I have had this for about 18 months and used it to dismantle dozens of pallets both easy and difficult. Is this a useful tool or just another waste of workshop space?
Also available cheaply directly from roughneck here: amzn.to/2TDaMi9

To be honest, the pallets with solid wood spacers are a fair bit harder IMO. If you hit them with a lump hammer, they hold the nails and split the wood rather than fall off. At the point at which SCW got the back off, I think he'd have done better knocking the nails back out with a hammer on their points.

Thank you for this video, I just bought one of these tools but wasn't sure on the best way to go about using it correctly ( preserving the actual timber struts intact ) so this guide to breaking a pallet up was really useful for me. Really practical guide!

THE best review of the roughneck pallet pry bar. I have taken apart a few pallets now, and for the time used, and wood gained, it can be sometimes just as cheap to buy new. I have clients that love recycled wood though, so need to keep things cost effective. I appreciated that you picked a tricky pallet to do the demonstration. Gonna go and collect some pallets and get me that Roughneck from Toolstation/Screwfix

I've picked up some pallets from a company called Selco, a big trades only company. These places always want to get rid of pallets as they have to pay for them. I picked up a bunch of 2-way pallets. Outer wood is 750mm width 300mm thickness. Inner wood sections 750mm width 450mm thickness. Wood seems solid, I've split two of the four pieces as I was using a pry bar and hammer, I've ordered one of these for tomorrow collection. I saw someone using it on pallets that looked exactly like the ones I have. Hoping the work will go from 5-10 minutes per slat to 30s-1m per slat, meaning I break a pallet down in around five minutes.

@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 It did :). Admittedly it was my first pallet but it took me about half and hour to pull one pallet apart. I got about half way through the second before it started raining. Picked one of these up from Toolstation and broke two and a half pallets down in about 20-30 minutes. That included using a hammer and pry bar to remove the nails from the planks. Gluing the planks together to make walls and floor for my cold frame. Cheers.

Wood metal blade in reciprocating saw. Cut between slats and blocks. Centre punch nails out.
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490
Hi David, I have tried this several times and concluded that it does not really work, if you simply cut through a tight joint you are effectively cutting through a 4x4 wood block to get to the nails, very time consuming even with a multi material blade. The only way I found worked was to open the joints with a flat chisel first so that the blade cuts the nails direct. This amount of effort was more than some other methods. I actually found that using the chisel to chop straight through the nails was faster, though this does require a good hammer arm and a sharp chisel but it is quick! best of luck!
@davidsaunders3212
@davidsaunders3212 Год назад
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 Thanks for reply. I don't seem to have much of a problem getting between the joint or shaving the block. I was only hoping to save your slats in their entirety. Either way I wish you the best of luck in the future Sir.

Pallets are a son of a bitch to demolish while trying to keep all of the slats intact! It took 3 me 3 hours to break one apart using just a hammer and my roughneck utility bar, because the idiot pallet makers hammered the tip of the nails flat against the timber on the other side, and they'd since rusted...
