ROOKS NEST REMOVAL
After several assignments with the removal of rook nests I have made these experiences!
ROOKS IN THE CITY
It is not known for sure why rooks are moving into the cities. It may be due to a lower incidence of natural enemies or that it has become easier for them to find food/insects in the cities than in sprayed agricultural areas.
One thing is certain! The noise can be very annoying in a residential area.
THE ASSIGNMENT IS DIVIDED INTO 3 STEPS
1. Permit
2. Removal
3. Scare campaign
ROOKS ARE A COLONIAL BIRD...
...and it’s protected by "The Birds Directive" and it requires a permit to remove the nests and to launch a scare campaign.
PERMIT
Make sure that the owner of the trees has got a permit before you do anything at all.
(The permission is often achieved where people get disturbed during the daytime hours, such as hospital, nursing home, kindergarten or school)
Without a permit, you may inspect tasks that can never be done.
TELESCOPIC POLE
Extend your reach to neighboring trees by using a telescopic pole (for window cleaning). In order to provide sufficient effect on the nest the pole is provided with a plate at the end. If the plate is too small it goes through the nest and is it too big it can not get between the branches.
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CLIMBS NEEDED
Before you make your ascent, place the rope bag under a possible anchor point. Reduce the telescopic pole to 3/4 length and use it to measure which nests are within reach.
ASCENT
1. Install the rope in the tree
2. Attach the telescopic pole to the rope below the climbing system
3. If there are many ascents in a day then optimize your performance by using foot, knee and hand ascender
4. When you are positioned in the tree, hoist the telescopic pole
LESS HEIGHT MAY BE BETTER
Rooks build their nests from fresh material in between branches and when it drys out the construction becomes very strong. It’s easy to push the nest upwards and more difficult sideways. Therefore, it’s an advantage to remain below the nest, within reach of the telescope pole. When you are placed just below the nest, use
visor, close your mouth and avoid the ”cake”!
ERGONOMICS
An extended telescopic pole can be difficult to control. For better ergonomics use branch forks etc. to support the telescopic pole.
SCARE CAMPAIGN
Nesting rooks are impossible to scare. But if the nests been removed before breeding season, they have to build new nests and during this period they are much easier to scare. The scare campaign is carried out repeatedly during the daytime hours for 5 to 10 days, by making sudden noise when the birds approach the trees. A concentrated campaign gives a quick result. If the customer can not complete a proper scare campaign it’s futile to remove any nests at all!

Engaging, entertaining, and effective style of your videos, sir. I'll bet handling that pole at reach is somewhat more physically taxing than it might look!

Thanks Robert! Yes, and it can drive you insane when the pole tip don't want to do as you think it should do. Fortunately, no one can hear when you curse it!!! Stay safe!

I have had to do this as well but I never thought of recommending a scare campaign afterwords, good idea.

Cool video. Are these birds aggressive? Have you ever been attacked doing this?
@SorenSatellit
@SorenSatellit 6 лет назад
Thanks BigLeaf Tree Service! Most nests are removed outside the breeding season (before the birds return to the nests), because it's where you may get the permission. Occasionally I have also removed nests after the official breeding season has started. It has happened if the winter has been longer than usual and the birds have not yet started to breed ....but they stay around the nests and quickly disappear as soon as there are activity in the trees. They are very shy and never aggressive. They stay on distance all day and often only return when I've moved away from the area. Stay safe!

Hi Sandy! Here in Denmark, the authorities have become much more generous in issuing licences, perhaps because more and more people are bothered by their nesting in the cities. It seems as if their decision is already made at the question "is the rooks population in danger?" which it obviously isn't! Here it helps if many citizens join forces - if there is a hospital/nursery/nursing home/hotel or similar where people rest during the day, who also feel disturbed .... or if the birds' shit pose a health risk to those who stay/play under the trees. When it comes to health, I have experienced that the authority's medical officer overrules all other decisions. If nothing else helps and the trees are not subject to any other restrictions, a licence is not required if the owner choose to fell the trees or prunes the trees during the period when there are no birds in the nests. In other words, you are not allowed to push nests down at any time without a permit, but outside the breeding season you are allowed to fell trees with rooks' nests or cut off the branch where the nest is. Yes, it seems very stupid but you are not allowed to touch colonial nests. I hope you find a solution!

What's the point
@SorenSatellit
@SorenSatellit 2 месяца назад
Thanks user-oi6bq8wy4w The typical reasons are to avoid: 1. Noise nuisance: Rooks can be very noisy. This can be a major nuisance for people living or working close to the rooks' nesting sites. Especially places where people have to rest/sleep during the daytime (for example: nurseries and hospitals) 2. Contamination by droppings (For example: Playground, parking lot) 3. Ecological balance: In some cases it may be necessary to control the rat population to protect other animal species and maintain the ecological balance in a certain area.

Got to get rid of a magpie nest, horrific noise they make & as we all know they destroy all the blackbirds, blue tits nests, chicks😂Nailed 2 pieces of wood together = 20 ft and im going to have to get a ladder to get the job done. Whatever it takes to get rid of these cretins💥

Poor rooks!!! This is NOT ethically correct
@SorenSatellit
@SorenSatellit 3 года назад
Thanks Henric da Vinci! But that's not what kills them! Unfortunately, this problem is growing. Usually, rooks live in a forest outside the countryside. But pesticides in modern agriculture have become so effective/unethical that there is no food for the animals that natural live there. In other words, rooks can more easily find food on a football field or in a trash can than find food in the countryside. And when their normal enemies do not move into the city to the same degree, the population becomes unnaturally large until the colony is reduced due to disease. It is overproduction in agriculture that is not ethically correct. It is unethical to produce 8 kilos of grain to get 1 kilo of meat/human food!!!!!!!
