Rewatching in 2021! Still one of the best play throughs I’ve ever seen Jon play.

Having an "observer" unit tag along with your allies is such an inspired idea. I've cribbed this idea for my own Brutii playthrough, and it's the best. There's nothing better than watching a battle where you're rooting for both sides to be as tactically idiotic as possible, and they deliver every time.

Once i played as the Julii, and boy, with Quintus Julius i destroyed about 3 gauls armies and captured the entire south of france, then Spain declared war on me and i sent him to the Iberian Peninsula where he captured a town and while i build a relief army and marched it he protected the town without being able to receive reinforcements or training new units or retraining because of the constant horde of spaniards that were attacking the city, yet he held it even againts the enormous odds that sometimes appeared (i really had to pull some creative ways to defeat the spaniards in most of the battles), when the relief army was 1 turn away, he fought a last battle to protect the town and when the new turn began...he was dead, he survived just long enough that the relief army came and destroyed the rest of the spaniards, just after that i found out that i had destroyed all the armies of Spain. (Sorry for any grammar mistakes)

im playing as the germans in this game and as i progressed down towards italy the brutii were wiped out im only like 50 odd turns in lol

I like how it's not enough for Jon to let the game screw the Scipii over, he has to MAKE the game screw the Scipii over even more than usual.

I told you to move Tiberius' retinue to a new person two episodes ago. Granted I don't know the time between when you record and upload an episode, but still shame on you Jon.

The first time I played this game, I treated it like a command and conquer game. Just spammed units and threw them all into battle like a giant moshpit. Thanks to your detailed gameplay I had no idea how complex this game truly is. Going to have a go at it again.

On the Battle of Syracuse (Lore): The Scipii invasion was nominally led by the beloved Aulus Scipio. However, due to political intrigues, he was demoted to command a cavalry detachment, handing the army over to the incompetent legate Decius. A political appointee with zero military experience under his belt, his decisions in planning the assault were so horrible, historians are appalled to this day. The only solace for Decius was that he died in the action, avoiding the ramifications of his actions. The hero of the Romans in this battle, however was Aulus Scipio, who, braving archery fire, attempted a desperate flanking maneuver, which, if the rest of Decius' force had not routed by that point, would have resulted in the destruction of Dionysus' garrison, and maybe allowed the Romans to reform on the city square to meet Cleon's reinforcements. Sadly, this was not to be, and Aulus was cut down with his men, who fought to the last. Historians praised the timely arrival of Cleon's army, though they chastise the 2 Spartan born commanders for throwing away their lives recklessly. However, there is more significance to this battle than at first glance: it appears there was a Brutii contigent whose commander was apparently part of a Greek conspiracy to not contribute his forces to assist his Scipii allies. Once it was made clear to the public his immoral act, he was stripped of command and his name tarnished. This would lead to his son joining a mercenary unit, a post where he would gain renown, and eventually he;d be promoted to a Generalship, then became leader of the Brutii, and finally became Rome's first and greatest Emporer. The father was Decius Vatinius. The son, Julianus Vatinius Magnus.

well I mean, I believe Romans still get Eagle Cohorts or something as a support unit that gives a constant morale boost to nearby units.

At 24:31 you completely messed up how many towns the jullii and the scipio had. The jullii had 4 not 3 and the scipio had one other city caralis

The AI is so bad, the Achilles heel of RTW.

Not only did I have a game once where the skipio didn't expand. I had a game where they lost before turn 50. they failed to take Sicily lost their City on Sicily. then there a city in Italy rebelled and they were gone.

I just tried writing a big long and detailed comment (twice) about this game and its small details and how its one of the best of all time and something about evil genius getting a remaster and the just cause franchise being some of the video-gamiest video games (well, you blow stuff up and fight against evil with guns and explosions and there's goat sim-grade physics) and then i continued onto adblock i think and then went to the later total war games being bad compared to this one. I accidentally hit the cancel button... dang mousepad! TIME TO REWRITE ALL OF THIS AND PRESS THE COMMENT BUTTON INSTEAD.

I think I've learned quite a neat trick from you. right now I'm playing as the seleucid empire and trying to push the romans from north africa and greece right now the romans are sending large armies to attack the last numidian settlement in libya but they will not send an army larger than what the numidians have, so i'm thinking that if I simply watch the battle like you do that the romans will always fail to take it, and if the numidian force starts to thin a bit I can simply give them a bit of money to keep them running while I push west to take tripoli

After many campaigns I never thought the Scipii would ever be much if a threat, especially after taking several cities through revolution, I turned a blind eye to them until I met them in the middle at Jerusalem after they had conquered most of the middle east and africa. The Julii are currently, of the remaining factions, one of the worst, with Pontus, Spain, and Iceni being the other "powerhouses"

What's your computer setup? I can only manage 37 fps with mine... I'm running a gtx 660m, a 3rd gen i7 intel processor, and 8gbs of ram.

This is great but in playing rome remastered and there are definitely differences. The AI seems much better as the Roman factions have no problem expanding quickly.

Ok here’s a story of me playing Rome total war I was playing the game and one of my city’s got the plague I panicked for a few minuets and I was 6 years old at the time so I want the smartest that’s when I remembered seeing my friend send a spike that was infected into enmity city’s so I made a spy and got him infected it would’ve gone well if I wasn’t so stupid then I sent my spy to my capital city then to the rest of the city’s then I was like now I just wait for them to die then 30 turns later I lose and I already lost 90% of my territory cuz my army was heavily weakened by the plague I just lost cuz there was nobody left

After seeing the first few episodes I decided to have a go on the iOS version of the game... let's just say the Greeks found a new home in Naples. Have anyone else tried the iOS version, is it just me that absolutely suck with the battle controls?

I find it lazy how they grouped nations into Greek City States. also shouldn't Syracuse be an independent nation? Historically they would be allied with Rome but it might be later on.

Why are all the units/buildings MATN is making in his cities red? If I remember correctly, they should be green unless you are trying to make them but don't have the money.

I have to agree with AI stupidity. I have a garrison force that should NO way win yet it does because of this stupidiy . hell I have seen a AI not use seige engines and just sit there and take arrows tothe face....and knee.

Ahhh sod-it, my Orc TW:WH campaign can wait..... FOR ROME !!!

If you play with DarthMod, the AI isn't as brain-damaged as this, and the game as a whole is better as well
