I definitely agree, however it’s quite the problem to remove them once they are installed to conduct a repair. It’s unfortunate but I’m constantly repairing areas that where improperly completed by the original contractor and I’m constantly struggling to remove them without causing any damage.
@roofingtips
@roofingtips 5 лет назад
Mark St-Onge The double sealant strip does make repairs more difficult, but I think it really just shows how well the double sealant strip works!! I recommend you get a good paint scraper or pry bar to break the seals before removing.
@markst-onge9726
@markst-onge9726 5 лет назад
Restoration Roofing, Definitely agree, the double sealant maintain a better seal. I’ve always used a nice sharp pry bar and occasionally I will cool them down with a garden hose when possible, but that’s not always the case. As for struggling, well I meant more time consuming. Anyhow, I definitely enjoy your videos. Keep up with the good work.

I wonder how relevant some of this is going to be going forward. It's 2022 and the cost of getting anyone to work has went up a lot. It's the majority of the bid. I'm thinking the market for the thicker heavier stuff like the malarkey legacy or landmark pro is going to be where it's at moving forward. Sure it's a little more money but even a timberline is 115 a square now. That legacy is a Scotchgard shingle, much thicker and heavier. 275 lb per versus 205. All for $45 a square more. On a 22 square house that's like a thousand bucks in materials but with the cost of Labor, even if you make 50% margin on the shingles that's a $1,500 upgrade but you get a hell of a lot more when it comes to lifespan and resiliency

That’s because he’s bitter that you didn’t pick him! I’d pick landmark personally. I made this video years ago and we only install atlas now, but I’d pick landmark over hdz

For one of the cheapest options available asphalt shingles are a good go to. The best shingle for your roof really depends on the environment the shingles are being installed in. High wind areas owens corning and iko because they have a reinforced nail zone. For mild climates just about any brand. For hail prone areas class 4 hail rated shingle. Etc.. one of the oldest asphalt shingle roofs ive ever seen was an old 3 tab roof. 40yrs old. I dont like any asphalt shingle brand that has a warranty that claims 50yrs. In our area thats just a false claim. They dont last that long period. If you want a cheap roof go with an asphalt shingle. Best bang for buck for longevity go with f-wave or euroshield. And of course you have metal roofs, the most expensive. Another reason i dont like asphalt shingles is that only apx 2% are recycled, the rest ends up in landfills. Great video.

I liked the Owens 3 tab shingles because they lasted 30 years. I just found a leak in my roof last week in the porch area. However, now I am hoping to find a shingle that will last for 40 years. I'm 64 years old and hope to shingle it one more time.

Certainteed Landmark and Landmark Pro are the best shingles . Certainteed Four Star Warranty gives you 50 years of non-prorated coverage that includes Material Labor Tear Off and Disposal. I have seen a lot of issues with Atlas shingles. I think Owens Corning shingles duration the quality has come along way and I would rank them second. Definitely stay away from GAF Timberline and Tamko Heritage shingles.

Thank you for this video, I live in Canada and I have to do my roof again after 18 years. The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. I have contacted IKO and they are offering me the warranty reimbursement. My question is what is the normal lifespan for the shingles in general?
@roofingtips
@roofingtips 3 года назад
undecided were they 3 tab shingles? If so, then that’s pretty good! Down here in Memphis, we see 30-year architectural shingles coming to the end of their lives after only 15-18 years.... But we have very hot summers and cold winters with the occasional ice storm. What part of canada are you in??

@@roofingtips Thank you very much for you prompt reply!!! I am in Toronto. One contractor told me this "I would not put them in a shed let alone in a house. I can not associate myself with a company that cheats by making a very inferior product. I would suggest to just not take their “deal” and install something else, either Certainteed shingles or GAF. Certainteed gave me 2 class 4 roofs that are terribly defective. In my 40 yr career these 2 roofs are the mostseriouslydefectiveive come across and certainteed won’t even discuss it with me. I callwarrantydept and of all things they are not allowed to give me their name. I have been their customer for 40 yrs and I’m a good quality customer. I pay my bill, I rarely complain. With certainteed it’s not any one employee w bad attitude, it is the company and how as a whole they are required to treat customers.

Certainteed by spec say you only need 4 nails to honor warranty. On steep roofs they require 6nails which steep for them is above 21/12 pitch. When you put 6 nails on the shingle and is a lower pitch than 21/12 they call that storm nailing. The four nails they still rate to take up to 130 mph winds.

And many guns on the market aren't adjustable setting nails too deep or too high. Now add in the Dimensional shingle and everyone thinks they're roofers. KIND OF LIKE YOU.
