I also once spoke shortly with Jimi. It was after a concert in Gothenburg, Sweden, in september 1967. It was a lousy concert, because there was a technical problem that sometimes made Jimi’s guitar silent, often in the middle of a solo. After some seconds it came back and then it disappeared again some minutes later. Jimi got pissed of course, changed guitars, pedals and cords, but nothing helped. Finally he throwed a silent guitar over his shoulder and left the stage - then the sound came back and we heard something like an airplane crash. I got the opportunity to visit him behind stage, and he seemed to be annoyed over the bad performance. So what is a 13-year old guy supposed to say to someone he already know will be a legend? I started with; ”Great concert tonight!” Jimi looked puzzled and then started to laugh - guess he realized I tried to do my best to cheer him up. Anyhow, I use to say about this short meeting with Jimi, that I once made Hendrix laugh.
Someone was saying how nobody cares about a story about Jimi, I do, maybe I'm in the minority but I'm always facinated to hear tales of those times. I can't get enough Jimi talk to be honest. My guess is I'm not alone.
I'm with you. I always love to hear stories from Jimi's peers or anybody who knew him for that matter. Even Robert Fripp who was from an entirely different music camp had an interesting encounter with him. Apparently Jimi was a big fan of King Crimson, and introduced himself to Fripp by saying "I want to shake your hand with this hand, it's closer to my heart." Cool stuff!
Yeah Clapton had said that in an old interview. That he didn't wanna hear stories about Hendrix anymore, but it was obvious that he was just incredibly heartbroken that he lost not only someone who understood the way his mind worked musically, but also just a good friend. It's sad.
You want another Jimi story?..... not that I ever met him, I was only 17 when he died. But 8 years later I had a houseful of musicians at the top of their game including one legendary guitarist, one great guitarist and one very good one among the various instrumentalists. We were chatting about other guitar players, their styles, riffs and licks, but there was one obvious player that nobody mentioned. In my amateur naivety I asked the legendary player, "What do you think about Jimi Hendrix?". The room instantly went silent as if someone had pulled a plug, and ten to fifteen very awkward seconds crawled by before the very good player released everyone from the spell by emphatically stating, "He's dead". It was as if every brick in the building had heaved a huge communal sigh of relief. "Yes" agreed the legend, "That's right, he's dead." But there was still a lot of unease in the room. The great player added, "He was a genius, but he's not around anymore." Someone else said, "He's in the past." With everyone but me apparently satisfied with that appraisal, conversation picked up again on another topic . I was shocked and confused by this reaction and it took a few more months of associating with professional muso's for me to work it out. They were still afraid of him. He had been dead for 8 years but all it took was the mere mention of his name to shake their egos so much that they returned to the state of "How can I compete with that?"
Jimi's voice is beautiful especially on songs such as Angel, Castles made of sand, Wind cries Mary, Little Wing, actually his voice is great on everything he sang on. I also think Jimi was a great lyricist/songwriter the fact that his guitar playing was years ahead of its time overshadows his songwriting talents.
I read recently that John Lennon also could not stand the sound of his own voice. Two of my favorite singers/musicians. Moral of the story? The things you don't love about yourself might still be a gift to the world somehow.
@MichaelKingsfordGray Little troll roaming around the comments section here calling people cowards for some reason. Most people wouldn’t even dignify your hateful words but I’m going to anyways because you’re in desperate need of some unsolicited advice and are seeking attention anyways. I’ve got news for you man, positivity is a universal trait and certainly something Jimi would’ve appreciated. Clearly you can’t grasp that and I’m sorry you feel compelled to try and start arguments with strangers on the internet for no reason (you know better not to but choose to anyways). It doesn’t help you or anyone else here, and also what you’re trying to say makes literally no sense whatsoever. I find it strange that in my attempt to admire an artist I’ve cared about for years, you still find a way to complain about it. Best of luck and hope you find peace.
Cal Congo yes! Hearing Jimi sing when he wanted to sound sweet, was like falling into a field of lavender , and one could breathe deeply of the beauty in him. As in the sweet parts of “Are You Experienced?”; another way his singing could make me feel was as though our Spirits were flying, free and timeless. Remember all the possibilities we believed in for awhile? Like love and peace and no more war...sigh.
