Discover how cosmetics from the Roman Empire literally changed the face of Britain in the 3rd century in our latest History Inspired Makeup Tutorial.
Fashion Historian Amber Butchart and Makeup Artist Rebecca Butterworth are at Wroxeter Roman City, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. This time we’re showing you a step-by-step makeup tutorial inspired by real cosmetic artefacts found at Wroxeter.
From bathing to bright blue eye shadow, find out how important appearance was to Roman Britons and see the artefacts that shaped our tutorial. Watch as we use a replica grinder to apply eyeliner to our model Sarah Mhlanga and learn how to recreate the look at home. Our English Heritage Collections Curator Cameron Moffett is on hand to discuss the artefacts, while Properties Historian Dr Andrew Roberts tells us about life at Wroxeter.

I agree and disagree. I definitely think everyone would notice the odd over sized wool blanket shes hiding under, and the hair & pearls make sense together (looks regal/high class) but not with that outfit. The dress would look too shapeless on its own. So maybe just pairing parts of this outfit separately would still make sense today.

munty exchange Oh well...I wear ponchos and large shawls instead of jackets quite often....doesn’t look much different. Of course, I don’t carry them draped over my arm like that...I think they just did that, so people would be able to see the dress. If she had slung the end over her shoulder, it would have looked quite contemporary. But yeah...everything together might stand out a tad bit...😄 I live in Berlin though - that might color my view of what’s acceptable in terms of fashion!

However your videos are amazing and is good to see history on the move instead of having one explaining it to us. Someone can also see how many things Romans did at that time that we tend to do today. Even the make up looks so...current! Romans had zebra crossing (for different reasons of course), blocks of flats (mansions) for the poor and even "takeaway" food. Romans need to be explored and appreciated more! Curled needles are better, you can find them at beauty supply stores. Black women used them to sew in weaves 😑
