Autumn Has Arrived at Whitby right on time this year. Today its cold, wet and just a little bit stormy on the North Sea.
For the past few years its been very strange here with the weather patterns bucking the trend in my observation.
Over the years Ive lived here, that's 51 now, I would say that by far the majority of autumns come with weather conditons like those we are witnessing this weekend, but for the past four or five years its been surprisingly calm, and warm and the wind direction has generally stayed out or south west which has meant the sea has generally been calm too.
I guess those conditions are fine if you like boring calm mild autumns, but my preference is for stormy seas, cold winds and chilly nights. Lets hope its back to the normal pattern then.
Yesterday at times it was difficult to stand up. I guess that shows in the shaky footage. But Im sure you'll agree that the stormy seas are a sight to behold. The shear power of the sea is at times bewildering and you can be sure that if you ever ended up in there it would certainly never be a happy ending.
Yesterdays tide was a 4.5m need tide which meant the water was barely coming to the cliffs here at Whitby. Had this storm occurred on last weeks spring tides of 6 metres plus then we might have seen a bit more damage. The beach huts had a lucky escape, and the new sea defence wall on pier road still hasn't had its test.
I get the feeling it might be a slightly different autumn and winter this year. here's hoping for some real winter storms and some awesome scenes to photograph in the weeks and months ahead of us.
