ROOF SNOW-LOAD PROBLEMS (Off Grid Living)

We tackled the shop building this week. We need a place to set up and organize our tools and this old building is just the thing. We started by shoveling part of the roof and it was a good thing we did. Those old rafters would make some good sled runners. The are badly bent and on the verge of failure. We will start by installing a temporary wood stove first, so we can warm the place up, then we will pay some attention to that old roof system.
Spring is just around the corner now and the snow will soon be receding noticeably. That means mosquitos will be out soon! There is a tradeoff with everything isn't there?
Also, we have received a number of requests for our mailing address. In response, we opened up a post office box to share with you.
Correspondence can be sent to: PO Box 58228, North Pole, Alaska 99711
Enjoy the video!

My wife and I truly enjoy watching your videos and various projects. Your cabin looks very cozy and inviting. Whenever you have comments at the end of the video it’s almost like we are sitting around the fire having coffee with you. Thanks for the video work you do. We appreciate you ! Tim and Christie

What an utterly charming episode of your continuing life in Alaska. The way you took time out again to include the viewer responses and your own appreciation was very endearing. My son and daughter in law and three grandchildren have just returned to the Faroe Islands after their visit here to Scotland. One of my favourite words from Faroe is the word 'hygge' which can mean to embrace but it is a much fuller word than that. It can mean 'to comfort' but it is most often translated as 'cosy'. It is the feeling engendered by low light from a fire in a cabin in the snow: you evoke feelings of wanting to join you in sharing stories round the fire. But it was also the way you interact and kid each other on as you shovel snow off a roof or venture onto deep snow to look in the attic of the workshop. It also includes making fish soup with you at the stove and sitting in companionable silence around a dinner table. You give us far more than mere images - you give us longing for fellowship and friendship and that is an incredibly rare thing to do through RU-vid. Every blessing as you share your life with us.

Good morning Jim. We appreciate you so much. Interestingly, we just received a book on the word ‘hygge’. It is such an intriguing idea and we want to learn more about it. It makes us happy to hear the people feel a connection to us through our videos. We love that. We are all one big family after all, and share so many common experiences together. Talking about these things with each other just draws everyone a little closer together. Much love to you my friend. Blessings

"Squirrel Squatter"..... I had a big laugh over that moniker Gale..... That little critter found himself a 5 star accommodations for the winter. I heard that soft spot in your heart when you told us how you replaced his mushroom stash after stacking your wood. You are a sweetheart.......... This episode was especially touching for me when I watched the 3 of you ride off on the snow machine in the vast white wonderland. You are living a real life that a writer could not put into words. How I envy your life in Alaska. It seems to be a daily adventure and living out your dreams. (I feel sure though that you have worked very hard to get to this time in your life) What a blessing it would be to have the fun, loving marriage that you that I see in each video........

I saw 58 minutes and thought woo-hoo, an hour in Alaska. Then when we came to the end, I thought no way that was an hour long. Haha. Time flies when you're having fun. Got a chuckle out of you saying she laughs when you get hurt... only because my wife and kid rush to see if I'm okay and then laugh about it for years, never forgetting. Appreciate your letting me journey with you a while, take care until next time.

I just love you two! Spent last night in the emergency room with blood pressure reading of 210/110. ER docs gave me Ativan and a concoction of beta blockers and it barely lowered my pressure. They left me alone and told me to relax. I proceeded to pull out my phone and watch this upload. The automatic cuff was attached to my arm and was going off every 10 minutes followed by an annoying set of alarms. After watching you guys the alarms stopped and my pressure had dropped to 140/95. The doctor was amazed how much calmer I was after released me to go home. Another wonderful upload full of insight, personality, and humor. Gale continues to do the workload of 10 men and Tanya, may I say that everything about you radiates joy. Your smile and personality are simply infectious! The best channel on RU-vid continues to find ways to impress every week! Peace.................

