Thanks Paul. All is well, life is just bit manic at mo with 2 young children and so haven’t had the time (or the energy 😂🙈) to do any videos. Don’t worry I will get back into making them to give you updates on all the plants! Chris

Would they be able to make it over winter in a garage I keep my plants in there as they're dormant over winter it's not a heated garage but doesn't get below freezing would the cuttings survive in water like that?
@gotropicaluk8362
@gotropicaluk8362 Год назад
Can’t say i’ve ever tried it…🤷🏼‍♂️ they will survive fine in there, but not sure whether cuttings will grow the roots. Let me know if it works.👍🏻

PS with minor protection on frosty nights my small Meyers lemon still looks to be ok outside, even still has a ripe lemon on it. But I think the coldest night I've had this winter was about -2, possibly -3

Good video! I've got 7 cuttings off an 8 year old brug from a friend's tree. 1st time I've grown them. They are quite fussy plants I find and only like certain areas. I lost most of the leaves after moving them from wintering period to outdoor. I did this gradually a few hours at a time but they still didn't like it and dropped the leaves. They are coming back with new leaves but have slowed down. Can anyone tell me if they will pick up again? They are certainly not dead just seem to be slower growing now. I've repotted in John innes No3 last week. Anything else I can do to help growth or is a case of just waiting?
@gotropicaluk8362
@gotropicaluk8362 5 лет назад
Brugs can drop all their leaves and still flush out tons of growth and flowers during the summer and autumn. The more root space you can give them the bigger they will get. They will soon get going once the weather warms up. As long as the stems are still green you’ll be fine. I have another video on the channel about growing them which may be of use to you. All the best. Chris

@@gotropicaluk8362 Hi Chris thanks for your reply. That's good to know, I'm glad they will pick up. I've always got more cuttings available from donor tree if needed but I aim to keep these as stems are still strong and green. I think buying them commercially will be difficult soon anyway with the DEFRA restrictions. Glad I've got cuttings available! They are fabulous plants and the scent overtakes anything in the garden! As mentioned I've just repotted them. 2 largest have been put into 24" pots and the others into 18". Keen to see how these new ones grow and the general Y configuration shape that they seem to grow in is begging to form. It's good to know someone else who knows about them. The Internet is great but tends to be sometimes biased info! 🤔

lyonheart84 UK exotic fruit growing enthusiast thanks Brett. How many persimmons are you up to now? Il have to get some cuttings from you!
@lyonheart84
@lyonheart84 5 лет назад
@@gotropicaluk8362 12 or 13 varieties 🙄🙄🤣🤣. Asian, American and 2 hybrids. Once they've developed some branches you'd be welcome to try a cutting although apparently they are near impossible to root. Every single plant I have bought is grafted, seems they are propagated by grafting named varieties onto seedling rootstock of D.Virginiana or D.Lotus. I cant remember if you've got any persimmons at all, but if you have once mine have grown a bit I could send you some named scion wood to graft onto yours 😎😎
@gotropicaluk8362
@gotropicaluk8362 5 лет назад
lyonheart84 UK exotic fruit growing enthusiast yes I have a couple of persimmons. One from Spain of a unknown variety, but am yet to try the fruit, and the other is a young Fuyu. The Spanish persimmon tree is quite large and so if I’m not impressed with the fruit I will graft the Fuyu into it. Do you have the vanilla persimmon in your collection? Chris
@lyonheart84
@lyonheart84 5 лет назад
@@gotropicaluk8362 no I don't have the vanilla one. I also have an unnamed plant just bought from a nursery as Diospyros Kaki, cant see any graft so I'm guessing grown from seed or possibly a cutting. My fuyu came from Thompson and Morgan but as I know most persimmons are marketed as fuyu by 'normal' nurseries I wouldn't like to assume this is named correctly. As the others came from specialist nurseries they should be correct. Asian varieties as well as the fuyu I have Hana Fuyu, Rojo Brillante, Tipo, Cioccolatino, Kostata, Tam Kam and Jiro. American I have Garretson, Morris Burton and Prok. Asian/American crosses I have Nikitas Gift and Mount Goverla. I'm looking forward to see what happens with them 👍

Hi Chris, thanks for the videos. When would you start to bring the brugmansia outside after winter? And would you expect the cuttings to flower in the first season? I live in Essex and started these last year from seed, so far so good. It’s great to see these grown in the uk. Any advice is appreciated, would love to see you make more videos about these plants😬
@gotropicaluk8362

Lewis Dahl i have another brugmansia video on my channel from a couple years back... I tend to bring brugmansia plants out once the weather warms up. Usually sometime between March and April, just keep an eye out on any late frosts. A cutting, like the ones in the video, will grow to about 5-6ft in one season in good soil, with lots of flowers on it. I’m not sure how long it takes from seed... when i get some time I plan to get back to making more videos on all the plants I have growing!👍🏻

Is it possible to skip the potting process if the end goal is to plant them in the ground? Is it safer to pot them between rooting and planting them in the ground? Also, should the stems be kept out of the sun while they are rooting in water?
@gotropicaluk8362
@gotropicaluk8362 5 лет назад
I have planted some of these in the ground in my garden now, but when I did these it was winter, so I wanted to be able to keep them somewhere sheltered while they were growing.(in case of an cold nights) But yes if your doing this during late spring or summer, or you live in a warm climate, you could plant them straight into the ground. They are similar requirements to bananas, lots of fertiliser and lots of water during warm weather. 👍🏻

Thank you so much, I have bought some every year and lost all but 2 during the winter even in the greenhouse. I will take cutting from my largest plant and put them in a bucket of water and keep my fingers crossed. Can you please tell me how much to water the plants during the winter, I am going to try to move it into the greenhose. Thank you.

Paul B thanks Paul. My time is consumed with a 3 year old and a 7 month old, so I have to try and make videos whenever I get a free moment. Which is not often!😂 great to hear your getting lots of new plants from the brugs. I lost my kumquat crop to a couple of hard freezes, so may have to rethink that one, but other than that all is well. How’s your garden getting on? Chris
@paulblatchfordplymouth
@paulblatchfordplymouth 5 лет назад
GoTropicalUK Yes, I noticed you still have your little helper!😀 Shame about your Kumquat, even you have your failures then!. The leaves on my Lemon and orange tress in pots look dry and crispy, but still green underneath the bark of them, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!🙏🏻. Looking forward to more vids from you when you find the time then.👍🏻
@gotropicaluk8362
@gotropicaluk8362 5 лет назад
Paul B I have many failures...😂 my lemon tree again dropped a load of leaves this winter, and yet my lime tree which is 6ft away is untouched by the frost. So I have no idea sometimes with these plants. Satsumas tho have done amazing, no damage whatsoever, which is the citrus I am leaning towards being my fave. Also the grapefruit in my front garden has been untouched by a couple of -5c nights. So I may give the lemon one more year and decide if it can really earn a place in the garden, may go into a pot and something better take its place.😂
@paulblatchfordplymouth

I have brugmansias down here in Devon. However I was really disappointed that although I had a great show of blooms there was no scent. Is this usual or can it take longer than the first growing season for the scent to come in?, also do you leave yours out year round or bring in over winter?.
@gotropicaluk8362
@gotropicaluk8362 5 лет назад
The blooms are a night time scent only. So if you walk out past your plant in the evening you should smell them. I have left brugs in the ground over winter before and they have come through in mild winters, but they will usually benefit from some winter protection. All the best. Chris
