@@hooraylizardshit3821 It depends on the captain hook you have. The th100 captain hook is 18kn (not life support) but the th200 is rated for 23kn. That being said it should still be a secondary line and NEVER a primary line.

@@jacejohnson6120 Being dangerous is unprofessional I guess, great setup though. Huge traverse with the hook directly on the supporting branch. Safest use is hook over a branch then hooked on a suitable lower branch so it's being pulled upwards. Also the camp gyro looks like it could be snapped so easy but that's irrelevant

@geekay4703 4 года назад
I'm thinking if you would put a strong tube like rod over your line between the rollclip and biner on your harness you could essentially pull with one hand the hook line as it would push your progress capture for you to free your other hand to give line off your tie in rope. This way you could make more of a straight line instead of a big checkmark path.

What is the progress capture/3 in 1 device you use with the hook? I'm an arborist by trade and was considering the hook and figured the only thing lacking was a progress capture, but never considered an MA to go along with it. Nice work.

I climb with a very similar method. I feel having the ascender above the friction hitch defeats the safety of the hitch as it the ascender were to not catch, it would slip down, break your hitch and send you into an uncontrollable fall.
@CaliforniaTravelVideos
@CaliforniaTravelVideos 2 года назад
Granted @Kiva Swander - having a hand ascender above your friction hitch is not for amateurs. That said, you'll find a few world class competitive climbers like Richard Hattier use this technique: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2BoTqK1D5Zo.html And this guy knows his stuff!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UHmECsiXHGQ.html

Another rope for three tie in points would have been cool. You could have been floating triangulated in between the trees without being in line with any two of the trees you were climbing on.

@@AerialTraveler even without the foot/knee ascender, one could just use a utility line with a bowline for a footloop with a Blake's Hitch on the climbing line or clipped into a VT hitch on the climbing line. Then just tend whichever hitch you choose with the hand while the legs do the pulling. Thoughts?

Wow! I really like your climbing style and techniques. I've recently started climbing SRT after climbing DdRT and I'm lovin it. I watched this video over and over to understand everything you are doing with the multiple ropes because am trying to learn a similar approach. Let me see if I have this right...would greatly appreciate any corrections. So you ascend first on SRT. You are also hauling up with you a DdRT setup that is attached to your harness with the extra rope hanging down to the ground. Question, is this the tail end of your main climbing SRT climbing line, or is it a second rope? Additionally, you are hauling up a coiled orange rope that you will use later for the hook traverse. In addition to all that, you also have your landyard for tying in between moves. So all that made sense so far. One thing I didn't understand is when you started your first traverse with the hook, did you stay on your Ddrt on the right side, or did you move back to your SRT setup so that you could use your Ddrt setup again for the second traverse. Couldn't get that part. At the start of your second traverse, you come off of your landyard, and are on your green rope again. Is that still your Ddrt that you pulled back and reused at the second point, or did you somehow recover your SRT TIP to use again. Thanks for any clarification you can provide. Great YT channel by the way...subscribed.

Super freakin awesome. Thanks a million for the detailed explanation. Really love the technique. I have yet to utilize the other end of my main climbing line, but it makes so much sense to use it. I'm going out to practice this as soon as my hook comes in. I ordered the Captain Hook yesterday. Treestuff has a 21% sale right now on all DMM gear. Aside from the hook at the moment, I have all the gear I need to duplicate your method. Thanks again man. I will check out your gear video next.

Deep irony with any traditional arborist whining about too much gear, when all of modern arborist climbing (everything beyond the 1960s) is based around rope ascending and before that they depended almost entirely on spurs. You can climb trees "free" , with no gear at all, just like how rock climbers do it. But I've never seen or heard of an arborist ever doing that, why? Because it's akin to a Flintstones car when you can have automotion. Also a hook is as primitive as it gets when it comes to gear, hooks pre dated even rope.
