I'm so afraid to measure my speaker's response in my room. Once I start seeing Nulls, that will just open up a deep rabbit hole I don't want to go into. 1. Purchase Minidsp Dirac EQ. 2. Buy panels. 3. Move the subs around. 4. Fight with the Wife. 5. Fight with the Wife. 6. Fight with the Wife. 7. Return everything I purchased. 8. Blame Youthman.

That is the problem with some of this stuff. There is the possibility it will show you problems you never knew you had. And possibly some you simply can't fix because of room limitations. Maybe you don't own the home or your other half won't let do what you want in that particular room. When you didn't know you had the problems you thought it sounded it great. When you see them on a graph suddenly you can hear them and now you are not happy with your system lol. Or in some cases you spend day measuring and correcting problems only to find out you actually liked the way it sounded before! Or you can't percieve the difference and it still sounds the same to you. Oh the horror. Sound is a funny thing. Maybe you like a lot of bass, maybe you don't. Maybe your ears are jacked from years of factory work and rock concerts. Your ears and brain don't hear like a microphone.

Great video as usually! I run 2 R115SW and had a very big null. I can't remember at which frekvency, all I did was to turn one of my subs 45° and changed the delay and it was completely gone. I couldn't place it anywhere else becauce it's in my livingroom. You can really work some magic with REW and a DSP.
@MrJgibo1
@MrJgibo1 5 лет назад
Your Null is almost 85 DB. Suggest you do a test tone at that frequency and see if you can hear it at the same volume. If you can hear if ok you can then try reducing the other frequencies down a bit to match the null a bit better. Then you can adjust your volume accordingly. Good video as usual:)

Most people have pretty sensitive hearing around 40-50 hertz. I am willing to bet you won't be able to percieve that dip when actually listening to music or a movie. I would personally rather have a dip there then a peak.

Youthman, thank you. I got my Umik today and I already ran into issues. The result I was getting when measured seemed off. After re-watching this video, I learned that I choose to incorrect calibration file. I should have used the 90-degree file.

Great and informative video. Seems like this goes to using more subs in different positions seems to balance out the nulls and peaks of a room that a lot of testers seem to find. The AudioKinesis Swarm subwoofer system is based on theories/ideas from Earl Geddes and Floyd Toole. By using 4 subwoofers appropriately positioned subs, the system is supposedly able to substantially smooth out the peaks and valleys almost eliminating the sound signature of the room and leaving smooth bass. I haven't heard this system but just from me doing the old fashioned room crawl for one of my subs, and then placing the second one in the best sounding position on the back side of the room with both playing, the bass was much better then what I could get with only one sub. Was looking at adding a third (Sunfire) sub but now with you testing the 115r's, am holding off till you complete the series of videos on these puppies. So far I like what you've been saying on them. Love the SVS's but they are just a bit out of the budget. My wife just shakes her head....

Very informative video on a subject I think many might not usually consider when placing thier subs. As you say, placement might be mostly dependent on what's convenient. I remember when I first got into hometheater and I would hear subs in the store and think wow... Then when I got it home they would sound less as impressive. The placement makes the world of difference in most cases. This is just another testament as to why dual subs are always going to be the better option.

Might be a good idea to concentrate on those tone areas with some 30 -40 htz tones to see if its a fault in your subs not the room. Use your reciever to balance out the subs if its a modern one i will have a equaliser setup in the menu of your reciever somewhere helps greatly .

You say DSP can't fix the null, but have you tried corner bass traps? That might help with the null. At any rate, every room will benefit from bass traps, unless the room itself has been built to specific dimensions (like a high recording studio for example).
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
I actually had two corner bass traps stacked for 10 years. Recently I ran REW to measure with them and without and there was no change in the results.
@pierreye3322
@pierreye3322 5 лет назад
The null that you have when running both sub could be cause by the phase of both sub due to the unequal distance. Try adjust the delay one of the sub and see if that improve the freq response.
@Youthman

Thanks Pierre. I did try that and it made it worse. The R-115SW do not have a variable phase, only a 0 and 180 toggle switch

On the upside you already have the mic and software. One thing you can do is make a grid of your rooom, or mark every place you could put the subwoofers. Then measure in those spots with the sub placed where you sit. Find the spots where you get the best response and then place the subs there. You could also mess with the cross over points and phase swtiches too and see if that helps. Audioholics used the mini dsp unit and they really liked it as well.

