One thing about cougar paws that I love, and that is “the show“. Everything a professional has should be 100% above what a homeowner has in their closet or garage since a professional should be showing yourself as a professional. People always comment on my cougar paws and I’m happy to show them off. People always comment on my telescopic ladder and I’m happy to show it off. Pros should have “unique” equipment particular to your profession. IMO. Thanks.

I think safety and comfortability is more important than if my shoes look like worker boots or not haha. Clients care about maybe if your truck looks like crap or your tools are old as hell, maybe... but what matters is how you present your attitude, personality, and more than anything the level of precision in your work.

I've been Roofing 24 yrs, never owned a pair of Cougar Paws. My personal opinion, and mine only, little to much money. Also I think they should make them in a low top, or a mid shoe or boot. But personally I've found that any type of basketball, or skateboarding shoe are the best. Once again this is just my opinion. I think they are the best because the soles are flat, and when you step or walk on Roofs , every part of that sole is touching the roof so you dnt slip or slide off. Also I can go to the local Walmart and buy a pair of mid And 1 basketball shoes for around 15 bucks and can walk just about any roof with in reason. I am also only 5'8 -5'9. That also helps out a bit. Being a shorter guy. I have noticed depending on the pitch some taller guys have little more trouble. Good review though man. Dave Holcomb, my companies name is Gunz-N-Hozez Roofing. Let me no what ya think.

I started gutter cleaning a couple months ago, have been using cougar paws. Frankly I am shocked at the awful quality. The lacing rivets are rusted, one of the speed lace rivets disappeared, the yellow stitching (very important keeps boot to sole!) is already very frayed, and in a good rain storm they turn into ridiculous lead weights. I am shocked at the poor quality and left message with their customer service. This just after a couple months and didn't wear on 100% of roofs and I do 3 per day max. And now I soon have to buy $80 replacement pads. That said, I would rather have them on with steep pitch but damn do they need some upgrades! Especially for the money you spend!!!

Came here after getting up on my first customer’s roof with my team leader, the pitch was a 7 I believe he said and my shoes were slipping, the roof was over 100 degrees and I was 10 feet off the ground, I could have gotten seriously injured because of the shoes I was wearing but I didn’t know it made a difference. I ended up getting heat blisters on my hands from holding the hot roof to keep myself from sliding off and falling. LESSON LEARNED - NEVER GO ON A ROOF WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND PROPER ROOFING SHOES. Especially in Texas where roofs are probably 140 degrees.

Got to stick the the air force ones low tops. Have for the 15 years of roofing , they last forever an the harder heel is perfect for the 10x12s walkin no problem, no give in the sole but still comfortable on the feet an ankles . Also the lower profile/texture bottoms of soles are soft enough not to rake the shingles . Even when they wear down the grip improves more in my opinion an many others that ive come across is the roofing busines. Many jobs can be done in a pair of these for sure .

Cross fit shoes work good on new roofs but when you're walking on an older roofer (doing an estimate or about to rip) the loose granules make you slip everywhere...cougar paws work just as good on old roofs and they do new..they cost 180, BUT talk to your supplier, they will work with you...I bought 5 pairs for 500 plus tax...went in with some of my guys and we all got them for 100 bucks each...good buy I feel...either way, stay safe guys and great video, thank you !

@Hustle_n_motivate44
@Hustle_n_motivate44 2 года назад
I might even glue the cougar paw pad onto the bottom of my paws, is it just me but when I’m on a really steep roof the pad on my paws will start to come off if my feet are pointed straight down then if it comes completely off I start to slide because the bottom is just straight plastic . That’s the only thing I don’t like about my paws. I have to keep my feet sideways when going down a steep roof and I have a bummed ankle that starts hurting when I put too much pressure on it so I try to avoid using it too often

I've been roofing for twenty years now (what's wrong with me?). I found a low cut basketball shoe works best. They have the same style of sole as your CrossFit. Little groves for the granules to go into while providing great traction. However here in Canada, we require steel toes. We still wear sneakers, but at a risk of getting fined by inspectors. First of all if you want to do a test you should try a 10/12 pitch and why didn’t you include a skate shoe like DC or Airwalk? I’ve used cougar paws for over a decade and wear them on anything over 8/12 pitch. I must say with the cougar paws their original design is much more comfortable than their new design but, the new design looks much better but, we’re not wearing them for fashion, they’re for safety. I personally think cougar paws are the best option (with fresh pads) followed by a good skate shoe then maybe your Reebok cross trainers. I’d like to see this video re-done on a real 10/12 roof with the skate shoe added. Keep making videos

