Looking good Harry. Actually this reminded me of an incident with my dad many years ago. He borrowed a friend's Silver Shadow in a rather conspicuous shade of yellow. Well, he got pulled by the police and being an Irishman in a Rolls in the 70s was not a good mix. I believe they suspected him of being some kind of IRA bigwig and put him in a cell overnight until his identity could be confirmed. His mate's never let him live it down and presented him with a corgi diecast mounted on a plinth which I still have to this day. 🙂

That really is, must be, an iconic car. What coach builder was it from? As you call it "Rolls" and leave "Royce" out, I would turn this around. Rolls died in 1910 in a plane crash. Also, your name could place you in the USA where Phantoms got made too - was it a British or US one? Anyhow, congratulations for keeping the Phantom of the car world alive.

I'm in the UK and it is a Derby made car with limousine coachwork by Windovers of London. Most owners of older models in the UK refer to them as ' the Rolls ' , NEVER a ' Roller ' !.Occasionally called ' Royces ' but it is just the way long-term owners refer to them with affection , or at least over here !.@@jpdj2715

The camshaft gears of the Phantom were first machined, then hardened, then stoned by hand to make sure they mated perfectly. This hand work took over 80 hours for each set of gears.

I spent a lot of my childhood in a met-brown one, my dad is a dyslexic builder, cant read but can make money… this car was a real love of his, a medal to him really. Lovely cars. Sadly it was tainted as it got keyed twice within 6 months in different car parks, my dad was terribly upset that someone would be jealous enough of his hard work and effort to want to damage his little achievement. even today when i see a man in a top end expensive car im never jealous and always think “i bet he worked damn hard for that”

The Shadow's chief designer (can't remember his name) was concerned about stability - he had a thing called the 'Sneeze Test' - ie if you sneeze and twitched the wheel, he wanted the car to still track straight - hence the dead feeling at the centre of the steering to pass the 'sneeze test'

I like how you repaired the Rolls, but didn't try to "restore" it. Fixing what was in bad shape or unsafe, an improvement that doesn't distract from the car's nature, and keeping the things that make it the Arctic Rolls. Taking us for a drive to London, and showing off the car's still-impressive ride. And I always thought it was wider than it is; seeing it in a parking bay shows you how small it really is. Thank you for taking us with you, and hope you had a great time in the city

Harry, when you talk about the suspension and ride quality I have to mention something which is relevant from my teenage years. My Father worked for AP Lockheed in Liverpool which specialised in hydraulics. The company were working with Rolls Royce to develop suspension for the Shadow replacement, the Silver Spirit. The test car was a maroon Shadow, the boot being full of tanks and pumps etc for the new suspension- test mule spec. The ride was unbelievable but the car once parked would sit down which Rolls were not keen on. But the funny thing I remember was a solid oak boot stay to prop the boot lid up. It had been machined and sanded before being stained and varnished. It was almost as good as the interior wood! One last thing, the test car was without the radiator grill and Spirit of Ecstasy….. why? Because it was a mule was the official response! 😂 I enjoy your channel very much 🥂

Always loved these editions on the Rolls , ever since seeing The Thomas Crown Affair with super -cool Steve McQueen , always wanted one. @davidvivian596
@davidvivian596 2 года назад
I think Harry said that the purchase price was actually £4,100 (on e-bay). I totally agree with you that the car suits the old London streets. Although in the 1970s I always thought a RR was an enormous car, it goes to show how big 'average' cars today have become. I passed a brand new Audi A6 estate earlier today and God, they're wide. By comparison, the proportions on the RR are exquisite.

@@davidvivian596 hi it was £7000 in 1968 , from new, nearly twice the price of my fathers house in the same year. @@davidvivian596 the A6 is positively svelte compared to 1970s American cars, though... even the Shad is only 83mm narrower, and most of that difference is in the door mirrors. The actual bodies are about the same. A mid 70s GM C-body is 143mm wider than the current A6. Not even the A8 breaks the 2m width barrier. The only car that comes near the 70s Yank tanks is the Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII, and even that is slightly narrower.

