I have a methodology question/recommendation for future videos. the traffic test map has 8 incoming highways. For a four-directional system interchange splitting them 2-2-2-2 seems reasonable, but for a service interchange I feel 3-3-1-1 might be a more realistic split. If the dogbone is struggling with through-traffic here, that's bcs it wasn't designed to handle as much in that direction. Personally, I love the "single bypass", or as I like to call it, the two-level roundabout. Mostly because it can be an extremely compact service interchange, which is easy to build and doesn't require me to set up traffic lights.

This kind of dumbbell interchange is one of the most common service interchanges I've seen off of highways in my region of Brazil. I've seen a few dogbones in urban areas, I think. The exits and entrance lanes are squished close to the highway to save on land area, though. The other most common type (besides "eyes" where you have to cross a side of the highway to get to the other and is only used for very low demand, like ranches and small villages) is the cloverleaf. Brazil has tons of area, so we make tons of cloverleafs.

If anything, I feel this shows how shoddy the vanilla traffic AI is. Cars are waiting unrealistically long to enter the roundabout. (Just pick a random car and watch it sit there for ages) Also the roads tying into the roundabout should have a more sweeping angle on the outer lanes, for smoother entry.
@edwardhurley4941

Also in the bypass roundabout interchange there were a lot of cars that would use the roundabout to keep going straight in the highway direction instead of just staying on the highway.

Impressive video as always, loved the parclo-roundabout. Here in the South UK (which is really heavily congested, and very limited on space) nearly all of our traditional roundabouts now have traffic lights! Although that sounds bizarre, it works very well. Roundabouts work well up to medium throughput, but is always bad on unbalanced intersections, and yielding eats up time. Lights have the advantage of no yielding, but multiple directions create long wait times. By merging the two, you have a single direction of travel, no yielding, and control of unbalanced intersections. From some directions you may get a double stop, before and on the roundabout, but usually (on the heaviest route) you can sail through. Love the channel , keep up the good work.

I thought it funny when you suggested making the roundabout "unrealistic but functional" by adding a 4th lane. There's a fair few around here with 4+ lanes, most not even on the motorways! The M40/A404 roundabout splits in half and comes back together, giving it effectively 5+4 functional lanes, with the motorway still bypassing it underneath. If it's complex but works, it probably does exist somewhere in Europe!

I think the dog bone/ dumbbell option is the perfect solution for low-ish density areas IRL - we have both dumbbell and simple traffic light ones in my area, roundabouts are just nicer to use from a drivers perspective but once the traffic starts to ramp up they can't handle the traffic at all it's simply annoying to wait on a red traffic light in the middle of the night or speeding up / slowing down to try and catch the green phase in general

The Parclo-Double Roundabout has become sort of a theme in a lot of German smaller cities where Autobahn intersections need to work around existing roads to optimize traffic flow. Add a couple roundabout bypasses for straight across connections and you eliminate the need for a multi-lane roundabout. My city built one like those for their central highway intersection and it works flawless.

The majority of highway junctions in South east Qld, Australia are dumbbell style. Of course once space becomes limited it's traffic lights. But as someone whose spent their whole life here, I was surprised to see that's not really the majority. I think I first worked that out when searching for pre built interchanges on the workshop and being completely baffled by all of them.

The roundabout debate carries on.... like a roundabout... with no exit. These kind of roundabouts are quite common in the UK for motorway junctions. Or they have a very oval shape instead. But helps too when we don't have a billion cars per person all heading to the city centre down a 5 lane highway :P

