Turning Right to go Left - The Jug Handle and Quadrant intersection
➤A tried and true intersection solution: The Jug Handle. aka the "Jersey Left". A little right turn can net you a whole lot of left. The Quadrant Intersection is the jug handles cousin that can also do the same thing. Enjoy!

This intersection could be used down town when an intersection needs to be upgraded, but because so many buildings around, they can expand. But could use some back streets to divert traffic, better flow, no buildings knocked down.

Where I'm from in Jersey (route 9 monmouth county), the jug handles are one way and shaped kind of like highway exits. This means they are tighter and take up less space AND that you don't need a light to enter the jug handle. And there's always either one or two at an intersection, never more. The reason is usually you're prioritizing the highway (US-9) movement's left turns by giving it its own cycle while the local/ collector has to do traditional left turns at the intersection. In my IRL experience this works really well when the spacing on the jug handles are appropriate for the traffic.

I was in Paramus recently. Loved the jug handles. You’re right, theyre great on a more minor crossing so turning left after the handle is an easy stop sign.
@matteovillata7446
@matteovillata7446 2 года назад
Makes more sense to me. I mean just one way prioritizing left. Like this on one cycle you go straight and right and in one cycle you go left . That applies to every directions. Using tmpe you can prioritise by the jump in and not let the ppl going straight doing the same. It might work for better flowing. In my view you will need 4 highway crossing so space will be an issue
@lordgeovanni
@lordgeovanni 2 года назад
I will support this here as well. Live south of Nestor, but also in NJ. Jughandles save so much space where Clovers take up too much. There is still issue with both sides trying to turn left (I.E. If you ar going Northbound and take the Jug, you are facing West. If you turn left you made a U-Turn. But going straight is your "left" without sitting in the Northbound traffic. Only issue I know of is that the West-face and East-Face (if South-bound also has a Jug, or if either side has a connecting road which people want to enter/exit from) cannot both have a left turn and a straight. (North- and South-bound cannot have both a Left Turn and U-Turn without a 3-stage light.) If you need straight-through traffic, a double clover leaf might be better. But that also prevents U-Turns.

Just realised, it is actually super nice for pedestrians too, if you split the centre into 4 phases. All 4 right turns can be active 2 of the phases, and each straight can be active 2 of the phases. You can let pedestrians cross the centre 25% of the time without affecting traffic at all!
@Pystro
@Pystro 2 года назад
Oh, you mean phases like these: 1st is a W-E straight-only phase, with pedestrians; 2nd is a W-E phase with ALL right turns (where right turns onto the W-E road have to get a dedicated lane); 3rd is a N-S straight-only phase, with pedestrians; 4th is a N-S phase with ALL right turns again (where right turns onto the N-S road get dedicated lanes). That gives "exactly" 50% green for each straight. And depending on the time ratio of phases 1&3 to 2&4 you get approximately 50% green for each rights and approximately 25% green for each pedestrian crossing.
@Pystro
@Pystro 2 года назад
Technically any 2-phase intersection can also be made pedestrian friendly with just a 3rd "all-right" phase. The first phase would still handle all straight N-S movements (similar to the 2-phase light, but without the right turns so that pedestrians can cross in N-S directions); The second phase would be for for all straight W-E movements (including pedestrians, but no right turns). However, the 2-quadrant Jughandle has 2 of the right turns use those Jughandle ramps as slip lanes. If you used that fact, you could have a 3-phase pedestrian-friendly light in the center, and only free-flowing outlying junctions! Here's how: The 1st phase in the center handles all straight N-S movements (no rights, with pedestrians). The 2nd phase handles all W-E movements (no rights, with pedestrians). The rights from East to North and from West to South use the Jughandle rams (assuming the orientation shown at 4:58). The 3rd phase then only needs to handle South-to-East and North-to-West right turns, which leaves the center of the main intersection free to have the opposing East-to-South and West-to-North left turns go at the same time (through the main intersection). In that phase, you could even have pedestrians cross diagonally in the NE-SW direction. The remaining left turns, for example South-to-West, can proceed like in a cloverleaf: straight S-to-N, right into the NE jughandle, right onto the E-to-W avenue and in that direction through the main intersection (and similarly for North-to-East). One problem with this would be that the outlying free-flowing intersections would not be very safe for pedestrians.

