A sample from "Rory Block Teaches The Guitar of Robert Johnson - Exploring the Repertoire - DVD 2" available as an instant download here: leapingbrain.c...
Rory Block's life-long mission has been to fully understand Robert Johnson's incredible songs and guitar techniques. This is the second groundbreaking installment of her journey into the great blues artist's legacy, and she provides complete note-by-note, lick-by-lick instruction for three of his most powerful songs.Each one of these classic Robert Johnson songs represents a different stylistic aspect of his playing. Cross Road Blues exemplifies the myriad techniques that Johnson put into his songs in open G tuning; Ramblin' On My Mind utilizes an obscure altered tuning; Hellhound On My Trail is a haunting non-slide blues in open D. Rory takes each song apart, putting a microscope on the intros, chord positions, slide moves, picking, strumming and other blues guitar skills you'll need to play them yourself.Rory's passion for this music, along with her remarkable performing talent, makes her the perfect teacher for these blues guitar techniques. If you can master each of these songs you'll have the key to the rest of the amazing Robert Johnson repertoire.
You can get the DVD version of these titles at Homespun Tapes.

"they carbon dated the mt. st. helen's lava flows. they came up with varying dates of tens of thousands of years old, at differing sites." really? and where did you get that? from none other than a creationist propaganda site. if it were true there would have been great and very public debate over this. btw....it was Mt Etna where the questionable tests were supposedly taken.

I actually won a RJ portrait painting from a man in a bet, done by a folk artist in New Orleans. He said he used voodoo tunings and don't need no capo..... ....I had seen the picture and took notice the first time ...he obviously didn't look for it when he saw it originally. ......one of my favorite art pieces....

@digitaldown The devil's got money, he's got lawyers, but he don't have music. He hasn't caught Robert Johnson yet, and he never will. The devil numbs you, makes it fake, but if your hair stands on end, and you get a little scared, that ain't lies - that's the truth coming through, the glowing spark of hope that the dark will never swallow. That's what it means to know the blues, and that's why it's holy.

☠️ PRAYING. ☠️ TO THE DEAD ☠️ IS VERY DANGEROUS GREAT opinions on "making it your own" HOWEVER..... I'm sure NOT going to "pray for RJ's spirit to come into me" & that has got nothing to do with that devil business, And for the sake of argument could be very real & possible either way, I think that remark about praying before you start playing RJ stuff is nonsense, tryin' to look badass blueswoman... there's many ways to get yourself into the mental spirit ... to get that gut feeling...besides praying for some dead man's influence over your mind..watch out for that stuff, a RJ is dead and gone, but demonic activities ABSOLUTELY are not.

She is the only female player I've ever heard that can play this song with authority, and, as she says in the beginning, with the funk, force, and groove the song needs. There's nothing dainty or mannered about the way she plays it-she can hold her own with any male player.

@digitaldown just like the legend says robert johnson sucked on the guitar until he sold his soul to satan and then he was the greatest guitarist. he went from worst to the best in a mater of 6 months or so. then he died so young didnt even live to tell about it. well I guess he did tell about it in his lyrics.

how typical conjuring the spirit of robert johnson in order to help her play her guitar. isnt that what all the other rock guitarist do to help them play some things that that they cant play over again the exact way they did it the first time. why cause they didnt do it the spirit that they conjured did. that exactly what carlos santana was talking about.

Met her early on in her career. She became over the top interested in RJ, copied with precision the 32 great recordings, and even made close friends of the family. Basically she would have a PhD in Robert Johnson if they had such a course. What's not to like. She was extremely dedicated, played just so well, and lionized RJ for his style, songs, and playing. Incredible to think that I saw her so early on in her career. My hats off to Rory; someone you should try and hear in person.
@terafrma
@terafrma 12 лет назад
um...a note to the critics....Rory is widely considered the best living interpreter of Robert Johnson and has the resume to prove it. And if you read the notes, this is not a lesson. The lesson is on the dvd. Buy it. Learn it. At the very least, you might learn a little grammar (malvarello...). Unless of course, you have already mastered the Johnson catalog...in which case, i would love to see some of your videos....

I wish I could summon the spirit of Robert Johnson or Skip James to find out their secrets. But that would be a scientific miracle. hehe But seriously, I only made that comment because I'm tired of people making things bigger than they really are. I like her words. The 'bollocks' bit is probably a little clue to how she finds the words to explain the feeling of the rhythms and licks. It's an intelligent intution coming from open-mindedness. which leads to her being able to 'feel' it better than Eric Clapton.

I happened upon this video "Rory Block Teaches..." purely by accident. She is a very fine teacher. I'll be looking for this DVD advertised by Rory Block. Is it just me? but I tend to avoid different tunings on the guitar other than standard. The irony is, I've been wanting to venture in to slide playing for quite some time but a whole lot of which calls for open tunings. Rory, that's a lovely guitar you're playing. Those inlays! An art object of imagination and beauty.
