Welcome to our channel, a collection of slideshow videos to illustrate the restoration process of ex London Transport buses & coaches. The pictures were originally taken so a record could be shown as a guarantee that all work had been completed to the correct specification and highest possible standard.
The purpose of these videos is to make available to anyone interested an insight into our experiences of bus & coach restoration. It may also be useful as a source of reference for the owners of the featured vehicles and also for those currently restoring vehicles of these types.
For restorations before 2004 a simple 35mm compact camera was used which produced a very large amount of negatives. Poor storage conditions damaged the negatives and it was obvious they had to be transferred to a digital format if the images were to survive. An attempt was made to restore the images with computer software but some discoloration and staining still remains.
Nice job with this bus. Watched this clip many times before but now the music is dropped from this footage. I'm not sorry for that even though the music previously played on this You Tube footage wasn't that bad.
For some time I have been looking for detailed pictures of the driver's cab in order to create a 1:24 scale model in the original color scheme. You have done me a great favor and I would like to thank you very much for that. 👍🙋🏻♂️
I had to come and find this, I've just seen the bus on the MV (video) for Fri(end)s, the latest song release by V of BTS. He also filmed at the Ace Cafe for the retro 50's diner/70's feel of the MV. The bus is beautiful; shoutout for all your skills and talent in renovating a piece of history. 💜
Probably out of place to make this comment after this length of time. Perhaps these buses were less efficient than the newer modes of transportation, hence they had to go. Restoring and putting them back on roads defeats the very purpose of phasing them out unless corruption was the motive behind inducting the newer systems.
It is very heartening to see TD89 being restored. Two of my friends from work were part of the TD 89 Group back in the 1970s so I enjoyed several trips in it along with other friends, on one occasion as a treat for helping with some restoration work. The best day out was accompanying the HCVC run to Brighton - we could not take part as entrants as the bus was not restored enough but it was still great fun. The bus was clearly very well built in the first place as it has lasted so long and bearing in mind where it has been - it is worth reading about the `Eurobash` it did with some less abled children and its other uses before it was preserved. I can also remember TDs in use on the 240A route from Mill Hill East to Edgware but never actually rode on it so I am looking forward to seeing the fully restored vehicle and having another ride!

At the time this was being built, Briggs Bodies of Dagenham was an independent firm and taking on supply contracts to firms other than Ford, who were their main customers. It is likely the small run of front ends for the Guy was quite an attractive deal and kept costs down for Guy. It may be that Ford got something out of it but Briggs did have their own design studio and very possibly the style was theirs and hence theirs to sell. By the end of 1953 Briggs had been bought out by Ford in order to safeguard their body supplies ( something that later spread throughout the car industry in the 1950s as other manufacturers realised buying in bodies left them very vulnerable to hostile take overs) and all the Briggs supplies to outside firms ceased. There had been another Briggs factory in Doncaster and this was eventually closed down. A notable casualty of this was Jowett of Bradford who were heavily dependednt on Briggs and stopped making cars in 1954.
Those busses looked pretty fragile when you look at them in the videos as they are when you where around on them as you see how they taken how they gone in so long very well and now what a change
Wonderful, a true labour of Love. Was this RT an original timber framed red LT Bus or always a Green Country Bus. I have heard that Country Buses didn’t look after their RTs as well as London Transport.
As far as i know it was always a green bus, but who can be sure with RT's! The way I've heard it is that the green buses suffered because they didn't have the same garage facilities that central London had?
Hi, can someone tell me what the two white tipped lever things on the dashboard behind the steering column at 1:34 to 1:36 are for? I'm building a model of the Routemaster and trying to figure out the cab controls. Thanks!
Hi Ian McGee, they are heater and fresh air controls, they open/close the flaps under the drivers screen. I had make a mistake and painted white on both at that point, only the left hand lever should have the white tip (the cab heater switch).
My grandfather had a similar bus like this... it was a Bedford vam bus front engine... aec body was awesome but we build a new one on the chassis later on
Hi Roshan Annauth, sounds good, was it your own design? I have built a new body (except the roof) but it was a copy of the original on this bus ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L0RD2M0AjsA.html
G'day and greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 congratulations on a painstaking restoration work that turned out a real credit to all involved, I think it's terrific how people like yourselves are keeping Britain's transport history going. Kind regards John
Very glad to see people with time, dedication and patience restoring these beautiful iconic vehicles from a glorious time in London's history. I have loved RT's, RMs and RFs since a child. Not that it makes any iota of difference but I thought RTs looked slightly dated. RM's never did, Love every angle of these great vehicles, unlike today's box shaped uninteresting buses.
RFs were my childhood. Uxbridge had 4 RF routes: 204, 223, 224 and 224B when I was at school. Used the 0806 223 from Ruislip every morning, getting off at Swakeleys roundabout. 1553 one home although if the 1549 98 ran late you could have a ride on an RT. Still remember that from 1971.
Was this not originally a London Country Regal? As all our Greenline coaches at Staines garage had twin headlights! The bus that I remember driving had a thin green line around it and single headlights whereas the Greenline coaches had a thicker line around them. Please correct me if I'm wrong as it was back in the early 60's that I drove one.
All RF's (Regal IV) started out with single headlights and the thin green/cream line around windows. The Greenline RF's with twin headlights and wide green band you remember were the result of a 'modernisation' program to bring the RF's up do date, i think they drew inspiration from the Gleenline Routemaster RMC that was fairly new at the time: twin headlights, florescent lighting, seat moquette, interior/exterior colour scheme. This Greenline RF survived in unmodernised condition.
Only just found this clip and what an astonishing restoration has been done. Brought back memories of travelling to school in the early 60s into Epsom on the 418 route (or was it 470 can't remember) which started out at the long gone Leatherhead country bus garage and did a grand tour of Surrey places like Bookham, Fetcham and Effingham and back via Leatherhead and Ashtead. They were green coloured buses like this one which lined up at the end of their routes outside Epsom Station with similar red RT ones going north to Putney Bridge (93) and Morden stations (164) . Hanging off the platform at the back holding onto that central pole whilst the conductor ignored us as he was too busy cashing up his ticket machine as the final stop approached. Health and Safety a lifetime ago !! Where are these beauties stored now and can they be seen?
A great restoration, the work on the platform area was very impressive. It's always interesting to see the structure of these buses that lies beneath the skin (and amazing that so much was wood...!)
Many Thanks. Initially the owner of this bus was concerned only about the springy feel of the platform, he couldn't have known just how bad it was! Everything else carried on from that.
I drove this bus after this restoration in private hire work. It was known as "the pretty bus" and was a pleasure to drive and to its passengers. It's still in operation from the same yard but is having a Covid rest.
If there's one thing that spoils a restoration, it's not getting the indicators back to the original ... It was my love of RT's and RM's that made me become a bus conductor in Southend ... This slideshow had me in tears ... Thank you for doing a 'proper' job ...
Cheers. The "modernised" indicators are just cheap and nasty, a big lump of rubber and plastic mounted on a piece of fiberglass and held in place with anything from rivets to duct tape! The arrangement on the rear wasn't much better either.......
Noticed a slide of the unmistakable shape of an RM bonnet @ 3.56.... & 10.29 seems to be side profile of an RML with the additional single bay window (added when they extended the body to carry 8 more seated passengers) Finished RT looks lovely, takes me back to my childhood living in Sydenham which was totally RT territory at the time