And the wind with its old age, it's crush and it's wisdom, whispers no, this will be the last.... I loved his voice, his guitar and his lyrics. Jimmy was not from this planet or even this universe.
Hey guys, I found that Guitar Player interview out on Google -Read This:James: But those things were somehow secondary to the flow. He used to come in - remember that time in New York when he played that club there with B.B. King? Sam: Yeah, Generations. Right after Martin Luther King. James: Yeah. The same week we were there with B.B. King, and Martin Luther King got shot. B.B. King really played his set to him, just really played beautifully. B.B. King played so beautifully and delicately that night for Martin Luther King. He was fantastic. But anyways, Hendrix came in every night that week and jammed. They stayed open all night. After the regular scheduled acts were over, they stayed open all night for jam sessions. And Hendrix came in every night, and he played everything under the sun! He played all the Beatles stuff, he played Bach, Beethoven - on the electric guitar. And not only that, he could play the guitar right-handed and left-handed. Either handed! You saw him do this? James: Yeah! Upside-down. Sam: That’s a fact. James: He played his guitar [points to Sam]. Did he flip it over to play it? James: Either way! Sam: He would flip it over. He could play it both ways, or restrung so it’d be right for a left-hander. James: Right. He could play right-handed guitar left-handed, left-handed guitar right handed, right-handed guitar right handed, and left-handed guitar left handed. Sam: And it wasn’t like he was compromising because it’s a harder position. It was all the same level of musicianship. James: Yeah. I could not tell any difference when I was listening to him play - we sat there all night for a whole week, every night, with him playing. And he played all night long.
Hendrix' voice was incredible. Average singer but awesome voice, and that's what matters. It sounded weakest live, as he played highly complex guitar when he sang which stole his concentration. But in the studio, one of the coolest voices in rock
I feel up with him. My brother brought him home. He slept in my closet but loved on my record player. A very quiet roommate for the most part . .... especially when my parents were home. But when they left to go to work, he was so loud that he scared my dog away He also responsible for getting g the cops called to our house. I was only 10 when he moved in but he inspired me to jump on the couch with a broom and play air guitar. H played Purple Haze at my grade school, behind the bus garage, while I danced cedar with Ramona, the first hippie chick I was ever sprung up on. She showed me how to do the "Dirty Dog" and she proved to be.Good times. He even inspired me to write songs and play monster guitar. Which I still do. Then there was this .... rumor that he passed away. But there's no way that's true because he still sleeps in my closet, and comes alive on my record player. I love him like a brother. Pretty sure he'll never ever leavee, entirely. Hes been round too long to leave now. 😎😎😎
Loved Jimi's speaking voice and loved his singing even more, his vocal melody and phrasing was incredibly free and spontaneous which I think matches his music perfectly considering the incredibly far out statements and stories he was singing, just makes it even more mesmerising And Ron Wood was an incredible bass player, man!! Can't forget Ronnie either
It's a pity he died so young. He'd have been playing the coolest stuff as he got older... The guy played a Right handed guitar, left handed, but strung upside down,so you would think that the harmonics would be all over the place...& when he tuned it, it sure sounded like it, & you'd think; "that sounds fucked", but as soon as he played, the bloody thing sounded Gorgeous! He was a genius, & lot's have tried to imitate since, but he was the first...a true original. Up themselves hating tossers should try to make a similar impact. I bet you can't!
This is a pretty good example of the difficulty of the rock and roll life. So much is put into making music that everything else is put on the back burner - friends, family, health, living a normal life. The best make a lot of money, but the money doesn't change the fact that they live a life of sacrifice. For sure there's a lot of ego involved and love of fan adulation, but the music is always number one. We get to enjoy it, and our lives would be lesser without it.
