An evening walk around my garden. Some highs and lows with the roses this year. A challenging year weather wise and some self inflicted wounds. My early impressions of rose Penelope Lively, a lovely rose I’m very happy with and I film for some time to let you make your own minds up.

Hi Jay Jay. I mulched with well rotted horse manure and compost in the spring and quite honestly, if I added fertiliser now ,I think they'd leave their beds and do a dance 😅. I planted them last autumn, well, mme Alfred Carrière has reached the top of the arch, plus flowers, and Lady of Shalot is blooming and reaching for the sky. Incredible. Many thanks for sharing 🙋‍♀️

Hi Kim. Glad to hear your roses are doing well. My Madame Alfred Carriere is still in flower now just about. The first flush was lovely and since then it’s continued its growth but with just an odd flower here and there not so much a second flush as such. Height or spread wise it sounds like yours has done better than mine, but mine is still a rose I’m very happy with indeed. It will go front of house next year when more established and snow princess will come out. :)

@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Год назад
Hi Rakesh, I wouldn’t be surprised if most roses in the world go unfed so not sure it’s less traveled, but I’m giving it a go. I honestly think at this point at least my soil is just not so good. If I keep putting mulch down each year I’m sure it will improve over time. And the weather this year making things even more difficult to gauge, one or two roses doing better than last year it does get very confusing. But I’ll crack on the year is not over yet hopefully by a long way ;)
@bloombaag
@bloombaag Год назад
@@Jay_Jay Mulching and feeding for initial 2-3 years with beneficial fungi/ bacteria will help the plants to establish well and gain enough strength to thrive on their own. I have seen even younger ones 4-5 years old own root roses doing fine with practically no feeding. Choice of particular rootstock will behave differently with no feed or hot weather situation. Keep exploring mate, soon you will hit sweet spot to balance things.
@nikkonch
@nikkonch Год назад
I don't know if you can blame a poor showing now on lack of feeding. I fed all my roses and apart from Gabriel and Eustacia, which are still just about hanging on, my other DA roses are all rather bloom-free - last year I was amazed by Desdemona's flower size, shape and their profusion - this year she is looking unimpressive on all those counts, virtually bare at the moment, just like Lady Of Shalott, Tranquillity, my Princesses Anne and Alexandra, Emily Bronte, Poet's Wife, Queen of Sweden and Ancient Mariner. Luckily I have quite a few HTs and floribundas which are putting on a great show, not suffering too much from the heavy rain and dull skies. I think it must be the weather this year causing this lack of flowers. But I think all the experts say roses are greedy, so I would take their advice too. Your Amadeus is looking spectacular - I would be tempted if I had a suitable wall. Yes, Ab Fab /Julia Child is a lovely rose, as I am discovering. Penelope Lively - now that the initial enthusiasm/hysteria about a new rose is dying down, we are starting to be more sober and thoughtful in our judgement - it's still early days, but I am not convinced that it's going to be a classic. I've been hearing/reading good things about Chandos Beauty - any thoughts? I seem to remember you had/have one? I am hoping that the weather and our roses will perk up soon. Otherwise I'll have to invest in more dahlias!
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Год назад
Haha that made me laugh out loud at the end of your comment. Yeah the flowering situation is the strangest thing I’m not entirely convinced myself. That front lane has never looked so bare of roses that sadly is a fact. Going from first flush to second there is usually a good turnover with colour. I think perhaps many of the flowers just didn’t last as long and got cut away. And this may well be the case elsewhere in the garden. The odd thing is some of my potted roses that were eventually fed, look to be budding better and quicker for second flush than last year. But some of my roses just aren’t budding as Much or at all compared to last year around this time. So it’s confusing and I can’t work it out. But I do suspect the weather has played a part this year. Princess Ann a new rose and in the ground, poets wife again, there has been no sign of new growth at all. I’m surprised by this.

I honestly think the weather has had a huge part to play with our roses this year. I've fed mine and they're not as good as last years apart from a few that have done really well. Darren Harwood did a video ages ago from his friend's garden and she's almost ninety and has never fed her roses which made me think why do I bother! Donna is so funny and I have to say her patch is looking fab. Hope the rabbits don't get your new shoots. It's bloody squirrels here but I suppose I'm not helping by putting out food for the birds.

