This is wonderful. I've used RM for about 2 years and keep learning more. The Missing Information and Place List merging very helpful. I like the more organized nested media: one main folder than organizing folders within. Thank you

Thanks for the video. When you highlighted that the sibling death appeared before the sibling birth, that is where you need to use the power of the Sort Date field. Nobody gets to see that date, it is just for internal to RootsMagic. So if you make the sibling death 'Sort Date' to be one day later, then it will appear on your timeline in the correct order.

I like this: I just discovered FamilySearch the other day, but I already have close to 400 in my AncestryDNA (birth family tree), and around 100 in my adoptive family tree. I like the idea of keeping everything private especially with regard to my adoptive family. This software is an invaluable tool for facilitating privacy with research...especially when utilizing FamilySearch.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
Very true. I like to keep some information about the living offline. FamilySearch does automatically privatize anyone who is living, but I still would prefer to some information on my desktop in RootsMagic.

Devon Noel Lee, this was a good presentation of RM7. I have used it for years. Would it be possible to get a list of you file system in all the different drives? That was the most impressive organizational system I have ever seen (I only saw bits and pieces though). I desperately need a way to deal with my 60+ years of genealogy research collections. You have cracked the cement wall on filing systems. I subscribed and do not want to miss any of your helpful videos.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

I should probably make a video or blog post about my file system. I try to keep it simple yet expansive to accommodate my files. There are folks who say it's too simple, but I'd be happy to share. Give me a little bit. Thanks for subscribing. Make sure you hit the bell as well. RU-vid is a little funny about the two-step "please tell me when there's a new video." Also, we have a newletter that lets you know if there are any videos you've missed. You can sign up by going to blog.familyhistoryfanatics.com and the newsletter screen will pop-up.

Welcome to Family History Fanatics. I'm working my way through a list of viewer recommendations and I will be tackling more RootsMagic videos in the October (fingers crossed). My family is from Columbus, Ohio. I moved to Texas as a toddler so I don't remember it much. I make a lot of 'enemies' when I root for the Wolverines, but truthfully I'm a Texas A&M fan, so that gets me off the hook. But my roots are Franklin County, Huron County, Hamilton County, and Licking County, Ohio.

How do you keep from adding living family members to online genealogy sites. Love the video. I am looking for a genealogy software I am learning this.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 3 года назад
That's a great question and I plan on making a video about it in the near future. The answer depends on which online tree you're uploading to. In FamilySearch, you control who you upload to as there is no automatic syncing from RootsMagic to Family Search. Family Tree Maker doesn't (unless they've changed recently) upload to FamilySearch. As for Ancestry, RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker can upload your information to this online tree. However, if you mark anyone as living (or born within the last 100 years and has no death date), then it's my understanding that Ancestry will automatically privatize that information. This is helpful because perhaps you want the living individuals on your Ancestry tree to make DNA matches. However, I believe with RootsMagic, you have an option to exclude living persons to your Ancestry upload. You can also exclude living persons when you create a GEDCom file to share with other researchers. I'm uncertain about Family Tree Maker at this time but I'm definitely going to be investigating this further.

If you want the events to show in the correct order on the person's edit page, you simply go to the sort date on the right side of the person edit page...when you are entering a date for a death that was the same day as the birth, make the death day one day later in the "sort date" and it will not change your information but will sort it in the correct sequence.

I would share my information from RootsMagic to FamilySearch. Or you can have everyone download a copy of RootsMagic essentials and then share exported GEDcom files with them. The won't have access to your media, but they can see your shared tree.

Hi Devon. Nice video. You certainly got me thinking. Q1) how's the interface with Wikitree (the only place I do any work)? Given that most everything I do is on WT, what advantages will I get from having Rootsmagic - or any of it's competitors - as an offline, private geneascape (apart from the privacy issues you spoke of and a few of the tools, especially the timeline, which floored me, because I've had to create my own timelines from scratch for 20 years!) I guess what I'm asking is, "Are the advantages worth the hard work of transferring hundrends of ancestors from Wikitree to the Rootsmagic program?"
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

RootsMagic doesn't interface with WikiTree. Sorry. I don't know of a program that does.

Hi Devon, I've just come back to genealogy research after long absence. I was using Family Tree Maker but thats way outdated now so in researching new software, I'm very impressed with RootsMagic - and thought your review excellent. I like it (RM9)very much as I like my data on my computer - not for everyone to see even if you select 'private'! I need now to transfer data from Ancestry via Gedcom file copies - do you have any suggestions for doing that? Would very much appreciate any relevant info. Thx.

I’m very new to all of this but have already created a pretty huge tree with 2000 people in Ancestry. The ancestry videos recommend family tree maker since it integrates with ancestry and also seems to have the capability to pull in hints from the other sources like family search? Is there a video where you contrast roots magic against family tree maker? Would be interested in knowing the pros and cons of selecting one over the other.

(I have no idea about this stuff, just learning.) Can this accommodate adoptions? If so could the family tree (in this case the adoptive tree is the one I’d be making mainly) and add the biological one in somehow?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
Welcome to genealogy. The family tree program can handle adoptive and biological lines. My grandmother was adopted by Harry Long and Lura Smith. We have learned that her biological mother was Agnes Anderson. In RootsMagic, I attach Grannie to both Harry and Lura (and mark them as the adoptive parents) and Agnes (and indicate she is the biological mother). So, yes, RootsMagic can handle the adoptive, biological, step, and blended families.