I’m sure it’s not possible to do that now though. Huge congratulations to you Gale. It’s not only the work you get through but the videoing on top takes a lot of time I believe. Kim, thank you! A week ago that cowboy hat story would have shocked me but not today! When they break in they cover every inch of the place at hyper speed the same way they run up and down trees and leap branch to branch!!! I can picture them swinging from the chandeliers 😂. Did you ever ready the children’s book, Miss Suzy? It all came back to me lol. I’m glad someone can commiserate! It’s good to have you here friend. Take care! 😊

HiHo from Sarasota, Florida!! Well, Fred and I were RIVETED to the "Big Screen" today, watching the latest hour-long video from Alaska. We had so much fun watching you-all, and laughing along with you, that we wished the video was TWO hours long instead of just one. First, it was great to see the actual "ground" where the snow had melted . . . almost like Spring is already there. I'm sure that Stella is convinced that Spring has arrived. She is SO excited about being able to run and jump and play. You DIDN'T have her "shaved" too soon; I think having her clipped brought on the warm weather. And, you both seemed less stressed and more excited about the project. We LOVE the new workshop and the "barrel stove," as well. Fred is familiar with barrel stoves, as he grew up in the country; where as I'm a city girl, complete with a lifelong familiarity with natural gas heat!! It was really cool seeing the walls in the workshop fall and get stacked along the other wall, for future use. Never know when you're going to need an "old wall!" Finally, we were really excited to arrive with you at the "other" cabin. When we started watching your channel a year ago, one of our fondest memories was of Gale lying on his back on the second floor, nailing used boards to the studs. The bedroom has turned out so beautifully and we love the decor - quilts, pillows, etc. - in that room. Quilts are MY Thing - in one of my last lives, I owned a B&B with 600 feet of frontage on Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin. The Main House was a 4,000 sq. ft. "cabin" with four bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, wood burning fireplaces/stoves, and TONS of handmade quilts on the beds and thrown over chairs and sofas. There were four small cottages as well. I miss it but life has taken me to new and more rewarding places. So, we knew, the minute you rode up over the crest and around the back of your cabin that it was the place where Gale had built that beautiful Sauna and we watched you smoke salmon filets after last year's fishing trip. We also have fond memories of your New Year's Eve "date" and the toast, Brie and apple slices. Very heart-warming! Fred and I often talk about how most of Life's satisfaction is found "in the grind." We've worked long and hard in our lives and now, we're enjoying watching you both pursue more of Life's satisfaction in your grind. Much Love to you-all. Have a GREAT day, unless you have other plans!! Regards, Leslie Ann and Fred

We are amazed at not only your work effort, but the skills you have with your equipment. Your problem solving skills amaze me. We live in the central to northern art of our state on the Kennebec River, our retirement home. No, I did not build it, as I can’t cut a straight line to save my soul. My skills lay elsewhere, LOL. I just wanted to say it’s nice to see your bride on this series, she is a lovely lady and has many skills of her own the best is supporting you and your passion. As we sit here having completed chores, dogs, we will be diving into the current video. Have a great day. Oh one other thing, we can relate with the snow you have, we used to get that here, but not so much anymore. Salmon is my favorite food. This is the second time this week I've heard about Copper Reds. Simple Living Alaska, another lovely couple, transplanted from Oregon to homestead in Alaska. Their latest post was a fishing trip to the Copper River. They caught as much as they could carry and still didn't reach their quota. They smoked it and canned it. They used every bit of the fish. They even made dog food. Everything looked so awesome. I'm looking forward to your trip to the Copper River! Stella is such a happy girl. She gets to share in everything you do. That's doggie heaven!

I loved your banter regarding the teacup and it got me to thinking about the definition of it. “A teacup is a cup for drinking tea. It may be with a handle, generally a small one that may be grasped with the thumb and one or two fingers. It is typically made of a ceramic material. It is usually part of a set, composed of a cup and a matching saucer or a trio that includes a small cake or sandwich plate.” I tend to drink coffee in a china mug, always tastes better with fine bone china. I’m so enjoying your renovations/rebuilding of these dwellings, looking forward to the next video. 😊

Thanks so much Craig. My father was a concrete contractor here in Alaska, from 1967 through the early 1980’s. He did a lot of flatwork and CMU, but he was particularly known for his stone fireplaces. That was probably his favorite thing to build. He has since passed away but his work is still visible all around town.

