So the song is called "Malamente" which means "badly" and its basically Rosalia recalling quite a toxic relationship with an abusive man and she reflects on how she was "badly". The lyrics are quite poetic though and sometimes difficult to understand as it happens with most of her songs. But you can see in the video how she becomes the "bull" when riding the motorbike and going for the boys (bullfighters) who represent the toxic abusive and (I think) immature man. At the beggining of the video she is singing that she felt how a piece of glass cracked and that "she knew it would eventually crack" meaning that she predicted that this relationship was going to arrive to "bad" port? I guess. And then she goes onto saying how she also knew that before the glass hit the floor she knew it would break, and it indeed did break: when she gets hit by the car it represents how the relationship has been broken by abuse. She's playing with pure metaphors and symbolism throughout the whole song. Very clever. And I guess they already told you but the guy in that costume that seems the KKK is actually a "penitente" dress from holy week in Spain, nothing to do with that even though it looks exactly the same. I was so scared of them as a child :___) and they still freak me out tbh. She's using spanish folklore images and traditions to represent what she wants to say. I suggest you to watch more from Rosalía. This girl is truly a gem.

I would like to add as well that she bases her music on flamenco and that she mixes it with more modern kinds of music (more in her latest songs), which I think matches perfectly the video as well (as they mix tradition and, I guess you can call it, pop or urban culture). It's fun when students from the United States live in Spain, specifically in Andalusia and during Holy Week in Spain. When we explain them, they still do not believe it. In fact under those clothes there may be people of different races. Americans usually appreciate the meaning of things only in the context of the United States; Maybe that could bother people who know that it is older than the KKK and has nothing to do with what it represents.

The whole album talks about a relationship. A bad one. Is based of a book of the 14th century called 'Flamenca'. And every song is related to one chapter of the book. This song 'Malamente' (which literally means 'badly') is about chapter I, the 'Augurio' ('augury' or 'prophecy' in English), is about how the story starts for them. How he grows up in a very violent environment, that's why everything is very masculine (even the way the girls move and dance), and with a lot of violence (as Roman said, teaching bullfighting is related to teaching violence). Also, many comment explained it already, but just fiy, the skater in the purple robe has nothing to do with the kkk, is a 'Nazareno' which is a religious catholic penitent. During Holy Week in Spain many people dress up like this. Rosalia uses many traditional spanish, and spanish gypsy iconography in all her videos. Chapter II is about the wedding. The lyrics seems hopeful for the future, but the music is sad, some people even relate the music to a Funeral March. I recommend you guys watch Chapter III: 'Celos' (which means 'jealousy' in english), the song is 'Pienso en tu mirá'. At this point of the story they are married and she starts to see that everything she saw in him and his violent past it transforms into a very toxic relationship for them. The lyrics talk about a toxic and possessive relationship and how she escapes from it. And everything is sang by her but written as if he is the one telling the story. She says stuff like "I'm jealous of the wind that lifts up your hair, of the gold you wear because it's tied to your neck, even of the water you drink when it touches your lips", which is what he would say. Thank you for reacting to Rosalía 💜. As a spanish, I think the music video is reverting the Spanish stereotypes (bull fighting, catholicism, the colours...). Also that symbolism is connected to the lyrics and the message of the song: it's about an abusive and violent relationship, that's why the car hits her and she's being followed by a guy. Also, he's cleaning the bull fighters, but at the same time she's fighting with them in the motorbike scene..., It's like her own bullfight against an abusive relationship. ¡Gracias! 🇪🇸💘

This hole album is inspired by a book from the 14th century where a woman falls in love and marries a man that ends up abusing her. Every song represents a chapter of that book (called "Flamenca" by the way). "Malamante" is the first chapter and it's like a premonition of what's going to happen to her after she marries that man. All these bullfighting images are used to represent an intense but toxic relationship that will end up with one of them dead. I hope this helps non Spanish speakers to understand Rosalía's work a bit better :)
I have commented this video A LOT recently, because I like and admire this artist in se has become a fenomenon in Spain recently. I just also happens to come from Sevilla, and, being very familiar with all the references, I am still in shock with the way those images and symbols are combined in this video. To me, the most iconic and powerfull "found" object is the image of the skate boarder dressed as a penitent, riding the street in slow motion. For those non familiar with Spanish Easter imaginery, the ku Kus Klan like figure dressed in purple is actually the uniform of the Nazarenos, the penitents in the Easter parades, las procesiones de Semana Santa. I would not want to spoil any alternative interpretations or asociations, but the analogies between skaters and penitents, both fully invested to the point of phisical sacrifice ( hence the fakir-like nailed board) to their duty in a sort of absolute devotion to their duty is a pretty evident association. let me know if you find these comments interesting so I can keep diging for you in the particulars of this video.

