Gday, this is the finally video on the modification to the column of the mill, I did do this all off camera simply because I didnt want to bore you guys with similar content, I really hope you dont mind but please let me know in the comments if it has, in the end the modification worked and repeats within .002", this is plenty good enough for the work I do, please enjoy the video and thanks for watching, Cheers

Nice explanation, presentation and nice design approach. Your solution has something others don't; compactness. Others take scads of space, making them intrusive, huge in dimension, and then, considering the size of the contraption, not very rigid. Your approach if it was beefed up a bit more would still be very reasonable yet there would be significant rigidity.

Hi Matty, thanks for the design. I was thinking getting a mill/drill with round column but issue was the head movement when milling. This design surely overcomes that. The workspace is far more than a normal knee mill.

@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop 3 года назад
Nice work Matty, 1.5 thou is not bad at all. I was thinking about your plastic bushing, and the two adjustment holes - you could add tapped holes above and below for one of them, on the back one maybe. This would replace the single central hole, meaning you have good three point contact on the straight piece, it should hold on to it better with less play. Think of using a thumb and two fingers to hold something instead of a thumb and one finger.

metal work is always very impressive. I live in a world of 2 by 4 s. A square cut is a fee handed cut with a circular saw, experience makes it perfect 9 times out of 10 and that one off cut....well, tradition says you blame your friend for that and then tell him not to worry because we needed fire wood anyway. One comment I'd make Matty is I would turn the rectangular bar 90 degrees to give the greatest rigidity against rotational flexing, and personally I'd dump the plastic bush and tig braze three bits of brass rectangular stock, then machine it to the same as you made the plastic block and use the three point adjustment suggestion. ( easy enough if you don't make the brass too thick)

@tonywilson4713
@tonywilson4713 2 года назад
@@MattysWorkshop There's a very simple reason why this has been an improvement and when I had a quick look around all the others doing this sort of mod also did as you first did. If you have a look right in your last short and consider how the beam is being loaded when you mill its actually being bent NOT twisted. If you throw in a milling cutter and start winding the X-axis then the head is trying to twist around the column against the load on the cutter. Which is fine because a round profile resists twisting. But the vertical beam you have added is not on the center line of the column its out on a radius. So the load it is getting is at right angles to the radius just like when you put a spanner on a nut. You don't twist the spanner you push on the end. So that vertical beam you have added is under a BENDING LOAD. Tubes and solid round are great for twisting (as in torsional loads) but suck at bending. Rectangular sections are great for bending loads and lousy for twisting. SO just by switching from a circular to a rectangular section you have made the mill stiffer. You'll find that if you do another mod and turn that bar 90deg about its center and put the wider side against the bending load it should make the mill even stiffer.
@TERRYB0688
@TERRYB0688 2 года назад
Hi Matty, have been watching you for a while but I’m in the process of buying one of these mills and your solution is by far the best, just wonder why you never used a round bar, would there have been more flex in it !!
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop 2 года назад
Gday Terry, the round bar had to much flex I found, if I was buying this mill again I would certainly buy the square column not the round, I have found the round column isn’t as rigid as it looks in my opinion, the belt drive is a good thing but having a gearbox would be a lot better to, hope this helps mate, Cheers
