John Ross to be fair, I don’t fly rotorcraft, but I’d guess he’d done a thorough check on a previous flight to this spot. He didn’t spend very long warming the engine which suggests it was already hot. I usually do a quick walk around and check the prop for chips and away if I’ve only been on the ground for 10 minutes. But I would have definitely landed in the field across the road away from the traffic.

While FAA may not have a whole lot to say on where you land your helicopter, it's a lot of liability landing on property open to the public (especially in an area where people aren't expecting helicopters). There's a high chance of injury/property damage.

There's so many wrongs with this video I dont know where to start.. #1 never hover around that close to the ground. You'll damage the engine by kicking up particles. #2 You kick up particles that then hit the rotors and cause damage. #3 Disenguage the rotor before starting the engine. It easier on the starter and flywheel.. #4 Stay away from traffic, power lines, trees.
@benfredrickson4910
@benfredrickson4910 5 лет назад
Anthony Williamson I was wondering about that startup. I thought you weren’t supposed to start it with the clutch engaged. Definitely did not seem very good for the engine.
@michaelhumpherys1577
@michaelhumpherys1577 5 лет назад
First thing, that hover is perfectly fine. As a pilot in a R22 in the past, the normal hover is 3-5 feet off the ground, this compares to the R22 in size. Damage the engine due to particles?? what do you mean by that statement?? it's not a turbine engine, ie, Turbo fan, turbo jet or any other form. I assume this engine has a air filter so no damage there. particles are blown away from the rotor not into it, guess you don't know how the lift is created in a helicopter. Look up Bernoulli's principle as it applies to lift. Yes FOD (Foreign object damage) can occur with rocks and such, but its pertaining mainly to turbine engine damage as I mentioned above, not to rotors. Yes he should have disengaged the CLUTCH assuming its not direct drive which seems unlikely. If everything you said is correct then my FAA school, examiners and my military experience in aviation in the desert surrounding in rocks and dust is wrong.... How did we ever survive??

@rodrob9280
@rodrob9280 7 лет назад
you are correct, seems very hard on the rotor, as when starting up it sends irregular pulses of energy and it will probably wear the teeth out precociously, maybe other parts will wear out due to this operation as well. My understanding is that is should be a smooth transition of energy when engaging the clutch as other choppers do.

@channell11
@channell11 4 года назад
The FAA doesn't have much to say about where you land a helicopter (once you're on the ground you're someone else's problem) so you can generally land anywhere as long as it isn't prohibited airspace, you can do so safely, and you have permission of the property owner. Landing/taking off where he did mostly presents a liability issue for property damage (rotors can kick up rocks and damage vehicles) and safety-since there's no barrier to prevent someone from walking right into the takeoff/landing area.

I’m not a Rotorway guy, but I know that had to be an improper start procedure, and, improper pick up, popped it straight up, I’m not trying to be an armchair pilot, but there is something to a two part pick up. I don’t think that using good risk management landing at a off airport landing without anyway of keeping onlookers from getting too close, that truck got way too close. Yes, we’re helicopters, we can do cool stuff, we can land about anywhere, but we have to use good risk management, I would’ve set it down across the street at the field and walked across the street. We have to mitigate our risks every second we fly, how can we mitigate that risk.
