When I start getting rights and lefts and inconstant shooting I come back to this video. Rotations Draw is key. One point that is easily missed is that the string hand aligns you for the shot. MOE is the best.

That little thing about being to the left until full draw made a big difference. I had been aligning before the draw, rather than drawing into alignment.

Arne, I love all of your video's but this one has become my favorite. Your statement regarding the draw the shoulders leads the elbow follows really resonated with me, much like the statement on the phone "We open the bow". I cannot say enough about this one this one video has done more for me than all the stuff I have invested in to try to learn archery. I watch it constantly. Very good instructor! A 1000 thanks, Steve

I finally learned what getting into your back muscles feels like , if you have a high draw and come down and around you spine you can feel the back tension low in your back muscle , it is like flexing a muscle in your lower back, thank you Arne it is the only way I can find my back tension.

This is by far the best example for a starting archer to follow. Thank you Arne for that! The rotational draw is easy to understand and copy and makes you feel the right muscles. I'm doing it every day, with or without bow.

Easy to show especially in person but when you draw, there is a plane of force created, that plane wants to stay flat, and the point creating the plane is the string fingers' hook. Try this, draw, anchor then twist your string hand left then right. If you have a light grip on the bow, the bow will want to turn like a propeller. Same thing is true for the bow's orientation on the vertical axis. As the string hand come in to anchor, the bow will turn SLIGHTLY in the hand to allow the arrow to turn into alignment. the bow turning is a very small movement but you can see it in several of the shots in this video.

I was taught how to get into full draw into the bones. This prevents the pain u will get. Plus, Never raise the bow up above the plane of the shoulders and come back down. Many shooters do this and get sore. Great video Sir.

Keeping the string hand a few inches away from the chest, with the string hand wrist slightly convex seem to be key for me to accomplish the rotation into back tension and alignment. Thanks Arne

Hi Arne, I just want to say a big thank you for your instructional videos. I watched many others of all the talented archers around over the last year but watching your ones, especially the one about the rotational draw opened my eyes and the penny finally has dropped for me...

At full draw, the archer's draw elbow appears to be under rotated, with the forearm out of line with the overall direction of force. ie pointed far left of the target. The overall advice for a rotational draw is sound, but I think that this is actually where the modern index finger to the mouth anchor comes up short (literally) for many people with certain anatomical proportions. He's shaking badly because his arm muscles are still being overworked. Historical anchor points that are further back (but somewhat less convenient for aiming) fix that issue fairly readily.

This help my form a ton! Had a hard time getting the correct back tension, allowing for a straight elbow. This draw allows me to get to correct full draw with ease. Thank you!

well...... I you to shoot my old recurve really really well. things were different when I started shooting a hill "style" longbow, whats more I bought 60 incher. the consistancy at getting proper back tension and maintaining it was HARD. this draw had revolutionized the way a shoot. thanks.

Luft, Ich habe sehr kline Deutsch. High school German 50 years ago not much has remained. IF I understand correctly, you can see the small "down/up movement" to reach you final full draw position. The idea is that during the draw, the string hand (Die Zughand?) moves in a slightly high to low motion. That is what helps use the back for the draw then, while maintaining your back and shoulder position the string hand is lifted slightly to anchor. Sorry my German isn't good enough to fully understand your question or statement.

Wasn't really trying to show stance and posture, just the mechanics of the draw. My feet are shoulder width apart, and open to the target at about 20 degrees. Hips inline with the feet and then a twist in the torso to line the shoulders up with the target.

Not sure why you think the arrows are too short, they were used specifically to give a point reference on the bow so you could see whether there was a collapse. Also see my response about the shaking on the other "grouping" video.

So as I raise bow hand, it's just left of target? The string hand brings bow into target? I began doing this. Want to be sure I got what you said. Hope you do more teaching on line.

Hello Arne, you are the only Archer out that mentions about the way the bows turns when you hit full anchor. I have the best consistency when I draw the way you demonstrate but always thought I was doing something wrong as I never heard any other archers mention about the way the bow turns, if you draw with your arm away from your body of course it's going to turn. Thank you for confirming this and a great video.

Thanks John. Many don't realize the connection between the rotational draw and the dynamics of how the bow works. But IF you use a rotational draw, the bow must be allowed to turn IN the hand and not by the hand turning.

I follow Jimmy Blackmon a lot , I think he is brilliant but he does not mention it either. I've just watched all of your videos, all brilliant. You explain everything so well, it's almost like you anticipate what novice archers are thinking and the questions they're asking whilst watching your videos. If you get chance please make some more but thank you for what you have already done. Helped me so much :)

Hello, Arne, Thank you! I watch this video often as a reminder of the rotational draw. Since you are using a longbow for this video. I would like to ask what is your take on that bows "stability" VS a recurves stability. I am not a good enough archer to understand the stability statement. By the way whenever I see you have commented on a post that I am following I immediately go see what your comment is. It's like the old commercial when EF Hutton speaks people listen. Thank you

Thanks for the kind comments, don't think I've seen that comparison before. :>)) I too struggle with the common talk about both "stability" and "forgiveness." Except in the rare case of a REALLY poorly tillered bow, I find that all bows shoot well. Maybe what many refer to is when they as the shooter are trying to MAKE the bow conform to them rather than THEM conforming to the bow. That is allowing the bow to do it's job. I see no real difference between a long bow and a recurve, maybe I'm not good enough either?

