James reviews the Roofus square carpentry tool, a game-changing product for carpentry, steel fabrication and roof construction. The movable ruler can be positioned at any angle, allowing for vertical and horizontal levelling.
Roofus Pro offers a little more precision, plus a very robust and durable feel. If you are a cabinet maker or kitchen installer, Roofus Pro is the best choice for you. Great for the roofer and sits on your tool belt nicely weighing only 350 grams.

The concept is excellent and would save a lot of time. The problem I see with the tool is the shortness of the stock against the timber. No timber is straight and any curve or bump is going to throw your angle off. At least with a traditional square you're ironing most of that problem out.
@patrickmoore7085
@patrickmoore7085 2 месяца назад
If you’re marking angles the pivot point on the square covers about 1mm where as even at angles this square still has the full stock of the square. So it only counts for square cuts not for any angle at all

The lever used for locking obviously works on a cam. This may wear and slip with use, so compared with the speed square which has no moving parts, I think I'd keep the latter.
@roofustools9914
@roofustools9914 4 года назад
Hello, the Roofus blade lock is made of through hardened stainless steel parts. It's not a cam, its a simple bolt and thread that is extremely low wearing and smooth to operate. The square lock pin and thumb screw are also through hard stainless steel, it's all built to last. The handle can even be adjusted if over time its tight position needs moving back 5 degrees. Hope that is helpful.

There is a massive disconnect in this attempt to suppress the spread of this illness, all of the people who have not got it are no threat or risk to anyone!, as long as we each reduce our contact with other people to limit infection and self-isolate for a couple of weeks if we have reason to think we have had contact with anyone with ANY respiratory infection, until all symptoms have either not appeared or passed. Our government is desperately trying to suppress this illness altogether because the Health Service had very small capacity to deal with any additional workload and for it to fail completely and be so overwhelmed that people who could recover can't get the treatment they deserve would be tragic, the choices that doctors and clinical staff would have to make as to who gets what they are already having to make all the time, they are already working beyond capacity and have been doing so for the last two years!, about one thousand four hundred people die each day in England and Wales, a large proportion of them in one of our Hospitals and a significant number of them finally succumb to a respiratory infection. So while I'm sure that our best strategy would be to isolate all the most vulnerable and also all of their contacts and carers while the rest of us get it, suffer a bit then recover them are immune then cannot pass it on to anyone and its over, our government has decided not to go that way, we are in utterly unknown territory and within in a year or so when most of the dust has settled we can try to pick up the pieces. I am going to stay at home for as long as I can, I shall try to be a Human Be-ing, not so much a Human Do-ing!, Cheers, Richard.

I had this sent to me in its earlier stages at crowd funding. Got the professional version which is just better quality. Dialogued with inventor for about a year. So in some place to comment with a degree of experience. 30 year a chippy so he I go. Simply put its a cracking tool and well worth the money. Stanley used to sell a 10 inch version of their smaller quick square that you can’t get anymore. It has a much simpler adjustable arm imo. If you just put a pencil mark on it to show your height above plate mark then rub of when done it essentially does the same thing. The tft model does have increments for 1/3 depth. It doesn’t have vials on it but nothing that can’t be sorted. Just take a small boat square up draw horizontal line on rafter and job done. But you can buy a better version of the old Stanley 10 inch from a company called Timber frame Tools or tft. In my opinion it’s a matter of styles I prefer the big square with an adjustable arm to the more fiddly roofus. On the big square you don’t turn it over to find hip cuts you just move arm normally less than inch SIMPLES. It’s just my opinion but there was some inaccuracies in the description of use in this video. If you persevere with the roofus you will master it but it could be more confusing to an apprentice.
@RobNorman08
@RobNorman08 4 года назад
You can still get the Stanley quick square on eBay but its imperial, I purchased a metric version years ago made by Blundell Harling which you can't get anymore, however I've now found the metric version in anodised black aluminium with laser etched numbers from kingsviewoptics.com (the new one is about 400mm long so great size for bigger roofs) Top quality product little pricey but well worth the money with how simple it makes cutting a roof in.

