One of our more popular videos was the original JET pin router description we made over a year ago. We thought it was about time to make another video showcasing this remarkable tool.

I found this video by looking for pin routers in service and in love it. Screw the idiots who only have to comment what you’re doing wrong. And I’m real glad you told them what you think. Awesome job man. I wish I could play guitar more than ever!

That thing looks fantastic! And if you get blood on it, just stain that shit right in. Safety has it's place, absolutely it does, but so does being a grown-ass man who is using HIS own tools to do HIS shit as he sees fit. I appreciate your efforts sir!

What router bit do you use for gouging/hogging out a lot of material. I have an older shop smith pin router router table and use the larger Bosch router overhead. Cheers thanks for the help.

Really interesting stuff, guys! I swear I must have watched 6-8 hours of content since yesterday. 👍 Really like you guys. Just, wish I could afford one of your absolutely amazing guitars. Keep it up! One thing I suggest is wearing a respirator when doing paint and clear. Clear especially becaue it uses a hardener. I gave myself pneumonia when I did automotive refinishing because I didn't use one. My lungs were caked with crap and the surgeon had to physically clean it out. He said it was like cleaning play-doh out of carpet. 👎 Spent 6 days in ICU and another 6 in the trauma unit after having my ribs cracked open to fix my lungs.

We wear respirators in the paint booth. You may have seen a video of us not but it is not an example of the best practice just ease of video

Matt, can talk about electronics some time? I want to put on/off switches to each pickup on a three pickup build I’m in process of making. I’m pretty sure how it should go but your imput would be helpful. Thanks and great videos

Thanks for watching Jack, glad you are enjoying the videos. I'll see if Chris can do one like that sometime. We have a few double neck projects coming up and those are full of frustrating electronic bits that I am not smart enough to understand.

What I really like about these is not having a huge bearing getting in the way when you have to route more precise areas. Is that just a downcut spiral bit?
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
Hi Nate, thanks for watching. Yes it is a down cut spiral bit. It is a real game changer not to have to worry about the bearing is. We use pins as small as 1/8 for some of the inlay work that we do it is a really cool tool. I know it is all CNC these days but using these old tools makes me happy.
@swempthebemp
@swempthebemp 6 лет назад
You should be able to make much deeper passes with a half inch spiral, I use downcut and compression bits at work (cad/cam programmer), they'll cut through an inch of mdf like butter. Keep up the good work, loving your vids!

Awesome awesome vid!!! Powerful unit. What are your thoughts on cutting guitar bodies and necks using a pin router?
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
Hi Victory Guitars, thanks for watching. We used to use the pin router for bodies and necks exclusively then we got the shaper with the SHELIX cutter. We still use the pin router for parts that we cant get to with the larger tool. If you were only going to have one it would be the pin router... no question about it. I have lots of videos about each tool if you have any questions that remain unanswered please let me know.

Hello Matt, Tony with T & T Customs of Bakersfield Ca. here. I recently found a great deal and purchased my first Pin Router (RU Long SR-550 practically identical to your JET.) I could use a little advice on the best cutters for it. I'm working to get it set up to do neck pockets and cavities primarily. What say you? Thanks in advance!

Hi Tony, nice score on the new pin router. We have used spiral cutters and straight cutters, they all work great. Let me knowhow it works out.

@@TexasToastGuitars Maybe you can help me. I lost power to my pin router while the spindle was down and now the machine will not power back up. Ive checked all the usual things including the reset button, but to no avail. Machine was operating perfectly prior to the power loss. Not a lot of info to found on the innerwebs. Any suggestions?

So are you lowering/raising the bit with a foot pedal? Good vids- thanks!
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
Yes, but wait, there's more LOL. There is an over all adjustment arm that has 4 inches of travel, that is raised and lowered by a hand crank on the side. There is also a pneumatic ram that is operated by a foot switch it has a throw of 3 or 4 inches and several stops on a wheel that can do repeatable positions. Depending on the thing we are working on we use both to raise and lower. Thanks for watching Tioga.

How high do your pins stick up from table? Got a pin router without pins so need have some made. Thanks
@TexasToastGuitars

The pins ride on a mechanism that raises and lowers them. I think the maximum is 1/2 or 5/8

Thanks, mine is the Shop Fox I imagined that I will need to just make them tall enough to thickness of template.

Hi Neal, I don't really know what they are going for these days. They aren't exactly making this unit any more. If you found one locally and you really want it... I'm afraid it's a sellers market

Routers don't create very much dust unless you use a weird bit because they shave the wood like a chisel, instead of sanding it. i think if you have a filtration device for the fine particulate in the air that accumulates over time, and you vacuum or sweep occasionally, that is all you need... the light looks foggy in the video, which suggests that there are fine particles in the air. if you use something like a grinder with a flap disk, the dust is super fine and only then I would personally use a respirator while working; unless the wood is toxic, then i treat it a bit differently. i know you just complained about people calling you out for improper safety equiptment use, so i had to say my own... :P the thing about opinions is everyone has them. however, you shouldn't be upset with it when they say stupid shit. Instead, you can look at it as an oppritunity to teach them, or you can simply ignore it. I realize that you use your youtube channel to vent and sort of affirm your ideas though, which isn't really bad; seeing how people react to certain things can be educational. however, the reactions in themselves tel you how the audience thinks, not nessicarily how you should think. the pin router you have is pretty neat btw.
@islanderwinder
@islanderwinder 6 лет назад
Depends on what you are routeing . Guitar builders pet peeve is routering or sanding MDF ....if you have done any of the guitar building without a mask you will soon realize & feel it in your lungs what really effects you . routering pickup cavity or body shape may not be the same as sanding as you will see wood dust residue around your breathing mask .
@5hredder
@5hredder 6 лет назад
i dont use a mask when i route. mdf is not fun though, and i would recommend using one in that case. however, there are alternatives, and mdf isn't actually used in the constrction of a guitar, only it's template. you say this as if to assume i havent done a thing with wood in my life... i have guitars that i have custom engineered from the ground up, even changing the body style drastically so it looks like nothing on the shelves, but it is functional and doesnt lack meat. I then hand built these guitars with grinders, a router, chisels, and a bunch of other shit... the thing with mdf is because it isn't fibrous wood, it kinda just powders up, and the epoxy in it is toxic. To your defense though; my router is a triton plunge router with 3.75 hp... it has clear window guards that shield me from debris. if you want to know exactly what it looks like, the crimson guitar guy (ben crow) uses the same exact router in some of his builds... his videos taught me most of what i know technique wise.

I do not get upset I make videos and call them out. I don't see it as my job to take advantage of teachable moments but rather to make videos I think are fun. I don't make any money doing this I just have fun doing them.

I as well get annoyed by all of the safety knotsies tryna come into videos and tell people they're "DOING IT RONG!!!" I'd imagine them in their shops, wearing a suit of armor; but they probably don't even have a shop. Screw 'em. Do it your way.
