Brilliant Idea to revisit the dojo pro, your Ronin reviews of yesterday were some of my favorites, the dojo pro is still a Dotanuki correct? I will very much look foward to see how it holds up to the new Crochet stick of doom thingy, That was awesome of Ronin, but hey I'm sure you sold them many swords through the years...great vid, nice to see these swords coming

Looking forward to the reviews. Interesting "seax" they sent you. Even if it doesn't bear much resemblance to an actual seax, it looks like it's a fun short sword/long knife.

I have no idea if there are any historical examples with that type of hilt but I don't know of any. Might be something form the curio cabinet but still a fun thing.

After watching a ton of your videos I ordered a dojo pro and an RK myself from their scratch and dent sale. Just got both today and man they are AWESOME! Only complaint is the tsuka wrap is a little loose, as you've mentioned before. Other than that, they are fantastic. Thanks for your videos and insights!

@davidmcaliley3495
@davidmcaliley3495 2 года назад
@@Matthew_Jensen I thought about that, but don't have any real experience with that kind of thing. I also have a tenchi ko-katana from Cheness that I need to get the tsuka fully redone. One of the pegs broke, the other is brass, the wrap is all kinds of horrible, and the wood is visible in several places. Tried disassembling the tsuka, but I think it may be epoxied onto the tang because I couldn't get it loose even after the pegs were removed. I figure if I can find a good shop to replace the tsuka on the Cheness then I might just get them to do a rewrap on the other two with a thicker cord.

I would really like to see some more traditional targets. Here are some various types and combinations I can think of: Wara Tatami (as you do sometimes) Hardened Bamboo (harvested after the leaves near the root have withered and fallen off) Wara wrapped in a tatami Bamboo wrapped in tatami These are probably the main types of targets that matter. It's nice that the sword can handle abuse, but none of that matter if it doesn't do well on these targets.
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 2 года назад
Would love to do it but it is a costly proposition. I don't have bamboo but I am thinking about growing some this year. Tatami is getting harder to come by.

I had such a headache getting a serviceable Dojo Pro this past year or so. Maybe it's a Covid thing, but I ordered 4 Dojo Pros and only 1 came 'as advertised.' 2 had loose kashira that could be easily wiggled right off the tsuka, and for one of those, the ito came untied at the kashira just by probing the diamonds for tightness. The one that was loose but didn't get untied also had a koiguchi that seemed almost filed down, causing a super loose fit with the hibaki (generally, Dojo Pros seem to have the best saya of this price point). The one that showed up as I hoped (#13) looks good. The kashira is mercifully snug, and the ito, while not exactly tight, is fine. My only real gripe is that the tsuka shape is a little dainty for how much steel and iron (the tsuba on this model is a very thick disk of hammered iron) you have in front of you. Something more like a Hanwei tsuka might actually feel better in this case. My only real gripe is that the saya seems to have a wax coating inside it that gets on the blade every time it's sheathed/unsheathed (all had this). The blade on 3 out of the 4 looked great (the other one had a gouge near the hibaki). All in all, not really worth the headache for me trying to get one that didn't come DOA. Two were ordered from SBG and 2 from Kult. The good one was from SBG. Maybe in a post covid world, this doesn't happen, who knows. If they came as expected every time you ordered one, then I'd say they are worth it. But with the shoddy QC, I'd probably stay away.

Was disappointed with their Dojo Pro (#18 or #19, one with moon tsuba) blade was nice but tsuka was terrible. Their euro model 2 I love though. Cool they threw in the extras for ya
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 2 года назад
what was bad about the tsuka? Loose ito or bad shape?
@erichusayn
@erichusayn 2 года назад
@@Matthew_Jensen ito was very loose, tsuka was off kilter, which made edge alignment extremely difficult, but I guess that really didn't matter though, cuz first time I took her out, the kashira was literally dangling by the ito before I had even made 10 cuts... Mind you this was long before I was uploading, and was my 3rd katana purchase ever. Still have all the parts and blade and everything. Really liked the tsuba with the clouds and moon, and knowing what I know now, the blade is well done for a "Beater style" 1060 and that "dotanuki" Blade geometry has the heft while at the same time decent balance, plus the nice beefy diamond on the mune near kissaki, but what good is that if the tsuka is off line, let alone the kashira dangling. Lol. Knowing what I know now, I would've emailed them and asked for a replacement tsuka (I know they sell them on their site, or at least used to). As it's been so long, I may just buy one down the road eventually to get some use out of the blade.

I have an off topic question that I hope you see and have the time to give some advice. I bought a Mushashi. Katana that’s supposed to be clay tempered all that goes along with that type of blade tempering process. I took it out to the backyard to do a cutting test with a gallon jug of water. I cut through the jug as if it were made of butter. It was so easy and I was excited. When I checked my blade the edge had rolled in a few places and the thing that surprised me the most was the blade actually bent. I don’t understand how this could have happened when all the blade came into contact with was the thin plastic in the middle of the jug of water. The company that I bought it from wouldn’t do anything for me since I had waited over 30 days before testing the blade.
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 2 года назад
Did you have cuts that did not go well or just the one bottle? Did you cut the neck of the bottle?
@carlpowers7291
@carlpowers7291 2 года назад
@@Matthew_Jensen Thanks for getting back to me. Actually it was the first and only cut and the cut was in the middle of the gallon jug where the plastic is the most thin. I had previously cut a gallon of water with a sword that I paid less for and had zero issues. I have to admit that the cut itself was beautiful and straight but the blade was bent and like it said the edge rolled in a few spots

Thanks for the great videos. Just curious to how tall you are, and how you feel with the 28" blade on the Dojo Pro #30 vs maybe a 29" or longer blade. I'm 5'10" and wondering if a 29" would be right for me.
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 3 месяца назад
It depends a bit on preference and the style you do. 29" might be a little long but it depends. DO you have any swords today?
@alexc2234

@@Matthew_Jensen I do, I have a wall hanger lol and it feels a bit short at 27.5". My new Ronin Dojo Pro #8 just arrived and is just over 28.5" (tsuba to kissaki) and letting it hang at my side reaches my ankle bone. The balance is comfortable and I wonder how the weight/balance of a 30" (prob 29.5") would feel. It would probably just miss the ground at attention.

@davidlarre773

Hello, David from Spain. If you have a maximum budget of 600 dollars... What is the katana with the best cutting capacity/resistance ratio that you have tried? Which one would you stay with? Thanks!
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 2 года назад
Assuming you mean cutting tatami or something similar, the practical or musashi XL from Hanwei is hard to beet. They hold up well too. For light cutting I would go another direction. Resilience in that budget has been the dojo pro or the Byzer S7. Neither were bad cutters but not at the same level for tatami as the Hanwei XL line. They hold up to shock a bit better though.

@@Matthew_Jensen Thanks. And now, regardless of the money... What is the most indestructible katana with a good cut (even if it is not the best cut) that you have tried?
@davidlarre773
@davidlarre773 2 года назад
@@al-tb8my checked. Also just today I had seen your video of the dojo pro 20. As I have put in comments... if I had to choose a katana for a zombie apocalypse I would choose a dojo pro. I don't know if these katanas that are now made of alloyed steel can overcome this resistance (I still have a lot to learn about this world), I presume that they will also be much more expensive. So far my conclusion is…if you want to perfect your technique and cut…well balanced 1095 or T10 steel. If you want a tough, all-terrain weapon...a ronin dojo pro. I bought a practical yarinohanzo because it was my first katana and I didn't want to spend too much in case I destroyed it....and now I would have bought a dojo pro even if it had cost more. Thank you.