@roofustools9914
@roofustools9914 4 года назад
The Roofus doesn't move like a bevel denty32! The Roofus locks very firmly and is incomparable to a sliding bevel. You can set a roofus to pitch and throw it to a work colleague off the Roof and it won't move position. It locks so much firmer than any sliding bevel available. If you want to keep using the famous speed square from 1925 and set it to pitch with your eyes for every cut you mark, you are very welcome 🙂 🤙🏼

Speed square works fine for framing ,I moved to the states 22 years ago from Ireland and had to re learn a lot of carpentry to some degree because over here we'll frame the whole house with lumber.Speed square does everything that thing does and for all the non trades people watching building channels on RU-vid, there are absolutely standards and tolerances when you're framing but at the same time we're not building pianos, it kind of reminds me of when you see guys turn up on jobs with stiletto brand hammers ( $200 hammer ) it doesn't do anything a $30 estwing hammer won't do.not trying to slag the guy off at all but there's a lot of moving parts and screws on that thing and I don't know how true that would still be after 5 or 6 years on a construction site.

@SkillBuilder

That is not going to tell you the angle of the pitch. The crtical thing here was to get the roof in under the windows and still meet the minimum for the Stonewold tiles. You need to know the number. Even one degree under and the building inspector would tell you to take them off.

@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 4 года назад
The height above plate is governed by the common rafters and that HAP then determines where the seat cut comes in on the hip. You can raise the hip to put more meat on that birdsmouth but you then need a batten run in on each side to pick up the roof battens. In the end the thing that matters most is whether there is enough strength left in the rafter and as building control insisted on a double hip rafter there is plenty of strength there.

This is by no means a new idea at all, by far the best roofing tool for cutting a roof is the Metric Roofmaster square, Blundell Harling used to produce it, but now the only place it can be found is from a company called Kingsview Optical. The only information you need to cut all aspects (rafters, hips/valley, jacks, purlins, layboards etc) is the pitch of the roof. The tool consists of 45 degree set square with a sliding arm, on the side are printed the degrees for commons, hips etc, and table giving run and rise per meter, once you have set the pitch you just read the numbers to give calculations for rafter, hip, jacks lengths etc, you then use the square set to the correct pitch to mark all your plumb and seat cuts, much the same as Robin does with the roofing square, absolutely amazing bit of kit, Every bit of information needed for cutting a roof is all there on the square, I urge all chippies to have a look, It's worth its weight in gold...

Looks like it fairly p!$$ed it down after you bedded that wall plate. Months of torrential rain and now its fined up "corona lock down". Oh to be a self employed builder

You are right. It did rain and rain and there came a point where you just had to do it.

Hi there, yet another brilliant video on carpentry, but I couldn't help seeing that you are setting that roof far too high under the window!, see 8 minutes 50 onwards, not an uncommon mistake, one which I had to try to deal with many times during my career as a roofer!. The root of the problem relates to the installation of the cover flashing under the window, the flashing has to be fitted into the joint in the brickwork below the cill, the gap just under the cill will not be secure!, Furthermore the flashing should be at least 75 mm vertical below the chase and then has to go over the roof covering which if it is slate will be two times the thickness of slate plus the thickness of the battens multiplied by the roof angle(pitch) factor!this will amount to somewhere around 50mm, much more if a thick concrete roof tile is applied, the 75mm clearance is to the highest point on the the roof except where it has to be just above the roof hip fitting!, also with any plain tile which will be similar to slate. As at 8minutes 50 it appears there is more or less one whole course of brick under the window cill, , one course below that, of about 60mm, the chase plus 75mm, plus the roof covering, which appears to be a plain tile, about 30mm, although not recommended at pitches below 30 degrees!, with batten, say another 30 mm, all adds up to a total of 195mm from the head of the rafters to the underneath of the cill. That is more than eight inches in old money and you can maybe image just how shocked I was when I discovered this of course the hard way because I was sent to fix roof tiles and flashings to extension structures that had been designed and built wrong!. A perfect example of the way in which the construction industry has lost it's way with sub-contractors unable to communicate with each other and builders who don't have to have any management skills!, just get it done big and quick and cheap!. I have posted this to you because like many of the tradesmen wlth whom I have had the pleasure to work over the years you seem to really care about what you are doing and take a pride in how you do it! .Oh and I just love the gadget, I wish I could have been a chippy!!. Cheers, Richard.

Neat but looks fiddly. Cant see it lasting long too many moving parts adds increases tolerances over time. Zero moving parts on a speed square.