Hi Wendy yes you could well be right. It really is an odd year weather wise. Challenging conditions for sure. To make it more confusing some are doing better than last year but most aren’t doing as well. I’ve many roses 2nd flush isn’t evident at all. Some just weak growth for 2nd flush with just a few buds. Like I said in the video I hope the ones that aren’t performing above ground as yet, the roots are growing strong. And you never know it’s not even august yet so still time for a good display for both of us.

Agree, Penelope got a medium fruity fragrance for me and it reminds me A LOT of Munstead wood scent. I like the color and the flower looks cute, but nothing like on the website. I bought it because I like the Harlow Carr style buds paired with Boscobel like flower, but it's nothing like those two in real life.. Feeding - it really depends on the soil, some people plant it in heavy clay that holds the nutrients really well, some of my beds are way too sandy/rocky and my LoS shows signs of deficiencies even if I fed it in Spring! So I think the feeding is essential, I use cheap slow-release ( eracacious food from Wilko, £2 in Autumn on sale for 1 kg) and mulch with manure - this way you won't overfeed it and the nutrients are still there.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Год назад
Hi vorong, yes I was a little surprised at the flowers that have shown in my garden compared to the website. But I don’t look at that as a negative or positive. What I do like is it’s not the same pink as many other da’s. I think boscobel had bragging rights on that until now. But Penelope just offers something a little different which in itself I find appealing and the flower is lovely.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Год назад
Oh yes regarding the feeding youve seen my garden but when I show you my mums garden it kinda turns my garden on its head but she has more clay. Her garden is doing way better than mine. The million dollar question is would it have performed better with feed and mulch this year.

Hi Marilyn. Well there’s no chance of overfeeding this year:) yeah my initial flush i really don’t think the roses missed the feed. Hi there..I think it always depends on the soil, we have heavy Sand Soil, there would not grow any Rose if I would not feed them, clay or Loam is not so bad and the ones in potts get fed constantly…they can go nowhere else for nutrients…but I think they don’t need these heavy fertiliser’s, old Horse manure for instance really boost them well, i always buy it in pellets bags and they thrive…❤❤❤ Your wife is very funny…Roses are rubbish 😂😂 How is your lovely Greyhound doing..

I enjoyed that - along with your touches of humor. Re Uetersen, it's long been popular here in NZ and after observing it here closely, I've come to the conclusion that the ideal way to grow it is to allow it to spill over a fence. My neighbour grows it this way - 4 Uetersens planted behind his white picket fence. And they spill profusely over the fence and make a spectacular sight, especially viewed from the street. One question: what is your favourite red rose, which one do you really recommend?
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Год назад
Hi there glad you enjoyed. Uetersen yeah a beast. It doesn’t surprise me it grows well up a fence it certainly needs support. You can see the battle I would have moving mine back to the fence line ;) My favourite red, I have only a few true deep red roses. Deep secret is my favourite I have one a year bigger in the front that sadly wasn’t in flower. Not the healthiest rose but a strong grower superb powerful fragrance and flowers that last longer for me than say dark desire. However pure poetry not quiet as deep red but a new purchase that is doing very well indeed.

You are correct John. I was trying to think of another rose colour that matched Penelope when she first opens and that colour a 2 day old Gabriel was the closest I could think of. I imagined well established roses might not need feeding since roots are well grounded, but newer roses might need help especially if not started from bare root. For pots definitely need feed. My climbers have been repeating without feed.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Год назад
I suspect you are 100 percent correct. Your roses definitely looking better than mine. The roses on the lane last year were not without good strong fresh growth coming through. Gertrude’s also. This year nowhere remotely near as good. But having thought about it perhaps this year I have done a fair amount of premature dead heading of entire stems because of the extremes in weather. So maybe this is the reason more so than no food. Last year despite the drought I don’t recall cutting out entire stems. My potted roses definitely got hit without food this is clear. Even if not first flush then second flush they are completely dormant looking. With only Ab Fab doing well for second flush. A feed on my potted roses showed pretty quick results. I definitely won’t be not feeding them again :)

I’m surprised you say this. I’ve bought many getrudes over the past few years for me or others and the first year or two they can be weak and flimsy is my experience. James Galway on the other hand is a strong grower in my experience with thick sturdy growth. Health wise I have found James Galway to be average in my garden. Not unhealthy but neither a healthy rose. Gertrude’s for me have been towards the unhealthy side of that sliding scale. This is my experience.