i'm from NJ and Rt 37 has a ton of jug handles, i've noticed that they are mainly used to connect an arterial to a collector using a 3 cycle light. So at the intersection of an arterial and a collector if you are on the arterial and want to turn left onto the collector you would use a jug handle but if you are on a collector and wanted to turn left onto the arterial you would have a cycle at the light allowing you to just turn left through the intersection

I’m from trenton and we don’t see any over here. But every time I go down to Toms River area they are plentiful, including hooper Ave. they work pretty well over there but even more dense areas like US-1 through Lawrenceville (at the corner of Bakers Basin Rd/Franklin Corner Rd) it becomes impossible to get in because of the close proximity of the jughandle to the intersection (it’s one where you have to turn left onto the minor road). The main advantage in real life to these, is that there’s no bridges or overpasses! This is really great for cities where you don’t wanna riip through downtown with a freeway, and also allows much closer intersections as apposed to freeway interchanges. When used at ~45 mph speed limit you can actually time all the lights in a district or small town to be timed with one and other. My reference is 287 in Loveland, co. Effectively creating a bandwidth similar to a 45mph parclo highway, with enhanced crossings for pedestrians. Other thing is a lot of people hate big overpass freeways, so alternative intersection designs are most likely going to be the future of economically vital roadways. Also with the trend of highway removal, this intersection can be plugged into a freeway without weaving issues, so as parclos and diamonds get gradually zoned out and destroyed on freeways I’m predicting we are gonna see a lot more of these. Realistically as a city planner you need to evaluate that ~30mph distance in relation to the crime that comes with over and underpasses. What’s gonna realistically improve more happiness per capita, increase individual and local income, and increase safety.

Doing a four quadrant jug also borders on making a 2 way roundabout. Looking at the thumbnail I thought this was the old turbo roundabout video (glad I read the title). We have one of these where I live, except it is applied as poorly as possible. They take a four lane side of an arterial, add in two lanes on the left from a freeway, pull the right lane off to do the jug turn. They tap it into what would otherwise be a three way intersection, but then also still have the left two lanes coming from the highway turn into a normal left hand turn. It is confusing and stupid they way it is set up here. I would really enjoy seeing it done more like this.

The signal timing could be further improved by using a green wave rather than simultaneous greens. The problem with simultaneous greens is that the left turn phase can only process the number of cars which can be stored between the two intersections, as you see at 6:22. If you stagger the greens by the travel time between the intersections, the left turn phase would start before the main intersection goes to yellow, netting you a couple extra cars per cycle, with no cost to other movements. In fact the through movements would also be improved since those cars would always get through the main intersection without stopping (the stops would all happen at the minor intersection).

This is basically a slightly more low-tech partial cloverleaf. If you grade separate the middle intersection, and add sliplanes for right turning on the north-south road, it becomes the same thing... if I'm seeing it right. Or conversely, you can build a slightly simpler parclo like this; the right turning sliplanes are just taken care of by lanes in the middle intersection.

I bet businesses would love the fact that there's huge volumes of fairly slow traffic using these jughandles. The only problem is that you can only come from 3 directions onto each jughandle road, and you can only leave each jughandle road in 3 of the 4 directions. No wait, you can get from one quadrant to the other! That means you can freely move between them, as long as there's parking lots in each one that you can use to turn around.

This can not only be useful as a transitional intersection from a standard one to a parclo, but can also be useful if you need to upgrade an intersection to a parclo, but the intersection's surrounded by big buildings to mitigate the bulldozing, which is especially useful if you're giving yourself special rules that the residents/businesses using those buildings would protest their home/businesses being bulldozed, so you have to compromise, which is something that's needed all the time IRL.

I just added this to my latest city after converting it to left hand drive (not a trivial task). I would say it has one weakness as shown here. If most of the traffic is straight on it will work but if there's a lot of left turns you've got a problem. One set of left turns are very limited because the left turn goes green but the main junction behind it is red so you get about 5-10 cars through and then you have to wait for the next cycle. I fixed this by splitting that cycle of the main lights between straight on and left.

