Trees weren't meant for just in-ground planting. Despite living in a cold zone 5b climate, I love sinking tropical trees like brugmansia into containers for my patio. No matter what tree or shrub you choose, it's inevitable that they'll eventually outgrow their accommodations. That's where root pruning comes in and it sounds intimidating but is so not. Let me show you how I do it!
Also, I'm planting around the base of the tree this year with some pretty cool annuals from Proven Winners that can be planted pot and all right into my container. They're called Eco+ Grande containers from Proven Winners and they're made entirely from plants! So no waste and the pot also feeds the plants as it decomposes. Win-Win!
Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more garden content from a DIY gardener, click the bell to subscribe. That way, you'll never miss a post.
As always, thanks for your support and I'll see you in the garden!

I had no idea you could trim the roots. Thank you.

I did that to my Charles Grimaldi this spring. I think I was too timid and now I can see I could’ve gone a little bit more aggressively. Next spring, I’ll do that. I always thought that you have to trim the top as well so that the roots are not too small for it

I really enjoy seeing trees and shrubs in pots. I need to plant one for our front door area...good to know that over time will need some root pruning.

Thank you. This is so timely! I have 3 trees I overwintered. They are all beasts. You have helped me figure out how to train them.

❤excellent video. I’ve been growing Brugmansias 30 years. I have 36 varieties. I’m in British Columbia. I’m wondering where you are?

I have a large brgmansia I’ve overwintered in my basement for the past six years. It’s definitely outgrown its pot and after watching your video I think I can confidently prune the roots. Would love to see an update on how your brugmansia looks now. Thank you for sharing

Go for it! Mine is flowering earlier than usual due in large part I believe to the root refresh. Stay tuned for the update! Coming soon and thanks for tuning in!

Love the root pruning tutorial very helpful! I’m still a skeptic on the compostable pots, I had some from another co a few years ago And the pots didn’t decompose and stilted the growth or killed the plants

Can you do this to rose bushes planted in pots? My pots are 22x 20.

I am so glad to see this video today. I just lost my Bloodgood Japanese Maple this year. I wish this was something I knew as to have avoided loosing it 🥲. I just purchased a Dwarf Globe Blue Spruce (which I’ve always wanted I 💕 the color). I purchased a 20” planter. Where did you purchase your Brugmansia? It sounds heavenly. Thanks so much for sharing.

I bought several years ago from a local botanic garden. It was so tiny, like 6” tall, and it just loves to grow. Lots of water and food and she’s happy!

@@susannaylor451 Hi Susan! I use a water soluble fertilizer like Miracle Grow for my containers. I use organic fertilizers in the landscape and veg garden.