Good review, and I agree with your final decision. I’m a home inspector and I’ve done over 1500 inspections. I recommend and swear by cougar paws to everybody I know. One of the things that you don’t address in your video is the replacement pads. When you wear through the sole, you don’t have to buy new shoes. The replacement soles only cost $20-$30 at a roof supply store. Since the economic value is a big part of your video, I’m surprised you didn’t mention this. I’m on my third set of pads, and I would’ve easily burned through hundreds of dollars of sport shoes had I gone that route instead.
@grassybeaner654
@grassybeaner654 5 лет назад
The brand of the shoes dont matter I mean obviously it matters in quality and how long they are going to last you but as far as grip it's all about the sole of the shoe. Ive found that the softer and more spongier the sole the better. Nikes and Adidas have been coming out with great shoes for roofing lately. I own a pair of nikes a pair of Adidas and a pair of cougar paws. I haven't used the cougar paws in a while because I've found that the sneakers last me longer than the pads of the cougar paws. I'm a heave guy I'm about 240. And I would be lucky for a pair of cougar paws to last me 2 weeks where as the nikes and Adidas have been lasting me at least a month

The steel walkers by cougar paws are garbage. Im ordering some korkers that strap over your shoes. Ive heard they work well.

Cougar paws aren't good on wet shingles sometimes the bundles get water into, you know what I mean... And the rubber sole on nike airmax are kind do hard rubber that why are little slippery .... I rather used Timberland whitelegde or boots with Vibrant sole

I've been starting to use Vans, lol dont regret at all, doing 10/12 roof pitches and dont have a problem with them. So glad I got them.

just started climbing roofs this week and guy i work with wears lowtop vans, same pair i got at home. I've been wearing my normal caterpillar workboots, fine as long as the pitch is low but 2nd story ~9/12 pitch they're tearing up my ankles by the end of the day. Never would have guessed slick vans with no ankle support would be the better option but gonna try them and find out.

Magnetic won't do much for aluminum lol. I wear Nike's all day long on standing seam.

Try an Ironworkers Boot, they're literally made to be worn while walking on metal. I use them on shingle roofs as well, and they hug the surface pretty impressively.

why test on shingles? by the time your walking on shingles you've already done felt and have most likely done 1/2 the roof with shingles.. im worried about slipping on felt
@scottrhoads1500

I been roofing for 15 years now and felt still scares me. Not just slipping on it but walking on felt somebody else stapled to find out they didnt staple it that well and the whole row breaks loose lol. And walking on ice n water shield with all the loose granules on a 7 or better scares the hell out of me too lol

Go for synthetic paper. Felt sucks. Rips and you slide as you mentioned. Also it transmits waters through it it gets through the shingles and then causes slow damage to the wood.

I haven't touched felt except to remove it in years. Dead technology that needs to stick to what ever other uses they have for it.

Any recommendations out there for just metal roofs ???? No shingle , just metal roofs - steep ones at that.

Cougar paw also makes a newer version that has magnets in the soles. Think they are around 170$ They do work well but still not a substitute for also wearing a safety harness

What they need to do is make a version that it is a combo of the two. Clearly, the Cougar Paw foam works great, BUT there is no reason to have a raised heel (creates more pitch as you walk down the roof) and they are WAY too stiff. You want a flexible sole that gives you move feel for the roof as you walk it. Also, with a flexible sole as you are walking up the pitch, your forefoot can maintain better contact w/ the roof as your heel lifts off for each step. I'm going to buy Cougar Paw foam replacements, and then glue some heavy duty velcro to the bottom of some minimalist shoes (like Altras) and then velcro the Cougar Paw foam to the bottom. I think it will be the best of both worlds.

Any update? Might be an option to glue the cougar paw pads onto the korkers add on/buckle on piece, over a good sneaker

I think I'll keep Cougar paws for safety, but grab the other shoes for a work day and hopping on a roof quick...nice everyday work shoes. But you get your value with the paws because you can change out the bottom after they wear out.

chris omaga I’ve worked on lots of 8 and 10s with plenty of felt everywhere and even on tear offs and can say I feel much safer wearing them, I’ve been roofing since I was 13 and am now 18 and can say if you’re working on 8 and 10s and aren’t too confident, you should wear these
