RT3183 shares many of the problems seen in our other RT restoration videos but it should come as no great surprise when you consider these buses are over 60 years old!
In 1980 this RT was heavily modified and spent approximately 10 years in use as 'the Harlow Playbus' and during this time repairs were carried out to rebuild the platform riser and platform supports, although we found some of these repairs to be far from perfect there can be no doubt that without this complicated and expensive work this RT would have ended up in a scrap yard many years ago.
After we removed the lower rear paneling and remains of the timber it became clear that the whole lower rear structure had no physical connection to the new platform supports and was simply hanging from the upper deck, this would also account for the springy feel of the platform floor. The repairs follow original drawing plans and the parts are reproduced from original patterns.

Thanks for the kind comment. We often ask ourselves the same question, how is this still in one piece! It's a true testament to the designers and builders of these old buses that we can give them a new lease of life. This bus was used for many years as a static play-bus and the British weather took its toll on the steel/timber frame. I hope 47 doesn't qualify as senior.......but that's only my third Yankee screwdriver in 15 years (well spotted).

I envy the skill, dedication and determination of the people who bring these once proud vehicles back to life.

Stunning yet again, how did this old girl hold herself together. The giveaway evidence of an senior in years craftesman at work is the Yankee screwdriver at 2.00! If I am correct then I can only hope that he is passing these skills on to a younger generation, once these skills are gone then the're gone forever.

Very glad to see people with time, dedication and patience restoring these beautiful iconic vehicles from a glorious time in London's history. I have loved RT's, RMs and RFs since a child. Not that it makes any iota of difference but I thought RTs looked slightly dated. RM's never did, Love every angle of these great vehicles, unlike today's box shaped uninteresting buses.

Only just found this clip and what an astonishing restoration has been done. Brought back memories of travelling to school in the early 60s into Epsom on the 418 route (or was it 470 can't remember) which started out at the long gone Leatherhead country bus garage and did a grand tour of Surrey places like Bookham, Fetcham and Effingham and back via Leatherhead and Ashtead. They were green coloured buses like this one which lined up at the end of their routes outside Epsom Station with similar red RT ones going north to Putney Bridge (93) and Morden stations (164) . Hanging off the platform at the back holding onto that central pole whilst the conductor ignored us as he was too busy cashing up his ticket machine as the final stop approached. Health and Safety a lifetime ago !! Where are these beauties stored now and can they be seen?

Kind words - many thanks trainmanbob. I do agree about the music. All our videos contain songs supplied in the RU-vid video enhancements, there's some real gems to be found in there.

A great restoration, the work on the platform area was very impressive. It's always interesting to see the structure of these buses that lies beneath the skin (and amazing that so much was wood...!)

Many Thanks. Initially the owner of this bus was concerned only about the springy feel of the platform, he couldn't have known just how bad it was! Everything else carried on from that.

Wonderful, a true labour of Love. Was this RT an original timber framed red LT Bus or always a Green Country Bus. I have heard that Country Buses didn’t look after their RTs as well as London Transport.
@tilsworthworks
@tilsworthworks 2 года назад
As far as i know it was always a green bus, but who can be sure with RT's! The way I've heard it is that the green buses suffered because they didn't have the same garage facilities that central London had?

For more repairs no doubt! This is one of those buses that needs a lot of work and an owner with very deep pockets!

Ooo seeing this so threw me back to the good old days of the RT running the 410 Bromley North to Reigate route and the blessed things struggling to creep down Biggin Hill towards Westerham and there wasn't the M25 and looking through at the driver with clenched teeth fighting the old girl round them tight super steep turns, was even more fun going back up almost crawling and wheezing the poor things and the myriad honkings of frustrated drivers behind, happy days indeed. I think the RT's went quickly from 410 to Leylands because of that damned hill and I have less fond memories of my Talbot Horizon losing her brakes going down the same drop over Brasted way and having to pay a surly farmer for the damage to one gate and a bit of hedgerow... Good fun on a Vespa even with the M25 roundabout and bridge there, Swanley Traffic Police also found it a delightful place to lurk in wait for ne'erdowell drivers who were just itching to get a blue light moment.

One of the LT ones lingered at Catford garage for many long years after even the RM's were being phased out, think it was a 47 route RT may have been a 1 although I remember them well on my own local route 94 especially the "staff special" that ran from Lewisham to Sidcup via Orpington and the same would be leaving Sidcup same time to head to Lewisham and it was a popular route esp for the old Rank shift workers at the old film lab place between Sidcup and Orpington or the workers down the Cray's industrial estates. 94 then got the RM, then became 261 and then went all square and modern, one of the marvels of the route was the singing clippy who was supposed to have retired like 20 years before and no one bothered to tell him, abs ancient he was and more often or not he would let you off the fare so you had extra pocket money, abs loved to bits that clippy was a right character :D

I recall the 410 being an RLH service rather than RT - due to a low bridge en route - but remember it was a very cheap and effective bus to get to Biggin Hill air fairs! I'm amazed at the quality of your restoration and the challenges you met with that rotten woodwork - very well done, and great music too!

It does look like the paint was structural. One thing that does worry me, there will be preserved buses out there in similar body condition, that are carrying full loads at rallies, and if they were involved in even a minor prang, the bus would simply crumble to nothing
@tilsworthworks
@tilsworthworks 7 лет назад
What worries me is if injuries were involved with said prang, Health & Safety would come down hard on the preserved bus fleet. That said, I think most have had at least some attention by now, i doubt there are any really "dangerous" RT's around.

@@tilsworthworks : Around 69/70 "the word was LTEx were selling off RTs. I wrote to 55 The Broadway and, somewhere, have the reply that one could be obtained for £100.00. I was about 12 at the time, Dad said 'No'.
@tilsworthworks
@tilsworthworks 3 года назад
@@suzyqualcast6269 In my case it was around 1980 and Dad said yes, but i hadn't asked the question! He then announced i would be helping him restore it (for the next ten years worth of Sundays)!
