Fantastic video tutorial! I'm new to REW and have watched many RU-vid videos trying to learn how to integrate my subs with my mains. I spent hours and hours trying to refine EQ to get a flat frequency response without success. This video was the best at showing how to have REW calculate EQ settings. Thank-you!

After spending days watching REW tutorials for a complete beginner, you have condensed every point needed to use REW for basic EQ corrections in to a straight forward and simple to understand tutorial. THANK YOU ....... THANK YOU.... One question... The eq I use is internal Peq setting in my Yamaha Home theatre receiver. Do you know which named eq device that REW shows is closest to Yamaha Peq? Should I choose Generic and input them manually? I am a complete beginner but willing and capable of lerning how to use Peq.. Thank you Jason.
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 3 года назад
Thanks so much for your feedback, Jason! To be honest - I don't know Yamaha's PEQ - but as far as I understand it it offers frequency range, gain and Q. So I would use "generic" in REW and try to match it manually as good as possible. You don't have to be too perfect - if you start by reducing the two "main" modal boosts you already should get more transparency and precision. All the best!

Thank-you for sharing. I have used my EQ with one system using Min DSP and another using Roon's EQ. Great results......What room curve would you recommend for my kitchen speakers in a very large room with lots of hard surfaces. Just a starting point.
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 3 года назад
Thanks for your feedback, Martin! Unfortunately there is no recommendation for an EQ setting without knowing the room influences ... So just measure your kitchen speakers at your main listening position as shown in the video and first try to "linearize" the frequency response. After that I would suggest to use some high shelf-filter to make the overall "tone" a little warmer by reducing mids and highs by a few dBs - just use your ears. Regarding reflections of hard surfaces there is no way to get rid of these using filters - you'll have to live with it (because it's the kitchen - otherwise I would suggest some absobers ... ;-) Bye!

Thanks for the great tutorial! Can it be that individually tuned speakers interfere with each other, causing boost and cancelations? I refer to your recommendation to always measure and EQ each speaker individually. If combination of reflected waves of the speaker can cause dips and boosts, woul not the same be true for direct and reflected waves coming from the other speaker? Don't we lose this info if we measure individually?
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 3 года назад
Thanks for your feedback, Dimitri! The problem of measuring both (or more) speakers at the same time is that all of what's happening completely depends on the material you're listening to. Just think about the stereo image of different songs for example. Left speaker will interfere with the right speaker in completely different ways from song to song. So of course it makes sense to look for ONE filter setting for BOTH speakers in a stereo system (especially if the speakers are placed symmetrically) - but the measuring itself should always be done seperately - and then you can look for a good compromise of the two settings.

Great Tutorial Marcel... when measuring multi speaker setups in a venue or event space we would measure speakers individually and apply individual corrective eq per speaker channel is this similar to your process?. Also, in multi speaker setups I’m interested in where you place microphone, in front of each speaker?, at what distance? Or do you leave it placed generally in the main listening area? Thanks
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 3 года назад
Thanks, Keith! Correct - in a multichannel setup each speaker is measured an EQed individually - to make sure its frequency response is as good as possible at your listening position/area. And because you're always focusing on this listening position this is where the microphone is placed. All the best!

greetings, great video. I still cant get my routing down... I have a UFX II RME. how do I send same signal thru to also use as reference on same device? the rew preferences for same channel i/o is grayed out.. please help. I am a musician and mix man, but i suck at this

Hi I did as you instructed the waterfall is showing reverberation of up to 2 seconds!! yet I can barely hear any reverb when I clap or play a low sine wave. Is it possible I am doing something wrong ? My room is surrounded with absorbers and bass traps. I am pointing the microphone to my speaker from my listening position.... it's odd

Sorry - almost impossible to answer this question over the internet ... ;-) I guess it reaches 2 seconds in the lowest bass, correct?

At around 7:40 when trying to adjust to get the middle of the sound pressures, can the software just provide an RMS value to do this instead?
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter Год назад
Hi Chris! Since we use a sweep sound, RMS would not bring a benefit (the RMS level is proportional to the amount of energy over a period of time in the signal). Greetings!

Hey, quick question, can I use a cardioid condenser mic for this measurements?! I have a rode nt1a! How does REW compensate for the mic’s frequency response, please and thank you
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 2 года назад
Hi! You can load a microphone calibration file under "Cal files" in the "Make a measurement" main window. It's recommended to use an omnidirectional measuring mic. Greetings!

When generating the EQ curve where did you get the 57db target level from again?
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 2 года назад
Hi Giuseppe! It depends on the level of your sweep - and I just set it to match this average level looking at the mid frequencies mainly. You can see it better in the complete frequency response, e.g. at 10:30 ... I have to admit the overall SPL level in this demo is quite low ... ;-) So it us not a "target" level, but the reference for the linear response. All the best!

I think I missed something. Once you've generated your eq correction values, how do you get a new measurement with the corrected signal? Does REW have a way to generate an adjusted test sweep?
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 2 года назад
Hi Rick! You'll have to apply the EQ externally, for example in your DAW. Therefore, it's not possible to generate a "modified sweep" withing REW. Greetings!

If you’re on Mac you can use an app called Sound Source, which allows you to use plugins on the system level. If the EQ is used there you’ll here it in the output. I use it to house some metering plugins.

The microphone shown in this video is an Earthworks. But any measuring microphone can be used - it doesn't have to be the "top-notch"-range to get started.

Gruesse aus Prag. Vielen dank fuer die Videos. I have a question to the ringing of the room at the room modes: Does the equalizer shorten the ringing time? I used to worry about the ringing created by a subwoofer port or a passive radiator. Now it seems to me that the subwoofer port ringing may be actually meager compared to the room modes. I have some experience with DSP programming, thus it seems to me that there is a chance, that with DSP amplitude and phase equalization we can actually suppress both the room ringing and subwoofer port ringing, or at least one could lower the time spread by pre-ringing thus achieving a symmetrical time response. Does the Room Equalizer software allow for that? Or is it just equalizing the amplitude response?
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 3 года назад
Thanks for your feedback! Advanced question ... If it comes to the ringing and the "time domain" you should always follow the "classic" approach of room treatment with bass traps - because in the end it's physics ... ;-) What I show in this video is "just" the use of filters for the optimization of the amplitude response.

I appreciate the overview, but room correction EQ is terrible unless you are using it only for small touches after you already treat the room as well as possible. Any drastic reliance of a Room correction EQ system ruins the natural timbre of a monitor and driver set. I can assure you it affects them and their harmonics and resonances in a way which you want to minimize. Remember the saying "Less is better". In addition, Genelec is good, certainly much better than Dynaudio, but i find them just a little bit overrated. Have you heard Adams? Once you go to the ribbon tweeter, there is no coming back. The extended range of the silky detail is unparalleled. Also that correction of that Genelec overlayed is not impressing me at all. That should be doing a better correction than that, but regardless, im not a fan of drastic corrections. You may wish to use membrane traps and perhaps some helmholtz resonator methods in the treatment approaches you are going for.
@marcelschechter
@marcelschechter 2 года назад
Hi! I totally agree with you that acoustical treatment is by far the best solution. The less you have to use filtering, the better. And you can't do anything about the time domain issues with filters. Greetings!