And still when he died he had nothing more than a hundred dollars in his bank account. Jimi's not just the greatest guitar player ever, but also one of the most financially abused artist in music's history.
truegangsteroflove Unlike da GREAT majority of peephole, Jimi knew $, had no real value. Itz only DUH ILLusion, dat $ iz sumthin 2 b worshipped, dat givez da ILLumiNAUGHTY/$, power & CONtrol over most of da human race. $, iz not natural & it does not cum from God/grow on treez. There4, it holdz lil real value, BUTT DUH value we ndow it wit. Of course, surrounded by peephole, who were mesmerized by his SUPPOSED wealth & ceberity, I'm sure Jimi started caring about it a lil mo. After-all.... U only git about 15 minutez n da spotlite. Tho I think Jimiz new material, wuz on point, there were those, who were not so confident n his new stuff/direction. They didn't want him workin wit brothaz, xpanding his band, & gittin mo n2 his funky/soul brotha side. They wanted him 2 CONtinue playin rock wit da 2 SO CALLED whiteboyz, & touring ncessantly, while they raked n all da dough from da ef4tz, of The Experience! Letz say Jimi didn't die & these peepz were afraid 2 push dis new muzak & lo & bhold, Jimi wuz broke & destitute again. I'm sure all of da God-like adulation, woulda dried-up, REAL FAST, cause all muggafuggaz care about, iz cash. Whorez of babble-on, baby!
LOVE how REAL musicians LIKE Ronnie Wood NEVER overplay their ROCKSTAR associations to make it sound LIKE they'd HUNG OUT more than they ACTUALLY did. And you can HEAR the annoyance in his voice just like he's a regular guy when he talks about Jimi being able to swap hands when playing the guitar and STILL being able to play well BOTH ways...effortlessly!
they say dogs get their personality's from their owner's you know how awesome it would be if a dog acted just like jimi Hendrix I've never been a thief the most I've ever stolen was a butter finger from Walmart during Halloween and it was in one of those big party size bags and it was already open so I was like well they can't sale it anyways so why not anyways I'm not a thief but I would totally try to steal that dog and I would totally do a bunch of psychedelics with that dog along with jamming out with that dog cause I know guitar is a skill its not really your personality but in jimi's case it was his personality that beautiful, crazy, loving, sexy, chill, humorous, integrative way of playing matched perfectly with his way of talking, thinking, possibly love making etc he was one of the very few musicians out there that truly expressed their selves throw music a lot of great sounding people throughout the years have simply sounded good but jimi was some magical force of nature that was given to us that we unfortunately will most likely never see again.
Jimi's girlfriend at the time, Kathy Etchingham kinda confirms this. She said she gave Jimi a dog for his birthday. After a while, it became to hard for them to manage. She says in her book "they gave the dog to a friend, I think it was Jeff Beck." So Ron Wood is likely telling the truth about it and Kathy, by her own admission is a little confused on exactly who they gave the dog to.
ShaunPhillipsAV Thanks a ton for that info. I never knew this. Cool story. If I were Jeff I would have written a song about owning a canine that Hendrix once owned...just for something fun to write about. That's a cool story.
The reality of JH is that there was Jimi, the shy, introverted, soft-spoken genius, and then there was "Hendrix," this outrageous persona who lit guitars on fire, did six-string cunnilingus, behind his back, all that - which with his hip clothes and "screwed-down hairdo" - all stuff that record company marketers went crazy promoting. And while he was the ultimate showman and he initially had fun with his image stuff, he nonetheless eventually turned introspective, chemically abusive, and began to hate the caricature that he was expected to go out on stage and present every show - like a performing bear in a carnival. By Woodstock he was pretty burned out. And he wanted to take his music into more serious places - probably on some amazing street where blues, rock and jazz meet. But his handlers wanted what brought the most $$$ in. But the Hendrix who had far bigger musical dreams - THAT is Jimi I so wish we'd kept with us. Who KNOWS what incredible music he no doubt would have produced. Astounding to realize that, if still living, he'd be 77 years old! THINK about it: Hendrix' entire recording career, including his period before becoming a headliner, was only about 5-6 years, and yet here we all are, 50 years on, around the world, STILL talking about this fascinating musician from another time. And that mostly has zero to do with the pop mythology and antics so associated with him. No, it's because his MUSIC is still fresh, surprising, and exceptionally innovative, unique and listenable! Even just as a guitarist of influence and technique, he got more kids into learning and being obsessed with guitar than anyone I can think of. How many Stratocasters were bought because Jimi popularized them so prolifically???!!! He was a one-off - as very few musicians of any era have such wide and lasting influence!
Ron Wood is a totally underrated/under appreciated musician on both sides of the ocean. I saw him slay Clapton on TV once and I bet he doesn't think so. A monster on guitar and bass. You all better recognize.