Thank you for posting this. I have wanted to buy a family tree software for my PC for a while and I'm finally ready to make a decision. A comment below made me wonder: Is there a limit to the size of a family tree on RootsMagic7? I use Ancestry now and my Ancestry family tree current has 8,8139 people on it. Will RootsMagic handle a tree of that size that is still growing?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
It is my understanding that it will handle large trees of that size. If it gets too large, break the trees up into smaller chunks. It complicates things with Ancestry syncing, but it's an option. FYI. I keep my tree small because I truly can't manage that many names. So, about 2,000 is how many I keep on my computer. I use FamilySearch for the larger branches I've explored. That's just my approach.

@dlwatib

I tried keeping my family tree in two chunks but wasn't happy with that. When I got a computer with more memory I merged the two chunks back together. I also removed some in-laws and their descendants that had large trees that I wasn't very interested in and just keep track of them in FamilySearch.org. My offline family tree is just a bit more than 3000 people. My recommendation is to keep track of your direct ancestors, aunts, uncles and cousins that you really care about offline, and all the more peripheral people only in the online database of your choice.

One HUGE reason to have Roots Magic, and the main reason we got it, is you are able to print out your family tree information for yourself rather than only being able to print it with a company that Ancestry.com pushes your information to. This is especially good if you have a large family tree with several surnames to print making it extremely expensive to print just one copy. Since we started with Ancestry and then got Roots Magic it was "one click" easy to transfer the data between the two. Additionally, It knows that you have made changes to your Ancestry page and makes it very simple to add them to your Roots Magic data and vice versa. Another feature we really like is that it automatically prompts you to back up your data any time a change has been made before your shut down your software.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
Tim... I still haven't connected my tree to Ancestry as it's not an easy task between two active trees, so I'll have to talk with the RootsMagic folks on how to make it happen. But, I'm glad you have it working for you. I forgot about the backup feature on exit. That is very handy. Thanks for adding to the conversation.
@kcmozart
@kcmozart 6 лет назад
Do you have the full version? I think it is only $20. If not it may be worth getting and make it easier to transfer trees between the two programs. Once you have your trees both places RM makes it really easy to keep them both synced, weather you do your work in RM or Ancestry.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
Tim, I do have the full version. The trouble I've seen is that if I have a RM tree linked with FamilySearch, I have to upload that tree to Ancestry from RM and then start the source finding all over again. For a three with 2,000 people, that's a lot of man-hours. Additionally, I have numerous links in my Ancestry tree that aren't hints (I added the sources). So, I have to process all of that as well. Or I have to download my tree from Ancestry and merge it with my RM tree that's linked with FamilySearch. However, that takes a lot of man hours and I haven't understood yet which way the merge should take place to keep all of the links and syncs. When I have more time, I'll figure it out and report on it. However, with 5 homeschooled children and a business to run, that's asking a lot of time sacrificed to get the trees in sync.

Yes they do. You can even set the sync to download all the media you have linked into your gallery (or your tree). This is a great way to save all your sources. I'm a family search user and recently became aware that my living relatives will not be accessible to my family when I pass on. It's important to me that my descendents continue to do my families Family History and Temple work. Any suggestions how I might manage this issue, so that the living relatives I'm now recording on Family Search will be available to my family on my passing. I understand that my Church account that I use to login on Family Search be closed on my passing.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 года назад
I don't share details about living persons on FamilySearch, even though they encourage us to do so. Instead, I place all of the living information in RootsMagic. (Since you're asking on a RootsMagic video, I hope you're aware of this tool.) Then, I make sure my computer log-in is included in my papers for the executor of my estate (or a living relative who lives close to me). I have instructions for the living to care for my research after I'm gone. When I was preparing my will, this is the advice my genealogy loving lawyer gave me. It's much easier to pass on information on a computer than in an online account.

I have Family Tree Software and it syncs with my online family tree at Ancestry. Just curious...would it be worthwhile for me to get RootsMagic software & upload my tree?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
Great question. It depends on what you want to do. RootsMagic was my primary program because it worked well with FamilySearch and was a replacement for Personal Ancestral File. RootsMagic could be a go-between for Ancestry and FamilySearch, but it's a little time consuming to have it all work together. If Family Tree Maker connects with Ancestry and that's your primary focus, then you're set. If it doesn't interact with FamilySearch and other sites, then you might consider switching. The key is, where do you research most and does your current software accomplish that goal for you?
@deckocards6988
@deckocards6988 6 лет назад
This is the first time I have ever seen a genealogical software that will link to other databases. I think that's really neat because you might catch sources on other databases that you don't have on Ancestry. The only drawback that I can see is the duplication of sources---that would be the time consuming part that I think you are referring to in your comment :-)
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 6 лет назад
Yes... the duplication of sources becomes quite the mess as RM currently doesn't have a way to have one "1850 US Census" that all of the programs can recognize as one source. But I like the idea of a potential hub for linking out to various databases. There's great potential in where RootsMagic is heading.
