ROUTEMASTER RML2408 Restoration

To achieve the desired finish it was necessary to renew virtually all of the external paneling, this required approximately twelve 8'x4" aluminium sheets and close to four thousand rivets.
More often than not the RM/RML's aluminium framework will have survived remarkably well and this one is no exception, only the effects of repeated accident damage required the need for a few new parts on the lower rear structure. Original rear light fittings and front indicators have been reinstated along with the correct style RML radiator grille.
Internally, almost all traces of the "modernised" layout were removed in favour of the traditional Routemaster colours and fittings. A durable carpet material of appropriate colour was used to re-cover the side panels as an alternative to the original rexine.

London can’t let these buses go to waste. There just such a beautiful icon. What’s not to love about them? 🙌🇬🇧🇬🇧

Completely agree with you on that one.

tilsworthworks thank you! I just really admire this bus. And that is saying something. The design is astounding. And it has the eyes of tourists from many places. And(with respect) while the new routemasters are a good idea for pollution wise! They just don’t have that same spark/Iconic design as the older routemaster. If they only had a very similar design to these treasures then perhaps I wouldn’t be so uncomfortable with them.

Just great to see where a certain bus has come from and where it's got to. Reminds me of my own 15 years with an AEC. Always a delight to see those gorgeous colours and smooth finishes retake their places over the curves of the classic design. Long may 2408 "guard the flame".

Outstanding work, and results as always! I particularly love it when the rear end is restored to the original - a vast improvement on what was considered itself an 'improvement',

Hi, search web for "Vel Trim" and you should find a few links to suppliers of the felt/carpet in the UK. We are using this material as a substitute to rexine because most "moderinised" RML's were lined with formica sheets that are usually bonded to the original side panels. Burgundy rexine would be favorable but the removal of the formica sheet is not cost effective so we apply the felt directly over it.

@thisiszaphodbeeblebr Thanks for your kind words. I I agree about the rear lights, the 'new' lights are cheap & nasty and poorly fitted, finding originals to replace them is becoming difficult these days though.

Great finish inside & out. Can i ask what the carpet material was that you used instead of the original rexine as it looks really good & at some point i'll need to try & restore my routemaster ?

I used to drive a Routemaster, can I take it for a spin? Glad to see you've got rid of those rubbish front indicators and awful rear lights! Is the original engine still fitted?

Many of the 'Routemaster rental' companies are always on the lookout for experienced drivers, we have carried out work on Routemasters and RF's for Thisbus.com and Timebus.co.uk. Totally agree with you on the so-called "modernised" indicators.......just horrible. I believe the engine is a Cummings lump.

6:14 De-bastardisation complete. Did it get an AEC heart back?

Hi James, Thanks for viewing and for the brutally honest comment! Sadly no AEC engine, but to be fair to Thisbus.com they always go above and beyond how most other Routemaster hire operators turn out their fleet.

tilsworthworks st least it looks like a classic Routemaster again, especially with those 20" two piece rims at the front. I personally prefer the white roundel on the sides, but this is back to as delivered appearance, at least.

If you like the white roundel livery you'll be glad to hear RM1400 has been restored (or is it unrestored?) to that period, hope to have a video up soon.

tilsworthworks I'm very pleased. Thank you. They did some RTs like that for An American Werewolf in London and they looked superb despite never having been so treated in LT service.
