You my friend are an honest contractor and know what you’re doing. That roof over was done beautifully! I am going to do the same at my house in a few weeks, I am lucky I have a small house in NYC, I just hope I find the right guy like you!
if the house has a solid structure, you can reshingle. Be aware that, after years of exposure, those singles are not as heavy as they used to be due to weather wear. I suspect a third of their original weight has been lost, so it´s perfectly fine to reshingle and have a second layer.
Hi Eric, we've been very busy this week - 13 home inspections. On the re-shingle, I understand your logic and if it were my roof I would want the shingles stripped off to find any underlying issues and have them repaired. But, everyone has a budget. ;-)
Good job AGAIN Eric. Nice attention to details. These negative comments on here are hilarious. Keep up the good work and educating people how to do roofs properly.
I Want Do a job unless I Replace All The Flashing with New Even if the Home Owner says Know because It Just a Good idea And You Know its Done right Love The videos Man !
I agree with your other details but this is how i have done problem free recovers since 1992. this only works though if the original roof is properly installed.
Bendiciones siga haciendo buen trabajo
Rehabbing a 1400 sq ft roof and reroofing HDZ over single tab was the wisest move-cash-wise and best practices. The county also has a two yr old code that replacing more than 2 decking boards requires a $800 permit. Another reason why so much exodus to rural parts of VA via potomac river bridge
Who gives a shit as longest there's no leaks great job New York aloud 3 layers No beam or roof problem after 3 u have to rip it all down to plywood . I do all my roofs like this never had any problem s . If I'm putting 35 year shingle the way your doing quess what they gonna get 35 years out of it . This is the right way to re shingles over old . This how I've been doing it past 18 years . I run into old shingles re roof jobs that I did 10 12 years ago when I'm driving around they still look great . Great job . Well explained for them that don't know make your money . Bad comments don't make u money . Do it this way you'll never have call back .
Good video. I have 2 existing layers of 3 tab roofs on my 2×6 rafter. 16" OC roof. My county allows 3 roof layers and Owens Corning will Standard Warranty the 3rd layer when installed per their spec. With the 2 existing layers I have over 17,000 nail WHOLES in the sheathing. Seems to me. And my roofer agrees..The new third layer of Architectural shingles when installed correctly is EXTRA protection.
If you put three layer on a 2x6 rafter then wait a few years and see if the ridge sags. Shit rafters will sag too. Hopefully those are very short rafters on a steep pitch. You should have asked a builder instead of a roofer. Most roofers want quick money with like work. Bet they wouldn't do that to their own house
If you do a tear off and reshingle you still have 17000 holes so what’s the difference? Unless you replace the decking. I’m still going to do a roof over on my house.
I LAUGH AT SOME OF THE COMMENTS, THIS SYSTEM IS PRACTICED AND ACCEPTED, ALTHOUGH YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS BUT IN 35 YEARS OR SO HAHAHA!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!!
the ICBO says that, you can install up to 2 layer of light weight shingles, or 2 layers of shingles over wood shingles, you can install up to 600 per square if you install light weight concrete tile, more than 600 lbs per 100 sq ft of roof you will need a structural engineering report
Hi Mr. Eric very good videos thanks for share your knowledge with us. Please if u can just tell us what length of nails are you using for second layer Thank you again
Damn tried to attach a pic didnt work . its called nesting . you trim the starter to fit in the first course . First shingle to fit under the second course. the rest of the way up you butt the top of you shigles to the bottom of each course this allows them to lay flat. if you roof over with underlayment you will get curling shingles and voids
Do you know if the roof sheeting and the roof trusses are designed to carry all the extra weight that you are adding on? I don't see where is the saving when you are doing everything is a complete tear off!!!
Hey Eric, I'm going over existing 3 tab shingles that are still in fairly good shape. I'm going to use architectural shingles but will use a cheap synthetic underlayment and replace any metal edging that is in need etc. Is it normal for architectural shingles to have a different cut pattern? The square cutouts on the bottom are 7" 5 1/4" and 4" on each shingle but are offset and make several different patterns. If this is a silly question sorry bout that but it just made me wonder as I have only used 3 tab shingles up to this point. Thanks for a reply
They are made like that because you supposed to get a dimensional look wen installed. on 3 tabs you see a pattern , 30 years you see a dimensional look like a 3D look if you see it on angles. it's a normal thing sir. good luck . Eric.
