The Happy Camper, and his dog Angel, head out for a few days to Southwestern Ontario and visit some old stomp’n grounds he frequented while growing up. They base camped at Rondeau Provincial Park and went to day paddle a section of the Wallaceburg Water Trails (Running Creek, Syne River, Sydenham River loop). This area has countless options for paddling by canoe, kayak or SUP.

“I should have got more!” Truer words have never been spoken when it comes to The Sons of Kent. Great to see you highlight our park and the local waterways we play in all year (well not February). Welcome home😁

I love your videos and books Kevin, I spent my years 9 to 16 in Peterborough. My dad used to take me canoe camping in Algonquin every summer with his cedar and canvas canoe. That was a long time ago and I have lived all over the world since then. I just started my retirement, so with your books and those of others like Bill Mason, I am getting back into canoeing. Thanks man, I appreciate what you do.

Thanks for the reminder of great places for close to home adventures in southern Ontario. Lots of memories of camping at Rondeau, ice fishing at Mitchell's Bay and paddling on the Sydenham. Next time I'm down their I will have to look for that well named park.

From looking at the map, the park named Shiloh used to be called Blue Water Bible Conference. We used to live down the road back in the 1960's, but were never invited to visit even as neighbours. I am so glad it is now open to the public, it is such a beautiful property and views.

Next time you're in the sydenham you should check out the 30+ species of freshwater mussels that live there! I'll give you a guided tour of the mussels next time!

Absolutely love Rondeau. I have a family cottage in the park it is quite the gem of a spot. Great to see you out in that place. Love that you went to Molly and OJ's, Bayside and Rondeau Joes. I've been looking for more spots to canoe in the area when the bay gets windy and I didn't know about Wallaceburg so that is informative. Did you ever fish back in Long Pond when you used to go there?
@TheHappyCamper

Yes. I know that area. Is it still good fishing?

@@TheHappyCamper no motorized boats allowed anymore so hard to get back into, the few times I'd been lately the fishing was really great.

Good to see you traveling a familiar area, we have a cottage on Lake Erie not too far from Erieau. Molly & OJ's has great food and the Bayside Brewing Co. has good beer and good food as well.

What a nice relaxing trip! Enjoyed seeing the creek and the wildlife. We have lost a lot of shoreline to erosion on the southshore of Lake Michigan this year too.

Great info Kevin! My husband and I went to Rondeau in July, our first time, hopefully we can get back. Stunned by the beach and mature natural setting. Paddlers, we didn’t bring our canoe thinking only big water was the option (boring to us). Now we know there’s so much more to explore. Thanks 🙏🏻!

Have you ever taken that river route down to the St. Clair river? That river that runs northwest from Shiloh empties into the St. Clair river just north of the splitting of the river into a North and a South Channel. Just along the South channel along the shore of Russell Island at least used to be great for getting Walleye by drifting down the river and chugging. My Uncle has a cottage on the North channel on Harsen's Island. I spent many summer days of my youth in that area. Good times. Just think. If the American army/militia was better trained and prepared for the War of 1812, Canada might have been annexed by the US.

That's the one I haven't done yet. It's on my list. Love the water colour.

@@TheHappyCamper Once you get on the St. Clair River, you will have to be very careful of all the power boats and even the Freighters that are transiting the river.

Always like your videos Kevin, but went to Rondeau once and did not like it at all. We left a day early. Too crowded especially with the private cottages on the beach and open campsites. Keep the videos coming!!

Ya, the open campsites can be an issue if you get the wrong neighbours. I was lucky - and I didn't spend too much time on my site.

Why not use an inflatable PFD in the warm weather? Why are you in a tandem when not carrying camping gear?
@TheHappyCamper
@TheHappyCamper 4 года назад
I only own the one style of pfd. My solo Nova Craft Fox would have worked well - or my 15 ft Bob Special - but the 16 ft prospector was already on my vehicle from my last trip, so I went with that instead LOL

I'm from Southwestern Ontario (Kingsville), but haven't been back since the 90's. My mom used to take my brother and me camping in the summer, for a month at a time. We camped mostly in Pinery, Wheatley and Rondeau Provincial Parks. Being an outdoors kid, lead me to study at Sir Sandford Fleming College, in the Fish and Wildlife program. I actually had you as my instructor for a trail design course in 1998. Thanks for making these great videos!!