@@ThisIsMyAlaska Concrete work in those freezing temps is a challenge. Your dad must have been top tier of the trade. I have to agree with you, driving around and remembering a project you did in a specific area is always such a joy. Remembering your dad by seeing the chimneys must be really nostalgic. What I also enjoy about watching and following your channel is the difference in terminology we have across the world. Something as simple as a laminated beam, you call it a Pine glue lambeam. We just call it a lambeam, because we only get 'em in pine and assume it is glued I guess. Oh and by the way good luck with those rafters, bit more than a deflection or a slight bow to deal with there. I suspect you will be doing some reinforcing in between the rafters and then remove all the old ones, or rip off the whole roof and start from scratch, weather permitting. Looking forward to see what guess comes to fruition. Anyway love the content!

Another awesome video. I remember the first video I watched of yours. It was when you first started posting and I was hooked. I felt like I could visit Alaska without having to get on a plane and fly there! I've been hooked ever since. I only recently started commenting but it has been a good journey with you all! Talking about snow removal!!! I can't believe all the snow you've had to remove...that's a little more than I'd want to deal with! I was in Alaska this past Christmas with my cousins and I almost got stuck there without a flight back home! I learned how to appreciate not having to walk, drive on or deal with ice and snow. However, it was beautiful! Alaska is beautiful in all seasons! I love watching the both of you work and also seeing the love you share for one another! Can't wait til next week!

Again, another great vid. Sorry about your squirrel visitor though. That must’ve been a real pain to come home to. And Tanya, I empathise with your reluctance to walk over that snow heap! I would be equally cautious! 🤪 Who knows what lurks under there! Even Stella was careful. Looking forward to whatever you show us next. I think we enjoy your channel so much because it is so honest and unpretentious. We just love how real and non-influencery (is that even a word??😆) it is. You could start a line of backwoods aluminum cookware that looks like repurposed road signs. "Gun Creek Pots and Pans by Gale with T Cups by Tanya" 🍳🍲 ☕ Like I think I said once before, Gale has a stove for every occasion. In the 70's, these two Alaskan guys came to visit us on an isolated farm in the middle of winter. They bought an acre next door, and wanted to trade for marijuana. Well, these two men spent the next 3.5 weeks working from sun up to 9-10 PM building a shop - in mostly rain. We were completely flabbergasted at how much these folks could work. You need to realize that this was very rural Oregon where hard work was normal, but these guys were so on another level. Finally they finished, and traded their pick up for a pound of home grown and flew home after mailing said buds. One of the guys had glaucoma and pot was the only thing that would relieve the pain. I taught them how to make the shake into an oil, so he could just take a few drops a day. I do not know your name (the man), but you remind me of those guys. If you ever get a chance to view an Amish community building a barn, the men in the whole community had the same 'vibe'. They were born into it - frightfully skilled and used to labor from teen years. Your a beautiful couple who I am sure will bring a lot of beauty and goodness to those around you - locally and virtually.

Hey guys, I've been watching your channel for about a year now. While I live in South Africa, I absolutely adore Alaska, despite never having visited there. I spend hundreds of hours consuming various RU-vid channels, featuring in particular cabin building in the wilds of Alaska. I'd probably give up almost everything for the chance to live this for myself, but it is so far removed from my reality, that I'll have to settle for experiencing it through your eyes. Not a bad thing at all. From what I can see Gale, you're a master cabin builder. Also an absolute perfectionist like myself. Your recent cabin build a few months ago, and the attention to quality and detail, was just wonderful and especially satisfying to watch. I sure would love to have a bit of background. Are you in fact an ex construction guy? Special regards to you both, what a great team you make!

Wow! One of my favorite genres on RU-vid is the offgrid lifestyle channels. I've seen a lot of them and can honestly say that there's only One channel where they go and dig a building out from under 30 feet of snow and remodel it. Who does that? Barrel Stoves! Cook your front and freeze your back! Oh yeah, I remember them from the fifties and sixties. Somewhat of an improvement was the double barrel stove. The top barrel made a sort of plenum to heat more air. Most of the situations I remember with barrel stoves were in poorly insulated enclosures with lots of air flow. The old home cut board and batten siding without any sheathing (diagonal shiplap back then). The oil parlor heaters were a big improvement giving a more even heat. The barrel stoves were far from airtight so it was all or nothing. Then the seventies and airtight stoves were such a huge improvement!
