Whoa!!!!! All these guys are ripping it to pieces, this is unbelievable! These type bands like this, Fela Kuti, Zappa, Bela Fleck, etc etc. Tons of specialist musicians combined onstage, man I thank the Uni-verse for music! All the styles!

I can’t think of anyone who blended hip modern music with avant-garde jazz better than Ronald Shannon Jackson. dearly missed.

I agree, as amazing a drummer as he was, and he truly played with everyone... I actually think he was a very distinct and amazing composer who took Ornette's Prime Time Harmolodic thing to a whole other level of sophistication... was very lucky to see them twice in this period with the young Vernon Reid. once at the Newport Jazz Festival of all places and once opening for Blood Ulmer

Got to see this band at the Chicago jazz fest in 83'. A real eye opener to musical possibilities to my then 24 year old brain.

Man, Vernon Reid! Thanks for posting this. Always wanted to see Vernon before Living Colour.
@richwilliams7927
@richwilliams7927 5 лет назад
Living Colour were around for 5 years before they made an album. Mostly instrumental, and closer to the Decoding Society than their more radio-friendly stuff. I wish Vernon would resurrect some of that material.

Black Rock - James Blood Ulmer underpins this with a frantic ferocity of funk, blues, jazz and rock with the anarchy of punk. Give it a bash...you will not be disappointed!

The back and forth play between the bass and banjo (around 24:40 or so) is nice. Talented brothers.

Nice to hear Vernon Reid playing in a more traditional way - great stuff. The whole band sounds great, nice mix of trad + avant elements.

This was 40 years ago…. …VR is definitely playing way outside for 1983…
@egyptianminor
@egyptianminor 11 месяцев назад
What is meant is here, despite dissonant note choices and/or 'out' playing' Vernon is playing in a much more Swing Jazz-like, Bop phrasing oriented ways than he would in several years, with Living Color@@woodygould
@woodygould
@woodygould 11 месяцев назад
@@egyptianminor gee, and I felt that his playing turned much more mainstream, in terms of rhythmic structure, in Living Colour. Don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone describe Ronald Shannon Jackson’s time-playing as “Swing jazz like” before.
@egyptianminor
@egyptianminor 11 месяцев назад
Damn. did you actually read what I wrote? I wrote Vernon Reid"s playing, I'm talking an about Vernon Reid's playing not Ronald Shannon Jackson's playing. there's barely anything 'mainstream' about most (if not all ) Vernon' s solos in Living Color. Take for example there first single l'Cult of Personality' I don't think there is anything at all mainstream about it @@woodygould
@woodygould
@woodygould 11 месяцев назад
@@egyptianminor yeah, I read it. Vernon’s phrasing is draped over RSJ’s time-playing, which is way more complicated, and frankly, just plain stranger, than Calhoun’s with Living Colour. I remember hearing the opening tune in this video, on record (yep, actual 12” vinyl!) when it came out and thinking “How the &$@#$& does anyone solo over that rhythm?”

This video shows that Vernon Reid isn't a sloppy player like many people say he is.

Vernon Reid is anything but sloppy. Took guitarlessons from him in 1987.
@kaliyepalata9973
@kaliyepalata9973 4 года назад
@@peterpolfeldt3083 he does play sloppy because he doesn't care to be clean. It's not because he sucks. What did he teach you on guitar?

Kaliye Palata Basic tidyness😊 Arpeggios, clever ways to use the metronome, and to practice S L O W ! Bpm at 40. Place the metronome click ”off beat”(on the 16th before the one). Then he asked. What do you want to play? Command, authority on the guitar and a humble stance and a caring attittude! A great series of one hour meetings. Now 32 years ago.

I think "Magma" owes Ronald Shannon Jackson some royalties !! Very similar, but much better because it's not as vocal crazy, puts the vocalese in the guitar&bass .
