Ronald Rae's last day of carving the Baby Elephant after seven months of hard graft. See the finished work. This is Ronald Rae's eighth elephant sculpture.
I'm carving a large bird wing , 4x2 , from red oak and have had all sorts of negative thoughts .After watching your determination I feel like a child crying about a splinter. Thanks for the inspiration.
Congratulations to you, sir! I am probably half your age and would have given up of physical exhaustion after the first few weeks. I'm bookmarking this for reference when I've about to quit on a long-term project. Thank you.
Thank you Eric. Having carved granite by hand for over 50 years now I am used to the pain of it -although I only feel the pain when I stop at the end of the day. When I am carving I am driven by what I am trying to achieve that day. I suppose it is a mystery doing. I don't question it too much. Good luck to you. Find your path and go for it!
Watching the progress of this Elephant was moving, almost spiritual. So much sweat put into that priceless piece of art, im in awe. Not of the sculpture itself, but of the whole journey. It was so great seeing the kids excitement of the completed sculpture, icing on the cake.
Great is our God and greatly to be praised! Thank you very much for showing your videos and for not be ashamed to give God the glory for helping you, it is a testament and encouragement to all believers.
Good night rae, congratulatios for the great job. When I first saw the stone I didn't see the baby elefant, but your talented Hands brought it to our eyes. Once more, congratulations.
Thank you Matthew.Your email helps me. I sometimes do feel like a boxer - the granite makes me suffer - it is so hard! But it is what I have to do! Ronald Rae
Absolutely fantastic I really enjoyed your videos and found your relationship to the material very interesting and moving. As an art student I found it very informative.
Its very informative to me how hard you work to chisel at the granite. Makes me wonder even more about what kind of tools the ancient egyptians must have had to make thier granite and diorite statues and blocks. Great work
inspiring attitude! love the baby elephant. really cool to see how a rock can be transformed with some hard labour. peace to your dad. strength obviously runs in the family lol
I came accross this because because I've been trying carving granite and was curious about techniques for hand carving granite (no power tools for me ever), as granite is the only stone available in my area for a good price, not the 1-5$ a lb that "Carving stones" go for. I have to say this 65 y/o puts me to shame... haha. I couldn't do it... it was so hard and so slow going... But after watching all 4 parts of him carving this stone, I'm astounded and impressed he makes me want to try again.
Love it! Great work! Has inspired me to make a granite carving for my girlfriend. I'm studying in Aberdeen at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to find some somewhere...
An amazing example a courage and steadyness and a beautifull piece of art...The difference between you and Michael Angelo :the italian had helpers to do the roughing...
wow- your dedication is incredible...kind of humbling actually too...(speaking as a creative person - i've learnt a lot from seeing this i think!) - I came to find this video as I was wondering how they carved the huge granite boxes in the Serapeum...any ideas?:)
That is kind of you to ask but Ronald Rae can only carve what is in the stones he finds in the quarries. He does have some biblical sculptures that might suit. I will email you to see if you have got your angel or not.