So happy you are championing narrow cars. Manufacturers should be forced to reduce car width to keep traffic flowing and stop selfish drivers parking on pavements. If you reduce width you then force a reduction in height (to manage centre of gravity / handling issues) which leads to reduced kerb weights, better economy, reduced tyre wear etc. Narrow cars - it's the future! 😇

Reminds me of my parents shadow bought back in 1980. It was a 1967 (TYK 22F) with air conditioning and a metal sliding sunroof (apparently a very rare and expensive option when new). It had picnic tables on the back of the front seats and a 4 speed auto (later changed to a 3 speed with the larger 6.75 engine) from builds after1970ish. I can confirm (because I had to do it) if you lock the boot lid, then ace the car key in the boot gutter rails d slam the boot closed, you have just locked yourself out of your car 😂 However,if you remove the spare wheel, you will find a hole in the boot floor (so your mechanic can check your spare tyre pressure without lowering the spare, assuming you lined up the valve with the hole) and it's big enough for a teenagers arm . So Laying on my back, with a socket set and spanners,I found (after 3 hours) you can undo the boot catch from inside the boot, completely blindly and open the boot to retrieve the key 👍

A friend of mine has a 68 Silver Shadow, I have borrowed it a number of times, and it truly is a spectacular car to drive. No vibration at all from the engine, and you can’t hear it idle when you’re inside. The driving experience can best be described as «wafting» rather than driving, and in 1968-70 it must have been stupendously superior to all other cars of that time, except maybe the Citroën DS, which another friend of mine has, incidentally. I love driving the Shadow! It does equal most modern cars, in my opinion.

It felt like being taken round by a best mate and chatting about his car. I'm also a devotee of your farm videos so I guess there's no hope for me! Your work is so good and so enjoyable and has been a definite sanity saver this year.

This was beautiful and thank you for sharing the reason why it's white... My first was an 82 Spirit (you can all groan is you want, I LOVED it) that was in Georgian Silver with Gray hides piped Black, for a very similar reason... I also lovingly restored her, maybe a misguided adventure I took at the time however it was something I felt I "needed" to do. Well, 1 1/2 years and $50,000 USD latter, she was complete & better than new, and I was off my rocker and on to my next Rolls! It's an addiction.

I tell my mates that my Bentley is like an ex of mine. I loved her to bits and thought she was beautiful, but she cost me plenty and did my head in!

Majestic car in everyway, a beautiful sight and awesome to see the car cruising through London. Hope to see more of the Artic Rolls Royce in 2022. A great fun video, thank you.

The final result is great indeed. On video, the paint match seems absolutely perfect. I'm not that surprised about the tight turning circle: after all, I guess RR engineers fully expected the Shadow to be driven in Central London :) Whenever I visited London, I loved spotting older RRs being driven around. They simply looked "right" for that environment.

Your trip brings back memories of when I used to drive into Newman Street in W1 on a daily basis and around Hyde Park. I had the privilege of an underground car park so it was bliss as I also shared the driving with my next door neighbour. He had a company car and I had a parking space!! So we shared🤗

Another great video. Really pleased seeing the outcome of the Rolls Royce restored by still existent , great British craftsmanship. Ps Seeing this video has brought me to the realisation that shaped Rolls is my favourite.

My dad’s ambition was to have a RR before his 40th, so a few weeks before his birthday he sold his motorbike and my mum’s Ford Escort and bought a Shadow mk1. It was about 12 years old and cost about the same then as a new Vauxhall Astra...but I got loads of stick at school about being posh when I was spotted in it 😀

Great, intelligent restoration to enjoy a fine RR classic. Love the linkages to Dyson's farm & George Best's football days at Manchester United. Great London drive & car.

Amen to the statement “the engineers will get us out of this rather than politicians”. I am a consulting engineer and apart from a few defence things in the last two decades most of what I have been working on has been net zero related. We will get there but we really need to be focussed and working down a list of subjects driven by a true impact curve. We need to mobilise our efforts on the things that really need addressing not virtue signalling nonsense or tokenism. Coal fired energy, Heavy oil ships, haulage and air travel all need sorting before going vegan or avoiding leather or destroying perfectly good petrol cars for new electric ones.

There is a story in this video, some sense of purpose, that makes it as special as the car. It reminds me of your Lotus Esprit video. These are the gems.

It never gets old seeing just how big today's cars are compared to older one. Just sitting in the car park that Rolls looks so small compared to the BMW next to it. Great job fixing up the car, looks amazing.

I've always thought a Rolls was a bit too ostentatious, but having worked on some of Rolls - Royce's finest products, I have come to appreciate the outstanding engineering that makes them so special. Splendid car, ably demonstrated.

Love it. I’ve a ‘70 Bentley waiting to see if I can save it. Lovely to see yours in action. Also I wondered what those marker lights were - I thought they were an aftermarket addition - didn’t realise they were standard. Fab

@@alasdairlowe5359 Yes, dreaded wet days for me at one time meant a lift to school and arrival in the Thames van while my dad had a housebuilding phase. Sadly his P4 Rover 100 was never deployed for this role.

Extra cool detail on these amazing cars: you pointed out the beauty of the woodwork on the doors. But look closely and you’ll find that the opposite side is the exact mirror of that very same piece of wood. Only Rolls Royce would think of that! Great video Harry, thanks as always!
