By fan demand ala Strawpoll, here's a Remake or Rebreak for the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for SNES and GBA. I also briefly review The Legend of Zelda Four Swords for the GBA.
Game Mavericks (Let's Play Channel):
/ @gamemavericks

Google+:

Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as its original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc.
2- Re-Meh: Not quite as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Fails to add any new content or fix problems of the original.
3- Remake: Superior to the original, but not necessarily worth it if you already own the original. May add some new content or fix some problems of the original.
4- Replace: So much better than the original, that there's no reason for new players to own the original. Not only a faithful recreation of the original, but fixes old bugs and adds new content.

I can understand in the case that someone used to the SNES version gets a little annoyed at Link's constant mouth noises in the GBA game, but to say it's a flaw that ruins the game goes a little too far.

I will say that it does seem like the 2D zeldas are faster paced in combat, so the repeated clip probably plays faster, and you def use the sword to remove bushes more often (because they block your path), so it doesn't quite have the some restraint as 3D zelda.

Virtual Console games aren't ports. They're literally emulation.

Which is why I don't do ROR episodes on them. I use them as a proxy for original games I don't own since it's literally emulating the original.

No. Not to sound like a jerk, or sound like I hate the GBA (I love the system to death!) ,but They really are pretty much ports. They change absolutely NOTHING that should be noticeable. An RoR would be AMAZING for The first 7 FF games, but I think they should be the PSP/IOS/PC/Android Remakes.

I think the sword swinging noises are fine in games with 3D animation; a sword swing in those games takes a lot longer than the 2D swings. But spamming the sword button in a 2D game is SO quick that you’re getting far more Yells Per Second (YPS if you will) than in a 3D game where spamming the sword button would get you maybe 3 YPS
@AoiKaze2000

Something to keep in mind with the original LoZ - It shipped with a map that showed most the locations of most of the dungeons. In level 5, you could get the whistle, which would take you to the entrance of the different dungeons. Without that map, you absolutely need a guide. And then there's the brute force method of burning every single bush, bombing every single thing, and exploring that way - which had enough stuff hidden underneath things that you could potentially stumble upon one of these secrets, which would lead you to explore others. Granted, I'm not saying that it was perfect, but that also was part of what made it as unique a play experience as it was.
@cowardlylion42

I’m sure this is buried below, but you don’t need the Cane of Somaria to beat the Ice Palace. You are supposed to do a circuitous route back through the dungeon and you push a block from the floor above onto the switch to access the boss.

Best thing about the GBA version for me: the save system. Any door you exit is you spawn point, instead of just your house or sanctuary. The pink hair in ALTtP is because there was an glitch in the sprite, making the hair pink. They could actually fix it in the GBA remake, but they decided to make it pink like the SNES version.

@Zipzeolocke
@Zipzeolocke 4 года назад
Yeah it's not a glitch, it was a limitation of the amount of colors they could use on the character model. And the pink is from his transformation into a pink bunny. It makes me wonder why the bunny had to be pink, if the developers decided to make the bunny blonde that likely would have solved the issue

Um, no. It was a choice made to help differentiate the color of the skin from the hair, given the low resolution of the sprite.
@duffman18
@duffman18 4 года назад
This is completely incorrect. The pink hair was a deliberate design decision. The proof is that in the concept art pre the making of the game, Link had pink hair! Do you think they would have just left in a glitch through the entire year or so of development and never thought to change it despite it being a super easy fix that even many amateur romhackers can do? Of course not. They left it in because they chose it to be pink in the first place Here's a magazine interview with Miyamoto prior to the release of the game showing some of the concept art for Link, with, guess what, pink hair!: i.warosu.org/data/vr/img/0014/19/1393274654463.jpg

I can see why people wouldn't like the voice clips. In Oot, you generally don't fight too many enemies that take a lot of swings and you don't meet enemies as frequently it seems. In LttP, the combat seems a bit more fast paced so you'll most likely mash the attack button more and hear the voice more often I guess.
@chaoskiller6084
@chaoskiller6084 5 лет назад
You're goddang right. It's because button mashing to attack. In OoT, 90% of the time you can run past all the enemies. Also, enemies have more variety in how you kill them, meaning you don't hear the annoying voice clips as much.
@lolidemon3163
@lolidemon3163 4 года назад
@@chaoskiller6084 more variety? In oot, the main weapons that can kill enemies (outside of ur sword) is really only bombs/bombchu, arrows, and megaton hammer, (granted theres certain enemies that dies to say the hookshot/boomerang/deku nuts/slingshot but those are far and few between). If i am not mistaken u don't hear the voice clips with the arrows and hammer and i wanna say slingshot but u do with the bombs wen throwing. Not much variety there in how to kill enemies. Whereas in lttp, u not only have arrows, bombs, and hammer to attk enemies u have the fire/ice rod to attk enemies, the medallions. Only weapon that doesn't kill enemies in lttp where it kills certain enemies in oot is the boomerang (there might be one or 2 enemies such as keese that dies with the boomerang but i honestly don't use it enough to know). And if ur skilled enough u can even kill some enemies with the cane of somaria so i'd argue theres more variety to kill enemies. Granted once u get the 3rd best sword weapons outside of bombs and the hammer are weaker than the sword so not much reason to use em (though same can be said abt biggoron sword in oot). Now it is possible to get the silver arrows by beating just 3 dungeons in the dark world (dark world is def not linear u can beat the dungeons in any order given u have the weapons/skill/knowledge) which straight up demolishes any non shielded enemy to the point where the sword gets redundant.
@chaoskiller6084
@chaoskiller6084 4 года назад
@@lolidemon3163 Sure, there might be more weapons, but they're rarely required if ever. Plus, you literally said that you can get the best weapons really early. So what's the point of using the weaker weapons if you can use your sword every fight?

