Hey Donnie, Rough Rider actually have a Bowie called the Black Mule and it's next to nothing for you guys to buy in the States. It's a game changer for cheap Bowie's. True full tang with an overmold handle. Very like another Bowie you like and own😁
Rough Rider's fixed blade quality has always been hit or miss which is odd cause their folders are usually at least solid. If you haven't already, give a peek to their Black Mule Bowie. For about $25 or so, but they did it right.
I know a lot of people like stacked leather handles. The problem is, you never know what's going on inside that handle to the end cap. Frankly, I'm surprised the Rough Ryder hidden tang was a big as it was. I susoect if the knife was made out of carbon steel, it wouldnt have had a problem. All that said, I'll take a full tang knife over stacked keather always. It may be less comfortable, but you know it'll be strong, depending on the steel type.
Every fixed blade I own regardless of price is full tang and you have just showed off the reason, and I do have some cheap plus some good. Check out Chipaway Cutlery or United Cutlery their Bushmaster series.
I test like you test and I freely admit you greatly influenced my testing style. Not the street sign or busting cinder blocks. But like you I want people to know what the hell they bought
That's why I promote you so willingly. You're worth the subs. I did smash a few bricks with some blades in these vids, but have yet to stab a street sign! haha
Wow! Honestly I didn’t think It was going to break right there. Lol. Well looking knife but like you said, display only lol. Thanks DBAD and happy thanksgiving to you too
It's sad to know that some of these nice but cheap blades are made more for decoration then for practical use. You have taught us a very important lesson today my brother, keep it up and turn that broken thing into a badass design of a knife!!
Had a feeling that was going to happen. Broke a very similar stainless bowie when I was young. Learned quickly to be suspicious of anything that big being made of it ever since. I don't do rat tails hardly at all except maybe a ka-bar here or there.
It's the combat Bowie with iwo jima on it bc the original design is the V44 used during ww2 by Marines as a Cross between a machete for terrain and a kabar for combat.
I have a Rough Rider USMC Bowie RR749, which is pretty much the same as your RR1718 (except it has a USMC marked leather sheath.) I bought it at a swap meet for $35, and was thrilled to get it. It sits in a place of honor with some other USMC knives (mostly Ka-Bars.) There is no reason these couldn't have been made super strong even with the hidden tang, as the prototype (called the Union Cutlery 1219C2) was required to have 1/3 of the knife imbedded into a tree and a full grown man would stand on it without causing damage. Many many a Marine or Soldier would throw them and they were known for their toughness. But alas these Rough Riders were built for show, one day I'd love to build one that is as durable as the Ka-Bar fighting utility knife, or maybe even a tad stronger. It would have a market already in place...
Check out the Rough Rider 1643 Coffin handled bowie. It has micarta scales and is full tang. I love mine and it costs about the same as the one you are showing in the video.
I don’t understand why people insist on judging a knife based on batoning. It’s ignorant. That isn’t what a knife is for, and even full tangs can break doing this. This knife would have never broken if used for it’s intended purpose (you know, cutting). There is nothing wrong with stick tangs either. Swords and knives were made like this for thousands of years, and they functioned just fine. Probably also had something to do with people using their tools properly.Fresh bone is easier to cut through than knotted wood. Anyone worth their salt that goes into the wilderness is going to at least have a hatchet, or an axe on them for wood. Maybe even a saw or a machete. Yet even those will still break if used incorrectly. We going to shit on guns next, because they suck at processing wild game?
Correction; GOOD stick tangs work. A garbage heat treat or poor tempering will leave you with a snapped or bent tang any day of the week. Also, batoning is a form of cutting. If I swing a blade with all my might to chop a piece of wood, it can damage the knife at a greater probability than by batoning. When you baton, the angle is set and consistent, unlike a wild swing. Who do you think invented the technique? Survivalists have been doing it for thousands of years. Reduce the chance of edge chipping and dullung.
Sheath looks like Turd-le Mans thunder Bowie 👍🏻🇦🇺 this Bowie would be bloody awesome if it was made out of better materials because it’s a nice looking knife 🔪
Have you checked out the new RR Bowie Vaquero Mexican? I just got mine yesterday and it is an awesome design, in spite of it being made in Pakistan. I think it might be right up your alley, perhaps a better fighter than a chopper.
The only Rough Rider i buy is the pocket knives for food prep. And China only of course, the Pakistan knives are all together crap! 😬 Thanks for testing this!
The original Bowie was an all purpose blade. A defense blade first and foremost, but an important tool while on the trail. On horseback you don't bring everything with you. A camp roll, firearm, metal cup or pot, a flint and a knife. That knife was for fighting, firewood, hunting, fire starting and food prep.
Ya your kabar would have cut right threw that and it's a rat Tang Western Bowie what I like and have that was a good video you did back in the day. From Glenn CATT.
Oh my God that sheath is so loose it's like my girlfriend kicking a hot dog down a hall way what the Fuck maybe it's just me . Happy Thanksgiving hope you got a laugh . Good video nice job. From Glenn CATT.
Depends on the knife really. But if you want a great combination of both, look up the dbad OEF Defender. It's at www.thekhukurihouse.com and I did a video on it that you can actually see when you pull up the knife.
@@DonnieBAllDay thank you! will surely check it out. Had a ka bar kukri on my shopping list but bought an Estwing carpenters hatchet for my tool set instead.
I have what I suspect is a Rough Rider USMC Bowie and probably exactly the same tang as this one, but it stays in the living room on a plaque and probably will never see any use, but go through life as a revered Ka-Bar style Bowie knife! I have a Warivo made 18" Crocodile Dundee style knife however with a hidden tang (like the original) and if it breaks I'll do something rash, like pay a knife-maker to repair it and try to improve on it... and of course bitch til the toasty shores of hell frost over!!!
Great video brother the knife looks nice but it’s not a dbad knife by far , by the way the he game of thrones throne is made of swords melted together !
This is the knife that you use to carve up the Thanksgiving bird after you burn it accidentally because I guarantee you nobody is going to complain while you have that knife in your hand.
@@DonnieBAllDay Well stainless steels aren't really designed for impact toughness, when you go over 14% Cr even the best stainless is dangerous to baton with.
@@DonnieBAllDay Not when it comes to limitations in different grades of steels. This is why you would never find engineers using stainless steel to make vehicle leaf springs, and why jack hammer heads and crow bars are never made out of stainless steel. It's not safe and wouldnt pass safety regulations because Cr makes steel brittle and prone to fracture under impact and stress.
@@DonnieBAllDay If you want to look at it in more simple terms, ask yourself why aren't any functional swords made out of stainless steel, because when stainless steel (With high enough level of martensite to hold an edge) is made into a long thin object it is not safe to use with high impact hard use. The heat treat on S35VN can be the best in the world done by crucible themselves. But if you make a sword out of S35VN it's going to shatter.