I'm one of the biggest Rolling Stones fans you'll ever meet, but to be honest they hold Ronnie back if you want my honest opinion. What he plays for the Stones won't ever be as good as what he did with the faces.
There is a video on youtube of Ron Wood playing blues with Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang. To say Ron stole the show would be an understatement. Awesome guitarist indeed!
Wow, that's almost like a lost dream or a daydream or a classic Bogart movie of some sort... Goodbye....(long pause)........... and then he was gone...... **chuckle** ....... The End........
I marvel at Jimi's guitar prowess. No one played a guitar like him. Yes, there are brilliant, technical guitarists, but they don't touch what Jimi did. Indescribable really, he just figured out the sounds he wanted from the guitar, and made them happen. I don't expect to see talent like that again.
Ehh.. Jimi was great don't get me wrong at all but I don't think he lives up to his billing when it comes to songwriting. I like his songs but for as much as he's talked up you'd think he was the greatest songwriters/technical musician of all time. There are several people I would put before him as better overall musicians but I won't get into that. My point is only that Jimi was obviously great and I like his music *but* he's over hyped IMO. Again I don't want to offend any Jimi fans (as I am one) but no single musician should be talked up this much.
shaun sweeney Yeah he definitely earned his stripes. I personally don't think that the way you look or the way you move has any real impact on your actual music. I can't see him moving or what he's wearing when I listen to his albums. He was a great musician don't get me wrong but sometimes he's just put too high up on that pedestal you know?
lasoogneypubes Exactly. Yes, no disputing the guy was good. I saw him live twice. He wasn't as good as other guitarist I've seen. Too much shock and awe not enough real substance. I do like a few albums that I play every now and again but no more than other artists.
I had a very short glimpse dream about him when i was 14 and he was alive playing gigs in California. I can still see the glimpse 51 years later exactly. I wasnt a big fan and haven't followed his music over the decades so I'm discovering it now and it's obvious everything about him, clothes, music, all of it, was 50 to 100 years ahead of the times. His interviews and comments were so intelligent, it seems like he's alive today.
Ronnie's talent a bit wasted in the RS but still my favorite of the RS. The Faces would have had even more to give creatively, but their influence in their styles was much greater than most.
Obviously, Jimi was one of the greatest ever, I loved his music, he influenced me greatly. But I vividly remember another story in Guitar Player Magazine by James Gurley, guitarist with Janis Joplin, recalling that Hendrix could play guitar "either way", right or left handed, strung either way! This was collaborated by Sam Andrew, also with Janis' band. - I just don't understand why no photos of this exist. Strange.
Jimi may have not liked his voice but myself and I am sure millions of others feel, we loved it! I couldn't imagine any other voice to fit that amazing guitar work. His voice was as unique and honest as was his playing. God bless JIMI.
I have such high regard for Woody, after all the greats he’s played with, AND who respect him. Back when he knew Jimi, neither of them were yet full versions of the guys they’d become.
I think its bullshit because you say you shared a flat with Jimi then you say the few nights we spent together which was it you shared a flat or you just spent a few nights together every body wants to get into some part of Jimi Hendrixs life span which wasn't long
Cool story Ronnie. Amazing that Jimi could play equally well with both hands; I could see how that would be annoying to a fellow professional guitarist! 😀
According to legend, Jimi was left handed but playing on guitar on the left side is a "sign of the devil" ..he had very religious father so he had to play on the other side everytime he was around :)
+Tambourine Man hey you tambourine loving fuck he's right when jimi was a kid his past time was laying in bed playing his gee tar him and his sister and brother had bunk beds and when ever their dad would open up the door jimi would switch over and play right handed it's in his auto biography if I had it with me I'd even tell you what page number it was on. PIZZA FORGET ABOUT IT!!!
He appeared in on of my dreams some years ago..playing right handed..I think he was trying to teach me the wack lick he was playing..never figured it out... Never dreamed with Hendrix again :(
If Jimi Hendrix broke any more ground in the world of rock n' roll, he'd have caused an actual earthquake. ALL those haters commenting on the many fans' posts here should keep in mind EVERY guitarist making music commercially is a genius in their own right. "Wars" over who was better than who are pointless and in my ho, STUPID.