@MrBigPauly1
@MrBigPauly1 2 года назад
Honestly, i would give it another try with proper lane math, by that i mean, each entry to the interchange wants one of three things: go right, go straight, go left. Pretty much same logic as the number of lanes in a turbo roundabout should be the amount of exits minus one cause you shouldnt use a main system interchange to do a u turn. So i think there's a lot of optimization to be done in this reward with all the interchanges you've made, and i would like a video trying this out. Also, just as another idea worth testing, i would use the overpass in the parclo roundabout to merge the left turns from the highway with the traffic from the avenue instead of using the roundabout to do it, might make it a bit better and a bit 'safer' so assimetric 3-2 overpass with 3 lanes entering from the roundabout and 2 trying to enter each roundabout.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
The through traffic (center) lane stacks up.
@MrBigPauly1
@MrBigPauly1 2 года назад
@@YUMBL Yeah, i just meant that the unification (if that's a word) of the turning left from highway with the straight through from the avenue would look cooler if it was done on the bridge instead of on the roundabout, my reasoning is that drivers are better at 'zipping' 2 lanes when they are parallel than when its on a roundabout, personal expirience, some people suck at incorporating themselves onto roundabaouts and need 2, 3 or even 4 car slots to merge in, while most people on parallel merging need 1-2 car slots. Of course in CS cars, especially trucks seem to only need 0.1 slot to zipp in since the basic rule of physics that two different objects cannot occupy the same place at the same time doesnt seem to be hold to decent standards XD In any case, i guess i was a bit confused and didnt get the 2 lane throughtput that you were going for on the avenue, but then imo the avenue needs to be 4 lanes, so you have 2 throughput 1 left and 1 right. I'm not sure of anything to be honest, by my intuition is telling me there's something i would do different with these intersections and it doesnt seem to me that it has reached perfection, dont know why. But yeah, i can see now what you were going for and i understand it better, its not what i thought was happening, so my bad. Fun fact, the roundabout in the system interchange (double bypass) is only for turning left, so you could make it go clockwise for funsies, also with some extensive use of intersection marking tool and cutting 'corners' nicely i think you could end up with a new flower interchange. Looking more into it, correct me if im wrong, but it would also make it a tiny bit more efficient, since traffic going counter clockwise has to 'put up' with 2 other lanes entering, but going clockwise they only have to put up with 1, if im not missing something.
@misterflibble9799
@misterflibble9799 2 года назад
The issue with the Bypass Roundabout seems to be that you have three lanes aproaching from the top and bottom, and yet almost all the "straight ahead" traffic is using the middle lane. The left lane is almost entirely empty, despite the fact that traffic could be using it to go straight ahead. The left lane on the roundabout itself underneath the bridges is similarly empty. The "minor" roads approaching the roundabout might as well be two-lanes on each side, and still carry the same traffic. Never played the game (forgive me, but YT algorithm sent me here...), so I don't know whether it's down to the setup or just the in-game's traffic modelling algorithm.
@Excalibaard
@Excalibaard 2 года назад
Very common to see dogbone/dumbbell interchanges in the Netherlands as well. It's mostly used when traffic is very biased towards one side of the interchange (for example a small city on one side, rural area on the other) and a bias towards one direction on the main road (for example commuting to a larger city nearby). With almost no cars flowing through this as an overpass or coming in from the other side of the main road it's a very small/cost-effective way to connect all directions. When I encounter these it's very rare that another car is coming in and I have to give way. The dumbbell part is on the side of the city, often combined with a carpool, or just to allow people to make a u-turn without going through the entire thing. You could give it the partial cloverleaf treatment and have one exit for both entry/exit lanes. That is commonly done here in order to provide a way to connect a small industrial or carpooling area as close to the highway as possible, instead of two sides to enter the roundabout.

These were my starter highway exits when I started building my own interchanges. The first two are easy to build and work in vanilla. I built a very similar double bypass roundabout in a vanilla build some time ago. I expected problems with it but it pretty much ended up being the least problematic interchange in that build. Part of that was I also wanted it to be an exit but it was a little too much so they had to exit somewhere else.

One thing hurting your Bypass Roundabout is that some of the left-right highway traffic is using the roundabout to continue on the highway (car followed by truck at about 6:28 do this from left to right). Not sure how much of an actual impact it's having, but it's definitely not helping!

I don't know if you ever noticed or if anyone pointed it out, but the reason the single bypass failed so hard was because the on-ramps and the roundabout had the same speed limit as the bypass. You can see that cars are lining up on the on-ramp only to get right off and back to the highway they left. Since we know pathing is based on the fastest route, I don't think the cims are being deterred from using the roundabout to make the wiser choice of staying on the bypass.

Here’s a suggestion for Yumbl: How about making a variant of the dog-bone parclo at the end, with a couple of slight changes. 1. Get rid of the dog-bone. 2. The highway off ramps section splits into one going under the arterial and one going up. Where it goes up to the arterial, make it bi-directional as well. 3. Connect the newly bidirectional section to the section that goes under the overpass in a similar manner as the “parclo” loops connect to it. Prevent all left turns on/off the interchange and you have a fairly free flowing service interchange. (You may need to adjust the lane mathematics to optimize the flow rate.)

Where I live we have a something very very similar to what you did with the double-bypass roundabout including slip-lanes, underpass and overpass. The only difference is that the overpass is for one direction only (in our specific case it's the correct decision I think). Oh and being in an urban area we also have a pedestrian "underpass" on the ground level, what is your case is the highway it's set as an underpass which is under the pedestrian underpass which is under the roundabout which is under the overpass. Also the pedestrian underpass crossing connects up to the roundabout between the roundabout itself and the slip-lanes, the reasong being that there are bus stops IN the roundabout, which is not really good in my opinion and would be the major thing I'd change.

@Sum41rthe1 2 года назад
My choice of intersection is usually the double Bybass roundabout or something similar. The partial is way better. Going to start using that. One thing on the partial, I noticed on the roundabouts you have 2 lanes merge into one slip lane for entering the motorway, any reason for that over just one?
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
Its so two lanes of through traffic can make it across on the arterial.
@OldManBadly

The real issue here is the number of interactions and number of cars flowing through. Straight thru bypasses are the most obvious way to lower the flow of traffic through the interchange to start with, which also offering the straight thru traffic the desirable "no slow down" route. The dogbone / dumbell could be significantly improved just by giving the north south a straight through option that would be faster than taking the traffic circles. That would lower the traffic in by a certain amount, and also significantly decrease the number of car to car interactions occuring.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
Straight through traffic is a normal situation that interchanges generally need to accommodate for. The parclo did much better with this in mind.