I'm spanish and for me The song talks about a toxic relationship. The beginning represent the escene of a typical night when ''her man'' come to house so mad and she has to pay that in a bad way. You know.... [Translate the lyrics, you can feel the metaphors]. Then In an act of rebelion she wants to escape from that relationship. Because she knows he's bad for her. She's playing with pure metaphors and symbolism throughout the whole song. For example, the bull heads on the walls can be seen like a way to represent the woman that have died because of an abuser. Like the bullfighters do to the bulls(that tradition I dont like of my country). You can see at the beginning that she clean the body of him like a submission symbol. Then you can see a tattoo. That tattoo is Virgin Mary. That can represent the mothers model that feels pain for her son. And probably suffered because of his father and she dont want her son do the same on the future. It can also symbolize her (ROSALIA) and her unconditional love and pain towards him.When all the boys lifted Rosalia up with the machine inside the truck. It represents the view that male abusers have towards women. A simple merchandise or something without value. The next thing is the motorbike. Something they do to make her feel that he loves her. But its only a way to domite her. Well ,at the end of the video she wears a jacket with a draw. In that draw you can see the things that bullfighters use to kill bulls. So in that moment when she is on the motorbike she is fighting against him to be free. Its represented through the looks between them. At first she doesn't look at him but at the end she looks at him defiantly. Giving a meaning that she wins. Then the skater represents the view the boy wants to give her that he's modern but he really isn't.

This album is about a woman to marries this guy who becomes extremely jealous and ends up locking her up and abusing her. Its about her journey, how she was naive and became trapped. Then how she escaped, ans how she became powerful and fought for her life and liberty. And like I said, ALL FROM ANCIENT TEXT. Its crazy... @@KingChameleonsEye no, it's not. "Quillo" is similar than buddy, but not in a negative context. Everybody can be called "quillo" or "quilla" in south Spain. It's an andalusian colloquial expression ussed with a friend or a familiar even ussed in flamenco too.
The skater guy dressed in purple is a "penitente": a member of a religious society of Flagellants in Spanish-American communities of the southwestern U.S. (as New Mexico) who practice self-whipping and other forms of penitential torture particularly during Holy Week. The video shows a looot of religious cultural spanish things, maybe because of the Rosalía's "gypsy" style.
It represents a big part of the Spanish society which apparently seems to be modern (skateboard) or at least they.try, but actually since little kids they're trained to be sexist and follow very old fashioned rules and traditions (religion, penitence, bulls.. which define the most conservative Spaniard Standard) It is the revelation of her after a toxic relationship in which he seemed to be very open-minded but he just tried to control her in that sexist way and then she opened her eyes and defy him.

El Mal Querer (The Bad Love) is Rosalía's second album, whose theme is a toxic relationship divided into chapters from which a woman is victorious. The album is conceptually inspired by Spanish Renaissance art, an anonimous novel from the 14th century called La Flamenca, flamenco-trap music, pop and rap. On the cover of the album you can visualize Rosalia represented as a naked angel whose intimate parts are covered by her long hair and the lights of the sky and in her booklet contains several photographs of Rosalia paying homage to paintings of important half-naked women of the Spanish artist. Each song is a chapter of the story. "Malamente" (Badly) is the first track on the album, subtitled Chapter 1: Augurio. Augury is an omen, a feeling that something is approaching, in this case, a bad omen. In this first story, the girlfriend is perceiving the first signs of violent character in her boyfriend, who wants to appear to be "cool" and modern, but is very conservative and insecure (the boy dressed as Nazarene in the purple suit and on a skateboard is the union of that concept). On the other hand, the young woman, despite detecting something bad in that relationship, continues forward with the courtship, like a bull that enters the arena attracted by the color red of the mantle that the bullfighter holds, without suspecting that he could kill her in the end. Her almost maternal treatment with young bullfighters, justifying her boyfriend, protecting him, is a defense mechanism used by women to ignore the obvious latent violence. It is important to clarify that most of the songs are written from the woman's point of view, but not all. The persons goes hided in that dress, so he can go anonymous beside or in front of the sculpter. The people focused on the sculptor, and so not on the religious mens who goes beside the throne.
When you hear "quiyo" on the background that's an abbreviation of "chiquillo" (little boy) which we commonly use as "dude/mate" in the south of Spain (Andalusia).

I think the video was about a girl in a toxic relationship but she couldn't get away from him and when she tried to get away from him, car that ran over her were a inconvenience ( because of the lyrics) and she was "played" by him in Spain we say "torear a alguien" (torear comes from the word toro= bull) in another words would mean play someone or fool someone and she is the bull and her toxic boyfriend was the bullfighter. And the "kkk" purple costume is not racist, is a typical Catholic thing and the cross at the end was like a grave meaning that now that she is strong enough, she declares him dead.

She would be the bull (the victim) of the story. But in the end, she gets out of that toxic relationship, and she's a powerful motorcycle in contrast with the traditional bullfighter. From what I've heard, the whole album tells the story of a couple, their relationship and the domestic violence issue. This is the first song that tells the story of how they met. So I assume that the boys learning the bull fight might be how society tells young boys to control women and play with them. That's why the scene with her in the motorcycle. Not sure if that's the real meaning but I guess you were close to what they were trying to tell.
Actually they're trying to talk about toxic relactions and with the motorbike thing they transmit that she is facing him like in each picture she is in a higher position. And the bullfighter and all that typical spanish stuff is some kind of criticism and say that "her boyfriend" was so oldschool, so close-minded I think. GOOD VIDEO

It’s not KKK, we have a tradition in Spain (Rosalia’s country) during Easter called Semana Santa and people dress like that in parades (search it out of you want). They are called capirotes.
I love English/American music even I listen to it much more than Spanish,I just listen to Rosalía and a few more, which doesn't mean that I don't like it(Spanish music), I love it too but idk it depends on the genre too, rap,pop,trap, I've just wanted to explain to you hahh

She's trying to make flamenco heard more with touches of pop and other musical genres, and even she tries to achieve gender equality as a feminist,she's powerful and talented and transmits that to her songs.