videos are very helpful. i seem to have trouble with my bow arm, i get the rotation on the drawing arm on to my back but i'm stuck with bow arm, pressure coming up into the muscles bellow my neck and back of my shoulder and front of my shoulder. could this be because my front shoulder is not back and is coming forward all the time? any help would be appreciated, as i'm in the UK, mostly shoot English recreational longbow, sometimes one piece recurve. i have had to drop Bow weight right down as I am suffering with this front shoulder, Sean

A little hard to answer without seeing what you are doing. Have you taken a look at the "bow hand/ bow arm" video I did? As the draw starts, the bow shoulder and arm are static and should not move or take strain on the muscles, it's all bone support.

ok I think I may need to drop my bow hand and concentrate on setting my shoulder. I have been doing more of a swing draw but I think I will try it your way by setting the shoulder keeping it back and down as I think when I swing up my arm and shoulder are coming forward

I'd suggest that you learn to keep the shoulder down and back first using what I show in the videos. Once you have that you will find that a swing draw is fully compatible. Sounds like right now you are letting the shoulder ride up as you "swing" up. Learn shoulder position first then apply to swing.

Bob Joswick , YES! The follow through is a reaction to the shot. You hold the weight of the string with back muscles and on the bone structure; so when the string goes the string hand naturally recoils to the shoulder or the air behind your ear. It is something that happens, not something you do.

One question I have on the rotational draw is: Does the "expansion to conclusion" motion trigger the release (conscious letting go of the bow string) or does the expansion motion surprise you when the string fingers can no longer hold the string during that motion? Michael MacDonald the release should be a surprise not a conscious act. Release just happens during expansion.

Just a bit of semantics in the form of a question, but I notice that I struggle greatly to hit anchor when I think rotational draw rather than what appears to be more of an angular movement of the elbow as you pull the string to anchor. A bit of fuzzy logic is that the smaller rear deltoid is not nearly as strong as the inner larger back muscles. Have you wrestled with this at all? Excellent videos and descriptions.

Nic, rotational draw or angular draw are just variations of the same thing. I have progressed to liking the "angular draw" description best. the string hand and forearm comes straight in on about a 45* angle to your loading position. Yes, pretty much semantics.

sorry for the slow response. been fighting with Google about my password. Watch the video carefully, see how my drawing arm starts out high and moves slightly down during the draw? That's what I mean. This is a LEARNING technique to get your back tension as low in the back as possible. Once you gt that FEEL, you can achieve it many different ways but to start do it this way.

Are you saying that when drawing the bow your string arm elbow should be no higher than your shoulder and if it is you will be using shoulder muscles that do not exist.

No, I'm saying that the drawing motion should be in a downward direction/angle. IF, the motion moves in an upward direction, you are trying to use muscles that are above your shoulder. In other words, you are drawing into weakness, rather than strength.

Arne are you standing 90 degrees to the target when you use the rotational draw? I am having trouble learning the rotational draw, please answer my question I need all the help I can get.

Cliff, I standing about 30 degrees open to the target. But, I often start new folks square to the target. Part of the draw advocates a twist of the upper body into alignment. It gets core strength involved. The rotational draw is quite difficult for many, initially, and MOST need to spend some time with an NTS coach to learn it. It's really not that hard but it's difficult to read or watch instruction and then actually translate that to the actual shot.

toxy1948 I explained that those last shots were my version of the swing draw. And that you could shoot fast or slow with the rotational draw. I was just demonstrating the fact.

Arne Moe yes you did explain it very well. I am experiencing Target Panic where I cannot let go of the string smoothly, it is herky-jerky or a pluck. About 5 out of 10 shots are good shots. I know I'm probably overthinking it. I used to be pretty good at 3D archery and field but not now

Versteh´ich leider nicht: "string becomes slightly below anchor and then straight up to anchor..." Die Zughand ist doch bis zum Lösen an die Sehne gekoppelt, da rührt sich doch rein garnichts ?? "Down and up..." Ich sehe da kein "down and up"...

good vid, just a couple things wrong i saw. first the arrows are to short and also looks like he is shakeing at full draw this is most likely due to pulling to much weight and is not comfortable enuff to hold anchor

No need to get defensive your a fine coach. I'm just simply stating nobody taught, explained proper back tension better, & simpler than Al. By simply concentrating on keeping the elbow back the student executed proper back tension without ever knowing it. Sometimes Al would never even tell them because it was ingrained already & no need to muddy the waters. There a million videos on BT & none are close to his teachings. Maybe incorporate his teachings with yours for better results? Again no disrespect intended!

Too complicated, just concentrate on keeping your elbow back @ anchor then keep muscles active like stretching a spring until explosion. That's from the best coach ever Mr Al Henderson!

What's your point Chris?? If you are lucky enough to work with Al Henderson, why are you trying to put one coach's technique against another???? If you don't like what I suggest, then just go with what you do like, no worries. Frankly, it is not too complicated, just another style that is proving to work well in currently high competition circles.