Hey I know this one! They use these (although not as attractive as yours) where I live. These ones are more of a speed issue than a throughput one, I think. For example, on a 55mph rural highway, the left turns off the highway would be jughandles with an exit lane. A signal light would stop highway traffic for the crossing. Never seen an urban/suburban application of these. Pretty cool!

I used to live in New Jersey and those things were all over the damn place. And there was no consistency on how they were configured, so you needed a good GPS or local knowledge to be in the right position to use one. God forbid if you were expecting a normal left turn but there is a jughandle at that intersection that diverges from the main road before the intersection itself.

6:37 the traffic from top left that wants to turn left is stuck in red light twice now. When the big intersection is green, they get to go straight but only get stuck at the small intersection for turning left. And it seems like not all of them get to go because the queue for turning left is long.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
This is correct. Theres an element of luck (randomness) in what cars are going where, but generally that wasnt an issue.
@Pystro
@Pystro 2 года назад
Yeah, you could probably mitigate that by offsetting the phase of the outlying intersections and the center one. Using that same top-left to right-jughandle movement: First (in the 1st phase, 0% through the cycle) the cars would get green going straight through the top left outlying junction (and for symmetry also straights through the bottom right one); then the center would switch green (in the 2nd phase, 25% through the cycle, with the outlying junctions still green for straights); and once those cars arrive at the bottom right junction, it would switch to the 3rd phase (50% through the cycle), where the outlying junctions (both, for symmetry) turn green for the left movements (center still unchanged). At 75% through the cycle the middle would switch to green for the other direction, starting the 4th phase. (This would coincide with the last car that made it straight through the outlying junctions in the 1st and 2nd phase clearing that center junction. And at 100% through the cycle you'd start over with the 1st phase. (And this would be exactly when that last car that made it straight through the outlying junction at the end of the 2nd phase and through the center at the end of the 3rd phase would clear the left through the outlying junction.) The other left turns (which proceed like in a cloverleaf) need to travel twice as far between catching the central junction at opposite phases, though. But that can be solved by setting the speed limit on the jughandle ramps to exactly half of that of the avenues. Then they will take exactly 6 phases for their movement through the loops.

Nice! lots of room to adjust it too. I wonder what the optimal placing of the jug handles would be in various circumstances. If you have lots of flow NS/SN, are you better with all junctions on the other route on not? What about if the largest route is NE/EN? Is that corner better having a handle or not? Lots of science to be done!
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
Funny thing: no matter where you put the opposing corners you’ve made both variants. It would be important to note which road has more traffic though

Any guess to the amount of money needed for this, a partial cloverleaf and the SPUI? (In the real world) A while back I recall something about a huge upcoming peak in building cost, as concrete lasts around 50-80 years and so much is build in the decades following WW2. So basically everything ever build needs to be replaced in maybe a 20-50 year period. And a large part needs urgent replacement in one or two decades if it's not planned right. Could there be truth to this, or is it not that urgent?

This is an odd use of jug handles. More often they are used as a way to jump from a major artery road (often semi-separated) to a local road. Skipping the collector completely. Fantastic for multiple very small, but somewhat dense neighborhoods. The best real world example of jug handles I know of: • 40.40462440837085, -79.53867829488318 • 40.39832170997116, -79.46708730748942

When traveling straight on the street with the turn-offs...getting stuck at two intersection traffic signals is better than getting stuck at one? This would be great for people driving straight on the other street which has no turn-offs.

Its all just to increase the capacity a bit. This could move more traffic than a single light.

Hey YUMBLtv can you please help me? In your videos, you have the zoning Adjuster on and you have multiple options for: (Modes:) (Straight slope) (Max Segment) etc... How do I enable these options? I don't have them I'm wondering what mod it is, I have Zoning Adjuster just not those additional settings? I know this intersection all to well being from Jersey! PS. I have been binging your videos to help myself get better at this game. Good work and advice!

Personally, I think the "jug handles" that you refer to, along with the "X" shape of the crossing, all look like the outline of a "bowtie" to me, so that's what I'd like to propose calling this kind of continuous-flow parclo intersection derivative: a "bowtie".

you have right-hand traffic make an extra cross left in order to turn left?...... Don't jug handles exploit ease of right turns in RH traffic, and *minimise* crossing conflicts?

Jug handles can work in all directions. All that matters here is the two cycle light. All movements are designed to support that.