Double By-pass Roundabout looks alot like a busy intersection in my area.. but remove right turn by-pass and add timed traffic lights on the 4 corners of the roundabout. "knooppunt rottepolderplein" i find it an annoying intersections where jams usually come from in my area. (don't know if there there often though as i don't go that way often.) but due to size constraints train rails on one side and industrial on the other it kinda makes sense. Edit: just looked up the intersection.. apparently its only 2/3's of the intersection.. the one below it with "Schipholweg" is also tecnically part of it.

All of these apart from the partial cloverleaf variety are common in the UK The other type that you haven't tried is the big wheel which is basically a huge roundabout spanning the highway (or going underneath) in 2 places which is super super common especially as service interchanges or where several medium roads meet a motorway in a more rural area... It especially works well when you have more than 2 feeder roads joining

On the Double By-pass Highway Roundabout, it looks like there's a nasty conflict point where the highway offramp meets the roundabout. I realize conflict points are impossible to eliminate altogether. I was imagining myself entering that roundabout at near highway speed, and crossing the traffic exiting the roundabout. You can even see some of the CIMS slamming on their brakes, lol. I like the design, though. I think that intersection/merge could use a tweak. edit: I just realized calling a Double By-pass is fitting, lol. Could induce heart-attacks.
@YUMBL

@@YUMBL What do you have your 'follows the rules of the road' setting at? I swear I saw those drivers sailing thru that merge, oncoming traffics be damned. Maybe it's just normal functionality, but more obvious because there's only the one interchange to focus on. I just thought it was kinda funny.
@pfeilspitze

Well a dumbbell or dogbone is a service interchange. It's slightly better than a diamond, but I'd definitely not expect it to be able to handle all that much traffic. The interchange test map is definitely for system interchanges.

Service interchanges do fine on interchange test map. Just not the lower traffic density ones. A timed traffic light can also handle the traffic here.

Just the nature of cars sharing lanes in the roundabout. It requires a three lane road to force cars to use a specific exit, but thats not realistic or necessary here imo. Two should be enough, but you cant force them to use the lanes you want.

A recurrent problem is that the roundabouts are too small. More precisely, the distance between coming onto the roundabout to the next place going off is too small. Don't forget that roundabouts have crossing traffic, and you just do not have enough space to do the crossing in. Also, use node manager to make the 90-degree enter/exit things larger.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
Most of the roundabouts were 64 meters in diameter. Quite large. And I did use node controller. There was just too much traffic for the first two.
@sirjmo
@sirjmo 2 года назад
I was hoping for sliplanes in the massive dogbone, but as someone stated a 2-2-2-2 split of the highways is probably not realistic for a dogbone and a 3-1-3-1 would be better as you'll expect a non even distribution of traffic and destinations. Maybe even a 3-2-2-1 as one end of the dogbone may be more popular, same with the highway.

Here's a test for any junction: reduce all the roads coming out of a junction to 1 lane with a low speed limit, wait until it is all jammed up, then remove the restrictions and see what happens. The vanilla cloverleaf fails this test miserably (it will not recover) but my optimized cloverleaf recovers within minutes.
@Kaitou-ug5yi
@Kaitou-ug5yi 2 года назад
The vanilla cloverleaf is so bad because the entrance to the highway is before the exit. So traffic can loop around on itself and keep itself stuck.
@mrxmry3264
@mrxmry3264 2 года назад
@@Kaitou-ug5yi Yeah, the vanilla cloverleaf is all kinds of bad because of all the weaving that is required. A modified cloverleaf shifts the weaving onto a side road so that traffic on the main road can flow freely, which is better. My optimized cloverleaf completely eliminates weaving by switching slip roads around before they merge.

One thing I've noticed is a lot of the traffic leaves the highway, stops at the roundabout then enters the roundabout and continues on the direction it was already going...in other words a lot of traffic didn't need to leave the highway, but it did...causing too much build up at the roundabout. Need to find a way to prevent traffic that's going straight across the interchange and using the roundabout.

Hmm, regarding space taken up by the bypass roundabout intersections, I think if RL road geometries were followed then they're more efficient. I'm sure you know that the roundabout intersections are so common in the UK partly because of the space cloverleafs take up. I think that on motorways, weaving sections (like you have in the middle of a c-leaf) can't be shorter than 2km. The only c-leafs in the UK are on lower speed roads. In effect the slip roads give time for drivers to adjust to the lower speed on a roundabout, so weaving, sharp angles etc aren't a problem, but directly off a motorway, they are a problem.