@DevonCorcoranVlogs
@DevonCorcoranVlogs 5 лет назад
Having the subs in two different locations in the room will cause wave interference, or comb filtering. This will cause man peaks and nulls in different places in the room at different frequencies. I’m guessing the subs are placed 12-15 feet away from one another? Where the distance difference between the sources equals an odd multiple of a half-wavelength, the sound will cancel and you will hear no bass. It is difficult for humans to locate the source of bass frequencies and subwoofers are essentially omnidirectional on their own, so it is often best to place both of them together in the location best suited for the room. Now, placing subwoofers together begins to get into the realm of subwoofer arrays and a whole lot of audio theory that is neither necessary nor practical for a home theater, but it does solve some of the phase issues shown by the measured response curve! Keep the videos coming! Cheers.
@Youthman

Question, what room size needed to support either a 2,3 or 4 for 12 inch subwoofer
@Ibhenriksen
@Ibhenriksen 3 года назад
Saying that that location will cause boominess 4:49 is misleading and wrong information. It's a lot more complicated than that. It's not as simple and B&W as it looks. It's not boominess, and you could make the sub sound worse in different placements.

I have four identical subwoofers. I placed them right next to each other and filmed them in slow motion to watch them move. All were set to the identical phase which is variable from 0 to 180. Despite identical settings of phase for the subwoofers they were moving in and out at different times. I never would have known had I not filmed them. Any suggestions on fixing this?
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 лет назад
The problem isn’t with your subs it’s the frame rate of your camera. When I film my subs moving, the frame rate of the camera causes the driver to look like they are warping when in reality they are not.
@tkcdac
@tkcdac 5 лет назад
I have always wondered how phase impacts a room on two competing subs. Would you mind setting the phase on one at 180 (or other setting) to see if it had anything to do with the null at 35-45? That null isn't present in your room unless both are up. Perhaps that is simply a colliding wave that is present when the two frequencies hit? It would be interesting to see how phase changes these frequency interactions.

@@Youthman I'm enjoying these REW videos. Yes, I think some fine tuning of the phase might eliminate that null. If they were in phase, I would expect them to sum and help fix that null. Instead there seemed to be a bit of cancellation occurring. I don't the 180 degree phase switch would do it because that might be too drastic. I'm curious what Audyssey would do to this. Does Audyssey on the Marantz SR8013 EQ each sub separately or as one unit? Last thing is that the way the graph is zoomed in, makes that null look way worse than it is. It's 6dB, so it isn't good, but it's fixable.

@@Youthman You're zoomed in just right. I'm just saying visually, it looks worse than it is. Setting the delays could help possibly. That MiniDSP will really don't trick. From my understanding, Audyssey on most receivers just sets the levels and delays for each sub, but it sets the EQ for both as a single unit.