+Laura Ward ...Hi Laura! how's work ...answering your question ...Some people think by having 2 layers of roof is better than 1 single layer . They think if water goes thru the first layer ...there is a second layer underneath . Others think on the saving cost of the removal . My personal opinion is this: Is better to remove the old roof and replace any damaged, termite, dry rot ..etc...wood and install a brand new roof system over the wood. Shingles roofs are a simple installation ...if you know how to do it properly , the roof will last the expected life of the manufacturer. The hardest roofs are the flat roofs ,metal roofs, then the tile roof and last come shingles. That's my personal opinion Thank you Eric.
Hey Eric. What kind of trailer do you use to haul off the old shingles? How do you get the shingles up to the roof? Do you use a laddervator? What brand? I would really like to see what equipment you use on a daily basis and talk about how reliable it is or is not.
hi eric. what do you rec for roofing shoes for a 8 pitch asphalt shingles? what do your guys use? looking at buying a pair of cougar paws. what do you think?
I like how you said fascia instead of facial. So few guys even know they're saying it wrong. Good money job to replace all exposed metal, especially including pipe caps, or that wouldn't be happening. Excellent job to video, because there was enough money in it to do it really all the way. I don't really like drying in over a nailover roof, but you were using arc that hide so much flaws and you were also using fabric instead of paper. I live in Va Beach, VA, where roof work is really easy. Nothing special whatsoever, but I know the requirements both up north and further south along the oceanfront. I like how ya got 19k subscribers. I'm about to subscribe just to see how you're doing so well.
cheapshedkits ....LOL nothing special brotha! I'm just another roofer, I was trained to do roofs since the age of 18 , by doing these videos hope i dont offend anyone with different ideas, again thanks for watching roofer! Eric Garcia
I like how you commented so quickly. That's like determination with an agenda, or it just timed out right. And I'm not really a roofer anymore, I build sheds. I actually have a link to all the jobs I've done since 09 on my own roofing video that I just put in there for some jerk that was trash talking since last night. Once I show a link to all those jobs I typically do alone since 2009, It becomes hard to trash talk. It's like compare then. I'm about to learn a little more of getting ppl to subscribe off watching how you do your videos. Have a good night, cuz.
when I went to roofing school they taught me to separate the different layers by installing them like it was the first layer , so to me it doesn't matter if it has 2 or more layers , I would install underlayment in order for me to get the manufacturer's warranty.
+Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia ok learn something new because i do a this tear off and some i mean majority they dont have underlayment it rare but gracias to answer my question love your videos bro
it more strong it the same as old felt one felt covers 2 sq ft so for example this new felt cover 10 sq ft one roll so old felt u need to buy 5 rolls to cover 10 sq ft do the math it almost the same price
I am fixing to do this to my house. Just curious about a couple things. Do I need to remove the first layer of the old shingles and do I put my drip edge on first before new felt paper or shingles. Thanks ahead of time.
I try to stay away from layovers but if it's a friend who has a limited bank account I replace the same things you do but I also remove old hip and ridge caps
at least u all dont need ropes and harnesses at all times now.. even with toe boards on.. dang it.. haha i work for a roofing company and as of i think october 1st 2017 we have to be tied off all the time...
Is a good idea to do it that way but it depends of home owners, but the point of reroof is to save many, going this way taking every thing out takes a little time and if I going to be doing that I better tell the home owner take the all roof out just for a couple thousand dollars more,un less I pay cheap for my guys
+Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia whats the name of your company and lic # and a contact number . i get property management companies from OC that ask me if i know lic roofers that can take care of their leak calls in that area
why would you go over an old shingle, the new shingles after a year or two will be as bumpy as the first one. and Mr Garcia when you do that you do not have a warranty on the new material. if you don't believe me call your manufacturer or read the fine print on the packaging
Material warranty’s are trash and don’t matter. The only warranty that matters is the warranty that the roofer provides.... lifetime warranty and 30 year warranty ect are a bunch of gimmicks by Gaf, certaintied ect...
it's good to know that someone just came out with a new roofing code, according to your ICBO code, what is the maximum weight permitted per square foot? so , should we go back and remove all the standard weight tiles from homes, standad weigh tiles weight 10 Lbs per square foot, light weight tiles weight 5.9 lbs per square foot
Nice video Just waiting for everyone to call me a jackass It's the same thing with communications work always somebody to tell you how f***** up you are and how stupid you are for doing something even though it works
i think you haven't read the ICBO for roofing installation sir, we can talk about roofs me and you, because you wouldn't understand, but i deal with inspectors at least 5 days a week for the last 13 yrs, i deal with engineers and architects also, this is the first time i hear that 2 layers are not permitted on a standard structure, I guess i haven't learned that code, but i'm willing to read it and apply , thank you
This is definitely ok to do but it only takes a crew a hour to remove a shingle roof. And 300 bucks for a dumpster. Shingles will last longer by removing them. 😊
