Yes, I have a bad infestation of voles in my garden this year and they are killing plants right and left. To my despair, some are my precious roses. They are eating the roots down to nothing.
This method works for any rose you may have that is dying for a variety of reasons.
Here is how I saved one rose so far and hope to save another that has been ravaged even more. I will share that one again and show you whether it lives or dies. I show you the stub at the end of the video.

We have a vole problem as well, so I have had my husband make "cages" out of hardward cloth-basically a 12-inch "pot" made of 1/2" hardware cloth. I dig up the rose, and replant it in the "pot" underground. That way it's free to send out roots, but the voles can't get to the heart root. It's working really well!
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Год назад
thank you. That is great to know, I have been starting to do that as well and I have started putting in metal raised beds with the hardware cloth lining the bottom. They have started to eat all my oriental poppies, echinacea, and nicotiana and I had to get serious. I have found I am battling gophers and not voles. So far.

Hello! I am so glad I found your channel. I recently moved. And will like to take my rose bush with me. I live in Southern California. Currently fall. Spring should be arriving in about three weeks. When is the best time to dig it up and replant it? Thanks in advance.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
Right now would be a great time, pot it up and take care of it in the pot until you move. If you move and it is the hot part of the year (like Fall in Southern Calif.) you will want to prune it back hard, dig it up and pot up to move. The hard prune forces it to put energy into roots instead of blooms. Just be sure to keep it watered until it reestablishes, it you don't get rain. Which we haven't gotten for a month here in Northern Calif. These roses in this video were done mid-summer and they did great.

Hello! Great video, thank you for sharing! Would you recommend doing the same for a rose tree that has been damaged by japanese bettles?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
Well, I am not experienced with Japanese Beetles but what I have read it seems they don't eat the roots so I don't think so. This was damaged by the roots being eaten not the leaves. Japanese Beetle usually only cause cosmetic damage to the roses and it should recover if you keep it watered and fed (I love worm castings for this as they are never too strong and they add to the soil health as well). Sorry I couldn't be more help. Japanese Beetles have yet to arrive here but I am sure they will.

Voles are like rats that use gopher and mole tunnels to eat your plants from the bottom up. I also have gophers, so who the true culprit is up in the air. I am slowly moving all my roses to containers as I am losing the battle with the plant eating critters.

Great information! What would you recommend in my situation.... I live in South Texas. My rose bush has been significantly deprived of nourishment. It’s very leggy about 5ft tall but not healthy at all. Should I take it out of the ground or leave it, should I just cut all the way down to the bottom? And when? It’s winter now is there anything I can do now or do I need to wait?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 года назад
I am assuming you have mild winter weather. Right now, I would leave it in the ground, prune it back to knee high, prune out any crossing canes and cover the ground around it with a good 2 to 3 inches of good compost. Make sure it has plenty of water. Since you do not relate what type rose it is I can only give generic advice but with most roses the above steps will help rejuvenate it some.

Hi. We're now in hot July and I'm seeing there are rules against pruning during the summer. However, my rose bushes have literally lost all their leaves to black spot and mildew. The stems are still green. Should I prune them, fertilize them or leave them alone after cleaning up around the base?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
No need to prune, only dead head if needed. Just keep them watered and maybe give them each a cup of worm castings. Studies have shown worm castings encourage microbes in the soil that combat the fungal diseases in roses. Most nurseries and garden centers have worm castings. Plus the castings provide a mild feed too.

@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 2 года назад
It is hard for me to say but if that is how they treated it and it did well then I would go for it. So many factors play a part, like how long they watered it once a week, what is your climate etc. But it sounds like they watered deeply so it can go longer between watering as it has developed very deep roots. (very good strategy)

I transplant my DA climbing rose at the end of April, the stems starting to die since then. Out of desperation, I keep on fertilizing it and made further damage( I guess root burn?).Now I get only about one feet long branch live left, I feel the rose Is dying, will you suggest me dig it out and put in the pot like how you did?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
It is hard to say. But definitely stop fertilizing, as you probably have already figured out. There are so many variables that can effect the outcome leaving it in place. I can't hurt to go ahead and pot it back up and then you can control more, keep it in a cooler area until it recovers, maybe morning sun afternoon shade. Without a good root system it is hard for it to take up water and nutrients. Hopefully it is not too late. Wish I could be more help.

That depends, is it planted on its own roots or is it grafted. If it is grafted you can prune it hard and it will send out new shoots from the roots but if it is grafted then that won't work. Grafted roses do die off after 15 to 20 years but own root roses can live on.

It may be just transplant shock, losing leaves is not unusual right after transplanting. If the canes are still green and healthy just give it time. Be cautious not to over water as that can cause stress too. Losing the buds is also normal right after transplanting.

It just gives it a chance to put down some fresh roots without trying to stay hydrated in hot, direct sun.