You can't always fallow microphone test and graphs this devices hear things most human ears wont hear so i always tell people use your ears or friends ears to adjust your bass . You will know when its boomy or when theres no bass. And another thing its very important to prevent room out of phase bass cancelation you can get when using multiple subs in front and rear of the room, your fronts subs need to be set 180 degrees and rears 0 degrees to prevent bass cancelations.
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 года назад
Although that sounds like it would be good advice, it’s not. I realize not everything that can be measured can be heard. But frequencies from 20 Hz to 100 Hz can absolutely be heard with our ears but can best be adjusted when you can see those measurements. So if I were to ask you in your room what frequencies would you need to adjust that are Bhumi could you tell me? Could you know what frequencies to cut using EQ to flatten your response? You can’t without taking measurements. Otherwise, you would be guessing.
@hildareveron6858
@hildareveron6858 2 года назад
@@Youthman your forgetting that best guest its what we got to work with as none of us have the perfect room to begin with. You can measure all you want but at the end room acoustics are going to interfere with your frequencies adjustments and you will not hear it as the mesurements are telling you. So why complicate yourself with all this frequencies bouncing everywhere at the speed of light creating all kinds of nulls, highs ,lows, ect. I have been installing profecional theater for years now and learn to trust my ears. Get 2 or more subs to get even well distribute bass and dont go overkill within your room size , so the 20hz bass long waves can be well distributed withing your space. When you start using overkill subs with too much amplification you run into harmonic acoustics issues withing that space. So i tell everyone if you have 2 or 4 12 inch subs and the gains are less than half and the bass is good and low and your not able to pinpoiny where your subs are your good and there is no need to be going to 18 inch subs with massive amplifications in that specific room. You will just drown that room with too much and start running into acoustic issues within than space. Remember the stronger the 20hz or 40hz wave the longer it will repeat and bounce back and forth. Listening its different for everyone and you can't try to adjust any soundsystem with graphs and microphones alone. You can use it as a reference or guide but at the end that speaker or sub its going to go where it sounds the best and looks its best to you. Because to begin with, bass drivers are not to be put on floors they are best high away from floors, so what are we going to do in our living rooms or not so perfect home theaters create hangers and flote our subs in the air all around us🤣🤣🤣 . So dont go so crazy with acoustics or microphones and graphs ect. Set your system fallow the guidelines and let your ears be the judge . If it sounds good to you it will sound good to most, because their will allways be someone will either complaint you got to much highs or too much lows or vice versa. You will never make everyone happy no matter how many microphones or analyzers you use to calibrate any room. I come to learn this after 30 years of profecional installing home and car audio. AMAR BOSE was right its withing the psychoacoustics of human hearing and not the specs.
@Youthman

I agree none of us have perfect room, but disagree that best guess is what we have to work with. I personally would rather measure, make adjustments, then confirm with my ears that it sounds great rather than guess, and see if my ears like it. Regarding 18's being too much, that's the entire reason we measure to blend the subs with the rest of the system. I have always said, "The only time you should notice your subwoofers...is when you turn them off." As you have mentioned, you should not be able to localize them in your room. With all of that said, I'm not a huge measurement guy. I do use REW and UMIK-1 and miniDSP for my subs but I don't measure my speakers. But I certainly see the value in those that do. But at the end of the day, as long as you are happy with your setup, that's really all that matters. Have a blessed day.
@hildareveron6858

Let me explained why you have to becareful with too much sound preassure for a specific room size. I give you an example: If you have a road thats design for 45 mph to drive on you can buy a Lamborghini Diablo and drive on it, but you will never be able to open that lambo and get its full potential as you will soon find out you will run into all kinds problems on that road that its not design for high speeds, now take the lambo to the track thats design for Nascar's and you will find out what your lambo can really do. You can buy the lambo and look good but if your on a 45 mph road , keep the throttle at 45. The road is your room size the lambo its your sub and the throttle us your gain. Hope this helps. Good luck . And try to keep things simple not complicated. As Hometheater is a hubby to be enjoy.
@Youthman

My entire channel is about keeping it simple. I do my best to make even difficult things easy to understand for my audience. I will never reach the full potential of my setup as my ears will give out LONG before my system does. Yes, I do not have a race track or the Autobon where there isn't a speed limit but man it sure is a LOT OF FUN feeling hte rush of massive acceleration getting onto the interstate. :) If we aren't having fun with this hobby, there is no reason to be doing it. Keeping with the car analogy, I would personally prefer to have a car that has more power than I need, than to have a car that is running close to max performance to obtain what a more powerful car could do without breaking a sweat. Car will last much longer when it doesn't have to work as hard. And for those times when you do want the performance, it's there in spades.