I've ALWAYS hated my voice. Lots of people do, because it sounds so different when it's not vibrating through your skull, to your ear. Ron has seen some shit!!
I was destroyed when I heard of his death. I saw him play at The Royal Albert Hall. I heard he used to swap guitars with the bass player but he didn't on this occasion. R.I.P. Jimi Hendrix
@@Leo-dr4qm Thanks for the comment even if it was meant as a put down. I'd forgotten about this clip and still think it is beautiful and moving. Jimi Hendrix was a huge part of my life growing up and so were the Stones. In a way current "musicians" can never be.
Not a put down it's just people invent things ..an artist like Ronnie pictures etc read his diary no mention..same with Janis Joplin jumping on him Ronnie and rod Stewart..were not in that immediate circle in 60s rod the mod used follow Brian Jones like a lap dog
These Ronnie Wood youtube things are great. I like that they're short. I usually rip through a few of them obsessively. Keep it up, Ronnie! Love it! He's a great personality to do this, too. Perfect.
I'm not one of them social justice freaks in anyway But i listen the Ronnie finish his story @ 1:14 and i can't help but think this is the exact thing Jimi would have dealt with in the state's in the 1960s, Someone not of his race trying to force him into doing or saying something he doesn't want to do, I wonder if Ronnie realizes just how Screwed up this really sound's I'm guessing no he's clueless. I'm not seeing Ronnie in the best light here.
1:12 "...and the last time I saw him he had eh, his arm round a girl, leaving Ronnie Scotts, and I said to him 'hey Jimi, say goodninght'..." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zvpwF0NBY28.html
Musician/Singers can at times, dislike their own voice. A true fan just loves to hear them sing though ; even if it's the phone book. (remember those things?)
hey ronnie, back in the eighties i was in the upstairs of a pub- private function after a guitar show in london, trying to get served.. you pushed in and got served before everybody else.. i was thinking whos that scruffy guy pushing in.. when i sat down you and charlie were at the table next to us.. my boss said, yeah thats ronnie wood from the stones..good story about jimi!
its great how he admits seeing jimi swap from left to right playing equally well both ways and being upset and amazed at the same time. RW obviously is solid with himself to be truthful about this. Nice to see honesty from a self secure person.
This is so simple and yet I find it incredibly touching, about his voice and about his 'annoying' talent (!) and about the final 'goodnight'..few tears here, 50 years later
Ronnie, I'm looking for Nick Evans. I would like to get in touch with him. My understanding is that you painted a portrait of him? He ran an after hours pub in London that was popular with rock stars. We were bros in LA '66-'68. Amazing adventures at that time. Since he was born in England, he got out while the Viet Nam war heating up to escape the draft. Tell Nick I have a picture of him meditating on Rincon Beach near Santa Barbara 1968.
There's one guy who can do it both lefty or righty seen him do it in Atlantic City years back. Mr Buddy Guy. No one can cut Buddy you have to see him to believe it. Holds the guitar no strap with his left hand only fully extended from his body and plays it like the fucking guitar was playing by itself
I didn't meet, speak with, or hang out with Jimi. But I certainly got a huge crush on him when my parents took us to see the film Rainbow Bridge. I was in 6th grade. He was so handsome, sexy, and his music so excellent. How could one not?
Wonderfully, please go to your RU-vid and just put in (Stewart Barnes and the Stewart Barnes band) Stewart Barnes from yorkshire England born 1945 played like this before he saw Hendrix, olso look for White rose band Wembley, it's Stewart Barnes his band, the were backing American artists at the Wembley country festival, Stewart Barnes passed away some years ago
From one Woody to another ✌🏽😎by the by people have added an s to my name my whole, what’s maybe funny is that everyone know how much I dig music and people have said to me often “your name is almost Ronnie Woods. 😂😂😂
Love the interview by Eddie Kramer the sound engineer saying Jimi had sound wall put up around him and would peek around to look at Eddie OK!! ROLLEM AND TAKE OFF INTO NEXT SONG 🎵 🎶 😍 👌
wish youtube had a "heart check mark"...I dont really like the stones, or jimi all that much...butt man, I respect the talent...and well...this makes me so, really sad
