling Stones tribute act on the planet is now The Rolling Stones.
@@thebadloser yeah I agree. “Some Girls”, while a masterpiece was their last. “Tattoo You” has a couple of good songs on it. But you’re right. They’re spent creatively and are nothing more than a tribute band to and of themselves.
@@jmad627 Which would be fair enough as they're now approaching their 80's but they seemed to give up /start coasting creatively in their early 40's! Don't know if you're a reader, but the book 'Under Their Thumbs' by Bill German is a great account of that 80's-early 90's period - a period pretty much undocumented previously. It's a fascinating but not particularly pretty read if you're a fan.
he was friends with Ginger Baker but Ginger Baker hated the Stones music but he like Charlie's playing because it had swing and now they are both gone.
Charlie Watts's work ethic is legendary. He is workmanly in practice and on stage. In 1963, he was the homily Stone. The guy got better looking as he got older, by a lot. He and his wife Shirley have quitely stayed together for over 50 years. This guy is an example, to any kid who wants to be a drummer.
@@missymarie2698 Yeah, now I feel like Joe Biden a week ago on the Afghan army. That didn't age well, but I had always had a lot of respect for Charlie. If you're at all religious, join me in a prayor for his wife Shirley and his family. Thanks, and admit it even passed away, he looks healthier than Keith and Ron Wood.
@@jgranger3532 Oh don’t be so hard on yourself- NOTHING can compare to Joe’s utter dementia’ed cluelessness. 🤪 I just prayed for Charlie’s family and the rest of his friends. Seems like that’s all I do these days- this world has gotten so evil. I had no idea they referred to him as homely. Tho he may not have had model looks back then, my gosh- none of them seemed to be very attractive?! Despite his age, Charlie sure got better looking ultimately and was quite handsome...and he seemed to be in great shape too (prior to this illness). I sure enjoyed watching his little dancing rituals that he did with Keith, preshow time. Too funny. He seemed like such a neat, down to Earth guy- not at all like a Rock Star. I also think he planned on touring still for quite a few more years yet- with no real end in sight. It’s amazing that Keith Richards is still alive even!! Like...how?! 🙏✝️❤️✌️
@@missymarie2698 Trumpies who love the Stones, maybe you never listened to their music close enough or you wouldn't be a Trumpie. And WTF do you need to drag your political opinions into a discussion of a rock drummer?
I always smile, imagining that Aretha wrote Rock Steady, in part, as a wink and a nod to Watts, Benny Benjamin, Pistol Allen, Uriel Jones of Motown and Bernard Purdie, backbeat on the original track. Charlie is in elite company.
Nobody considered him the best, and his name isn’t even well known amongst the casual fan, but Charlie Watts had his style and fit The Rolling Stones perfectly. He was a jazz drummer who did his job well in the Stones. The consummate gentleman.
Yeah, I love the early blues sounds of the Rolling Stones and Charlie put up with the evolution into commercial music. Thank goodness he had his own jazz band to keep him sane.
I'm so gutted. I like to think of the Stones' music as the soundtrack to all that happens in my life and this is so painful. Thanks for everything Charlie and RIP.
Mr Watts passed away today. He was always my favorite band member. Loved his witty humor along with his great drum work. I’ve always said he did so much with so little. You will be deeply missed my friend ❤️🥰
Rest In Peace. Listened to The Rolling Stones since I was 11 years old on a hi fi mono record player. They were always there. Memory Eternal Charlie Watts.
Johnnybeagles Felt the loss of Charlie Watts much more than the passing of other rockers. Talented, gracious, good humored, HUMBLE, and fantastic dresser. The last coolest rocker.
Charlie was a GREAT drummer, RIP, hearts go out to his family, he was truly the (heart)beat of the ROLLING STONES, i've played the drums for over 50 yrs, he is one of the few drummer who held the sticks CORRECTLY ! (most don't know he was an excellent jazz drummer also ) Love your style RIP!
I waited in the rain in the winter to get tickets to the stones concert in Tampa FL and another time in Orlando FL great times then thanks Charlie watts love and peace for ever
Whenever I played the Stones, my dog would go to sleep. That's when I knew Charlie Watts was truly hypnotic. So sad, my hearts out to his friends and family.
Cool they used this song.... great tune with a classic Watts beat holding it together. Those great little guitar riffs are all built on his rhythms.... my favorite song off my favorite album of my eleven year old self.... '71
Devastating news ths morning, as the radio guy said" it's a sad day as we remember Charlie Watts the Drummer of the Rolling Stones who has passed away overnight aged 80 " Charlie was a very talented Drummer, in a class of his own. One of the best and greatest Drummers. He was a very clever Graphic Artist as well. Charlie was a man of dignity and integrity. Faithful to his wife of 57 years, he never strayed. Apart from all of thiis, the best action he ever took was to punch Jagger in the face. " I'm not your Drummer boy, I'm The Rolling Stone's Drummer " Good onya Charlie!!
Soooo miss you Charlie, you are by far thee best drummer that was brought to Earth..thank you for sharing your gift with the greatest band that will ever be…you are sorely missed RIP my friend ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I met Charlie Watts in 1972? approx in Montreal, Canada and related to him how I had, on a couple of occasions back in probably 1966/7 gone to see them play at 'Eel Pie Island' which is an island in the river Thames with a very run down 1920's pub on it when they were just becoming 'London' well known. He was very pleasant and well mannerd and said, "Yeah, don't remind me."
The stones musical style didn’t need a heavy drum presentation. Kieth called Bohnam “ heavy handed” hence the Led in Zeppelin he said. Charlie played the same kit he had back in the 70s. Perfect drummer for a guitar and vocal based band
Got into the Stones in the 70s. Ten yrs of listening to them later I realized he’s the most important player in the band. And I still believe it. They better call it quits so help me god….
And they are still trying to learn how to play drums like Charlie. When he hits the snare on beats 2 and four and never hits the symbols at the same time With his right stick, is an incredibly cool technique and effect.
Actually, by now it's probably a limited liability corporation with ownership spread throughout an endless maze of legal entities, and offices in multiple countries.
No extensive kit, minimalist drummer with a stoic face BUT he was the beat of the Greatest Rock n Roll Band on earth. Charlie had an amazing life. Saw it all and did it many times over. R.I.P. now.
A very unique individual and one of the greatest drummer's of all time. It was interesting during an interview someone said to Charlie " So everyone in the band follows you " Charlie said no, we all follow Keith" . Pretty humble also ,but I'm sure he's saved Keith many times . 😜❗
When the Stones spent some time at the Playboy mansion Charlie just stayed in the game room shooting pool instead of doing you know what lol, so as to stay faithful to his wife
Ahh Charlie, great drummer and self-effacing man of few words. Not a fan of the wild-ass nihilism of some of his compatriots, he's more than happy to sit back and enjoy his 120 million net worth at home when his band isn't touring. All of the Stones are interesting in their interviews.
He’s a proper English gentleman and he plays better than “trained” drummers. Natural musicians are better anyway because they play by feel and the groove is awesome!