I think the colour of Penelope Lively is very similar, if not identical to John Clare. John Clare is an outstanding rose in the warm climate of South Australia and it is prolific - equivalent to Iceberg in terms of flower production. PL has a much fuller shape with many more petals than John Clare however, JC being almost a semi-double flower.

0:27 Super nice shade of pink, of course the strong summer sun bleaches the blooms. When autumn arrives , the blooms will not fade. 5:47 Another element in hestitancy to fertilize plants is uncertainty if there is excess salt accumulation from previous feedings. I like thoroughly composted cattle, horse or chicken manure. THOROUGHLY composted, to the point that it will not sustain funguses. 6:40 Super globular form and and a deliscious orange sherbet color! 10:45 Possibly fertilizer accumulations from previous feedings? 23:00 Suoer nice orange color. 23:50 Yes, several days back I did that with my Chlotilde Soupert, excessive wet weather had the blooms balling, I gently rubbed a few of them and they quickly opened up. 24:10 I see that you are fond of orange roses, I have no orange roses at this time, my "to do list" next year, an orange rose. When deciding what roses to get, fragrance is paramount, I get fixated on fragrance, not quite giving much attention to color, and I end up with ANOTHER pink rose. It seems as if maximum frgarance is the domain of pink color. Your video here will help me decide which orange rose to get, thank you. A QUARTERED orange rose, with intense fragrance would be quite a special combination. 24:37 Super nice pink with a strong orange glow in it, I like what you say about fragrance.

Hi there, I will try and answer all of your points as best I can, but when I begin typing I can no longer see all of your comments. Penelope, yes this is a rose I like very much. Not too much like the photos on the da website and I tried to capture its colour aswell as it’s form as best I could and come across in a way that was perhaps balanced for different peoples tastes. But it is a rose I like very much. Certainly a ose that stands up in its own right. Yes the fertiliser, all of the roses potted and buried had a deep layer of plant based mulch put down in mid April I still think this was too late in the year. The yellow rose in the front is newly potted this year so has never seen feed other than the mulch I put down, but it’s still doing very well. Yeah orange is a strange one. The colour orange in itself doesn’t really faze me either way. Seeing an orange rose in a garden centre amongst all the other roses again doesn’t really stand out. But it appears you are correct. I’m not a fan of yellow exactly but the amber/orange roses in my garden look fantastic and a colour it transpires I’m drawn to in a rose. Like an accidental occurrence. But one I’m very pleased with. Spicy, Rosemary Harkness, Westerland etc all amongst my favourite roses. A great colour to notice from a window or whilst walking around the garden. Thank you for your comment ;)
@naturessidewithabhilash9380
Hey jay.. really sad to see.. how our plan back fired sometimes. You know what all i have learnt growing roses for almost 13-14 ( i was child back then , when i have started almost 10-12 years )years is feeding plays very vital role in growing or flowering in roses. If your plant is in ground and its become like a tree almost 6-7 years they will grow ny there known without feed they will do absolutely fine, But if plant is just a baby planted within one year they need proper feed to spread there roots that will boost plant to produce healthy flowers. But in containers just opposite if rose is new and we recently planted them they have fertile soil soo for temporary basis they will do better but we have to feed them until season ends, specially in old roses and stop fertiling before flowering season ends . Remaining nutrition will work for them. That's what i have follow every year i stop feeding them in mid march . After that they are in there own. Hope this will helps pls feed them if flowering season is still on..

I think your right with my roses my friend. Some good performing roses in my garden defo seem tired now compared to previous years. First flush I noticed little to no difference.
