The 1976 GOP primary runner-up delivered a rousing speech at the Republican convention, calling for a party that painted in "bold, unmistakable colors, with no pastel shades."
No, he really does not. When I did the math, it quickly occurred to me that he looked--and seemed--old even in 1976, let alone 1980. Times have changed, even since 1980, and people live longer and healthier lives. If you told me that video was of a 75 y/o in the 2010s, I would agree he looks sprite. Biden, Trump, and Hillary look younger in their 70s then Reagan did.
@@adamwsaxe But Reagan looked good, I mean look at his hair, his face, his facial features. He was a very handsome man with a friendly smile yet at the same time he looked like a serious and strangely manly dude.
@@adamwsaxe Trump is farily low-energy now, and HRC is clearly worn out. But Joe Biden during 2008-2012 is really fresh. I remember 2012 debate, he was not slow when taunting Paul Ryan. Reagan is sturdy here, come on. Back then food has better standards, less fat.
It was a very close primary season and came down to a few undecided votes at the convention. Reagan made a bold move and nominated his VP choice before the vote. This was unheard of and unfortunately Reagan chose a very liberal Senator from PA named Richard Schweiker. This moved the undecided conservatives to Ford. He might have pulled it out if he has picked a more conservative mate, that said he was boxed in and made a calculated move, just the wrong one.
The Reagan era would have started in 76 if the GOP would have had the balls to remove Mumbles Ford from the ticket. The master speaker Reagan would have crushed Carter.Reagan was at his peak here not in 80..
JERRY BOUCHER I'm not so sure. Reagan himself admitted that the country warmed more to his message between 1976 and 1980. Also, in 1980 he had a four year record of Jimmy Carter to run against, a luxury that he would not have had in '76.
Ronald Reagan and his conservative forces had taken over the GOP forever since 1980. Before 1980 the GOP was an ideologically diverse Party which had conservative, moderate and liberal wings. After the election of Ronald Reagan, the GOP became a mostly a conservative Party!
The only reason why Ford won the nomination was because he been in office for 2 1/2 years as president. But the good thing about this outcome is that Reagan would go on to win 2 terms in the 80's and cause the collapse of the "Evil Empire."

Imagine if Ronald Reagan was nominated in 1976, & had won the following fall. We could have been spared the malaise of the Carter years, Iran would have been handled much differently, history would have changed for the better.
@@proudhon100 In real world politics...wait for it...everybody negotiates with everybody. Only a tiny fraction result in strong agreements. Now, your source?
@@proudhon100 If it hadn't been dealing with nuclear weapons and the Soviets, I think Reagan probably would of taken out the Iran regime easily. I think Carter was too weak to deal with the Iranians.
@@zerimar26 The Iranians are the Persians. They withstood the attempt to get rid of them by foul means during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war when DC supplied loads of weapons, including gas weapons, to their then buddy Saddam Hussein. I think the current destruction of Amerika is being ordained by God, the father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, because of His hatred for your wanton bloodthirstiness, pursuing endless wars at the cost of countless millions of lives. Oh, did I mention the sixty million dead aborted babies? God is not mocked.
Ronald Reagan is the greatest president of my generation. I met him in 1980, and he let me take a few photos of him. That was the year he won the presidency. It will always be one of the best memories of my life. Thank you, Mr. President.

We'd have been much better off had Ford defeated Carter. Ford was hard-working and decent. Carter lacked the experience to be president and although he's done some wonderful things since he left the White House, he's turned his back on Israel. This is disturbing especially since he created permanent (hopefully) peace between Egypt and Israel.

1976 was a year that no one knew of Carter's ineptitude . Carter split with Ford . easy to assume reagan would have won the Ford states and some of the Southern states Carter won.
'He would OF beat....'!? Is that English? How about 'He would'VE'? If you're an admirer of Reagan and his policies, I wouldn't have you tagged as intelligent, educated and literate. But what we're talking about here is basic English literacy not rocket science.
Will never forgive the Republicans for not nominating Reagan in 76 he was primed here, a Reagan term 76-84 would have been solid instead of 81-88 because of his declining years in 87 and 88

Pres. Reagan was such a master on stage. It was Pres. Ford who motioned for Reagan to come on stage. Reagan said OK, if you insist. Reagan said a few words, and by the time he was finished, everyone realized that they had just nominated the wrong man. Pres. Reagan won his last election 49 States to One. They should "Update" Mt. Rushmore and add Pres. Reagan to the other .Presidents there. Maybe they could find a way to select one President from each party
I was a kid when Reagan was president. I don't know if he was a good one or bad one. This man looks like a president. Nowadays Trump is the face. Like night and day.
What a great Man Ronald Reagan I saw videos of him taking to college students, to working people, to families to seniors to children. He is patient, logical and empathetic, Sharp and understands people. A great president and leader of the free world.
@@andyecheandia8375 That one quip didn’t cost Ford anywhere near the dagger Reagan stabbed into Ford’s back. Reagan’s disloyalty was so bad that a faithless elector cast a vote for him which should have gone to Ford.
@@jorgejohnson451 Not at all. You are apparently unfamiliar with the history of the split within the republican Party between Conservatives and Moderates going back to Taft , dewy and Eisenhower years. This was continuing through the 60s with Goldwater's famous and disastrous run in 1964 and his feud with Rockefeller. Nixon put a temporary hold on that split but it resurfaced again BEFORE 1976, when Ford put Rockefeller as VP and THAT angered the Conservative wing, who then pushed for Reagan in 1976. Ford's quip reinforced an image with some that he was bumbling and stumbling. Alone it didn't turn the tide but certainly added to uncertainty about him.
@@andyecheandia8375 I’m familiar with the split. But you seem to forget my larger point: Reagan’s 11th Commandment, which he invoked when it was convenient and advantageous to himself.

Under reagan the deficiet exploded, the gap between the rich and the poor widened, the infrastructure deteriorated, the treasurey got busted, millions lost their jobs, and was left with a serious savings and loan mess.