I respectfully disagree with your definition of remakes and ports. Metroid Zero Mission in example is a full remake of the first Metroid, and Ocarina of Time 3D is also a remake of the original game even if it focuses on the remade graphics. Although I agree it can be hard to define some games like The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, "Remaster" seems to be the most accurate term. Virtual Console are emulation, not ports, and A Link To the Past on GBA is definitely a port with bonus content. NES Classics on GBA are also ports :)

A remake is when a game is made, again, from the ground up. Zelda 3 on GBA wasn't made from the ground-up, it is a port as the code of the SNES version was re-used for different hardware (and obviously changed to accommodate the transition). It would be monumental waste of resources and times to remake a game so precisely instead of simply porting it. Virtual console games aren't ports, they are emulations. Emulation is when compiled code is decompiled and then recompiled into a different format in real-time.

Actually, I think LttP would have been served with just a little less "streamlining" to make it a more exploration based game. For example, here's a really subtle change they could have made: take the numbers off of the dark world dungeons. After the Palace of Darkness, you can immediately access the Swamp Palace, Skull Woods and Thieves' Town. Do Thieves' Town first, you can at least walk into all of the remaining dungeons. MY preferred order is 1-4-3-6-2-5-7, at least on the SNES version.

when you load your save game you can start from the last building you entered as well, where in the snes version you could only start from the sanctuary or links house (and later the dark world pyramyd) I also like the replay value of finding items earlier than intended and/or doing dark work dungeons in different orders

This is actually one of the few SNES remakes for the GBA I bothered with. I purchased two copies only so that I could play Four Swords. But I actually ended up liking the ALttP game on it. I even like the new cries they added when Link swings his sword. In my opinion, the GBA's PCM audio is very good. I think they didn't have to hurt the graphic or audio quality as much for this GBA port, because the sprites were simpler to begin with.

Since LTTP and Link's Awakening were my introductions to the Zelda franchise, the item swapping thing doesn't bother me at all. I've always considered it a core staple of the series and just something to expect when playing a Zelda game. As a result it doesn't bug me at all and makes the GBC games among my favorites in the series, along with LTTP and LBW. Now that I think of it, that's probably just one more reason BOTW is the one 3D Zelda I like. Its design choices harken a lot more to the 2D games than to OOT, MM, WW, TP, or SS.

A fun glitch people may not know about in the gba version is when your going up hyrule castle after you've got the master sword, once you get to the room where you have to push a statue out of the way, pull it with you into the next room. When the screen scrolls immediately go back in the room with the statue. when he screen scrolls again go left again and Link should jump through the floor. Now you can roam about just like the snes glitch. Ive tried to explore around but its really easy to get stuck.

You never needed the can of somalia to finish that dungeon. I thought it was weird so checked my original snes cartridge version. I already finished that dungeon but don't have the cain in my inventory. So... There is another solution to that puzzle i guess. Plus... I don't respect your opinion on the GB and GBC games. Mainly because you just bashed them without argument. The linked gameplay on the GBC games is amazing and I think link's awakening is one of the best Zelda games overall. Why? Because it was the first one to change the setting and characters besides link and the gameplay is still solid for a GB title. I grew up with a gameboy and zelda on the gameboy was FAR ahead of any other gameboy title of the time (except maybe for pokemon but that came later on).

@archvile9388
@archvile9388 4 года назад
Yes you can do it without the cane, but it's a massive pain. There's a a push block in the room above that can be pushed into a hole which you can then jump down, and from there you can push the block onto the switch. However, block you need to push is blocked by those orange peg barriers, so you need to flip the switch that lowers them, which in the process raises the blue ones that block off the half of the room with the block you need to push. You get around this by coming into the room from the other side (there's an entrance for each side of the room) which requires you to circle around nearly the entire dungeon to reach. Since You don't even need to enter the ice palace and get the dungeon item (it's the blue armor) to complete misery mire, it's much less of a hassle to just head straight for misery mire after thieves town and come back with the cane. Also I completely agree about Link's Awakening and the Oracle games. Those were great. I only played the Oracle games when they released on the virtual console, but I must of completed Link's Awakening 20 as a kid.

I am currently playing the SNES version on the SNES Classic/Mini. Tell me about the heavy damage input from even small enemies. It's annoying when even one hit can take up to two or three hearts. The Minish Cap, which was my first Zelda experience, was much easier in comparison. Throughout the Minish Cap from start to finish I got only 4 Game Overs that I can easily remember. One of those was from not getting to Princess Zelda, who was turned to stone, on time after Vaati drained all her life force. Minish Cap is nice and smooth compared to ALTTP. In ALTTP, on the other hand, I got so many deaths and game overs, I can't even count them. Seeing that others like you face the same issue in this game, I feel this is normal for ALTTP. It's a big shame that the developers did not try to improve the damage input in the GBA version. To add to ExoParadgim Gamer's words, another difference that I noticed between the SNES and GBA versions, is that the word, "fairy", in the SNES version is spelled as "Fairie", as if it were some Celtic name. The GBA version, on the other hand, spells the word, "fairy", correctly. I also noticed that Link's shield in the SNES version is blue, while the shield is red in the GBA version. I do have a functioning GBA SP, but why get ALTTP for the GBA, when I already have one pre-loaded on the SNES Classic?
