I somehow find it awfully upsetting how much Croydon has changed and unfortunately its not for the better. I used to love telling people that I'm from Croydon now its something I don't go shouting about.
@@southlondonlad9144 of course I get it. People should just say their prejudices with their chest and not beat around the bush. Say there is more black people now and you don't like it. Don't be scared
@@TheCLI1988 Yes it's true but whenever white people say anything like that we get a hard time for it. Yes it's true, the population of white people in a lot of places has rapidly gone down and I don't think it's good. Thankfully there are some places that haven't gone that way. To be honest, on the whole white and black people just don't mix, because our cultures are totally different.
It’s great to see the RM buses in action, I was a bus driver for 3 years from early 85-88. My first garage was Merton, then Streatham & Brixton 49, 155, 77, then 159 & 137. Some of the routes are now cut in half or don’t exist anymore. I love the old Croydon high street with Alders, C&A & Grants and would travel to Croydon on the 64 from Mitcham. I still visit Croydon to shop, but it’s skeleton of its form self. I often visit Brooklands Museum, which has a wonderful Bus Museum and well worth a visit. I am still driving around London & the Southeast in a different but interesting Job. Thank you for posting this great video 😊
Wow this was awesome. I remember when you could drive thru. Honestly, I think it's a real shame it looks like it does in 2019. We ain't getting Westfield now and it's a shithole. Thank you Croydon council for spoiling my Croydon
Same age I was then, can’t believe that was 36 years ago now only seems like yesterday. Croydon has changed out of all recognition have to admit I preferred it the way it used to be.
Ha ha typical croydon buses back in the day.... you wait an hour for a bus then at 3.17 three come at once 🤣 Great to see this reminds me of being a kid can almost smell the deisel fumes! Thanks 👍
This was when Croydon was great the best it ever was. Used to catch the 68 to school in Upper norwood in 1986. Moved out of croydon late 90s as became a cess pit of people moving in which just had no respect for the place
skaterbun couldnt agree more i lived in tulse hill an my dad had a shop.in tamworth rd. it was a treat to go croydon shops etc. bought a house in t heath 96 n watched it nose dive. moved out as did most on my road
@Oddjob6120 we had some great sports facilities but so did you at Sylvan. Played 5 a side with the Boys Brigade there. I had a lot of mates from primary school who went to Sylvan.
I live in Purley And will not set foot in Croydon now as it has become a crime ridden Hell hole with Nasty looking Tower blocks towering over you. It is unrecognizable from that era apart from the roads like Katherine street where Croydon library is.
I went to school in Croydon from 1960. The death of this lovely area started in the 1970's. By 1986, the South Norwood and Croydon I knew were already unrecognisable.
There was some thing very nostalgic about it. It was a proper British department store. Before it shut down i sometimes would wonder around the store and get lost in nostalger.
Went to school in Croydon, shopping every Saturday with my mother the Whitgift , Allders, Grants , Debenhams everything was there it was magical especially at Christmas. But that was yesteryear toady it's practically a run down travesty of it's former self. Absolutely breaks my heart.
just wonderful…yep brings back many happy memories sours of how croydon was..yess those bus stops outside alllders always had masses of people waiting and that main road i remember too!! guys croydon now..OMGD..it really is awful!! looking at this video also makes me think that at that exact time, fred and the boys were out there on their European magic tour…awwww wonderful days 🥰🥰🥰
This was 1986 and the beginnings of pedestrianisation were there. If you look at the sections where the camera is pointing down the High St towards the junction with Katharine St (where NatWest is) you will see the signs marking the end of pedestrianisation. It was buses only down North End to begin with on weekdays IIRC, so it wasn't total from the beginning. It was a few years later that the drivers decided of their own accord to use Wellesley Road instead of North End and the change became permanent.
When the trolleys finished in 1962 my interest waned because I wasn't that impressed with RMs. 25 years on I found myself filming them before THEY disappered from the streets not thinking about the poor old DMS!!
Croydon is one of my favourite places. I don't give a shit who says what, I'm glad it hasn't changed too much. A Westfield might not have been a good idea.
thanks for video used to go up Croydon back in the 80's+90's........do you have any more from the 80's like Bexleyheath in Kent.....also like how you got 3 well known musical posters on the buses, Phantom of the opera,Time,Les Miserables classic 80's
Surely there must be more footage out there of DMS B20s zooming around!!! I know they were unliked, but if they were maintained properly, they would have be fine!! They did okay in China ETC! I want one or loads.. as well as the bus I have now! (DMS550)- Nice vid BTW!
No phones in people's hands and no spy cameras everywhere to fine you for driving or putting a cigarette out.ahh I miss thoughs days when life was simple.u
London has changed so much since 1986 and this video recording was made around CITY OF LONDON and the surroundings and is close to Liverpool Street Train station
Bollocks; I grew up in Croydon and go back there quite a lot and there are still plenty of white people there. There were plenty of Asian and Black people when I was growing up too. I went to St Mary's on Sydenham Road and there were kids of all colours.
