I just returned from Rome. Only the touristic areas are crowded. You can easily find some respite in Monti, the Jewish quarter, the back streets around piazza del Popolo and the beautiful Trastevere. The restaurants in the Jewish quarter and Trastevere are fantastic!
I like that you add in here the history behind some of the most ruthless Emperors in Rome's history! I would love to see the arch of Titus, where he ransacked and burnt down the temple in Jerusalem in 70A.D. This correlates to the Holy Writings, destruction mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 24, and Luke 21. It would be destroyed and everything in it take and burnt to the ground, no stone standing and knocked down.
the only thing i remember is overcrowded streets, unexisting buses and no services at all, few taxis, unhuman heat and a lot of trash on the streets. Very dirty city. i would never be a tourist in this place, better in Tuscany or somewhere else abroad.

I was in Rome last week, yes the tourist spots look like this and the Trevi fountain was so packed I could barely see the fountain however those tourist areas only make up a fraction of Rome and it is a lot more quiet in other parts of Rome

Pantheon entrance 5 EUR, Area sacra di argentina (recently modernised for visit purposes) 6 EUR, cats cannot roam freely between temples, they are confined only do shelter area. Soon we will pay for entrance to churches, as in Venice par example.
