It's a beautiful car, even now some 23 years on when the first Rover 75 rolled off the production line it still looks modern compared to other cars of its age. I have two of them. So sad watching this video of a once forgotten model.

It's such a shame seeing Longbridge now, I think what people misunderstand is, this wasn't just a factory, this place had/has a lot of heritage, from building war planes, cars and being the centre of the British car industry, Longbridge had a huge role! Interesting fact, Longbridge was the U.K's only self contained car factory at one point, from raw materials being transported in by lorry or train and then a car being the end result, car plants used the 'just in time' method with various parts made elsewhere and delivered just in time. It is sad as I would have loved the opportunity to see Longbridge in its former glory, now I'll never have the chance. When was this made exactly? as I am intrigued.

I grew up on fountain close, over the tracks from the plant, and to see it's demise is honestly heartbreaking.

This was filmed in May 2001, not long after the launch of the 75 Tourer and a short while before the launch of the Z cars, I miss working at the plant, often I wish I could go back and see it again.

@sloeginandsleep1170
@sloeginandsleep1170 Год назад
@@davidhealy4534 Correct. The F was still in serial production until early Aug 2001, Production then slowed while the TF early build came on stream, which hit full tilt in September 2001. Last F's came off the line in first week of September.

I worked at the Holden (GMH) Engine factory in Fisherman's Bend, Melbourne, Plant 16. (1990-1992) I suspected that the industry might be doomed even before I started and when inside the culture it only confirmed my doubts. Still I wanted to have the experience of being in industry - manufacturing industry. I was surprised that it lasted another twenty - twenty five years. It employed about 20,000 in the 1970s and just less than 3000 when I started in 1990. The Australian consumers chose Japanese in the 70s, 80s, then European in the 90s - 00s. We sold engines to Korea for a while, but always the lower scale ones. Single cam. We had a foundry and poured steel, but never aluminum. We made 4-cylinder engines from scratch, low tech and assembled Buick V6s from boxes plus made old school V8s on a smaller scale. Subsidies kept us alive. Unions and government, government and industry bargain hunters. By 2016 the Aussie car industry was doomed. In '17 it died.

Clarkson thought it was hilarious to mock "Midlander built" cars and do a "Brummie accent", but it had an effect. Drip, drip, gets in people's heads. I'm surprised Hammond, who grew up near the Land Rover plant, didn't stand up for his fellow Brummies

Why? I have four british cars. My oldest one is a MGA from 61. I have it for 30 years now and it broke down only one time. The distributor cracked. Since then, no problems at all. I also have a triumph gt6, a triumph stag and as daily driver a Jaguar xf. I have never seen such a beatiful design elsewhere.... And if you service the cars regulary you will be rewarded with a very reliable car.... Maybe Im to enthusiastic in these cars, but i still love them. Hias 75 It is great to be a fan of British cars, I own a 97 xj6 jaguar ( x300 ) and I love it, but Germany has given us BMW, Mercedes and Audi to name 3. The VW is a motoring legend. The closest I have ever got to German quality was a mk2 Granada. Your English is fine by me, my comment is respect at the great cars your country has produced. I also love the Daimler. Respect have a great new year.

Thank you. Also to you and your familiy all the best and health for the new year. I agree in some points. German cars were reliable in the past. I had three mercedes (w115, w123 and a w210. All diesel with 200 ccm). The best was the w123. Built like a tank. The worst was the w210. Bought new and rusted away within five years. After that, i bought finally my Rover 75 2.5 celeste. One of the last. I loved it and still I do. Great design, great interior and a very smooth and reliable v6 engine. The only parts, that made problems were from BMW or influenced by them(inlet manifold). Unfortunately i had to sell it :-(.

The destruction of British Engineering was a reflection of the steady trajectory of decline in Britain's fortunes following the abandonment of the post WW2 consensus. Harried along by Thatcher who exported millions of highly skilled jobs abroad, rather than encouraging employers to invest in modern production techniques and equipment. The tragedy of the Rover story is that it was BMW who invested £3 billion in the R75 concept, but it was too late. Overseas volume car production had outpaced Longbridge. The R75 was the best car that Longbridge had ever produced. Then BMW walked away and sold the lot to a bunch of plonkers for £10. It was too late for MG Rover to recover it's position as a volume car producer. Despite the best efforts of everyone who worked at Rover, Blair's govt refused to support this last bastion of home grown engineering talent. The destruction of MG Rover was an avoidable tragedy, but the prevailing view was that Britain could survive on the basis of a service economy, and credit, supported by Casino Capitalism. Wealth has to be created, and that means manufacturing things from blocks of raw materials. It does not come from a gig economy, rising house prices and easy consumer credit. Truss wants to continue and accelerate Britain's decline. The closure of the Rover plant was just another avoidable step on the road to penury for our country. If Labour were a serious alternative to the nonsense peddled by the Tories it would be putting forward policies to encourage the return of millions of real jobs that have been exported since the 1980's. That would really help workers and real businesses. Instead, they want to sing the national anthem and get back to the Casino Capitalism that helps no-one apart from the super rich. It's about time someone gave all the main parties a real lesson in patriotism.

At Last someone who tells it as it is! We have a serious problem it's the system which keeps promoting short termism and the concept of making something is a "dirty job" but the real scandal is how successive govt red and blue have priced out our economy in comparison to others making it unviable to make anything in volume in the UK, but we the electorate keep voting in the very same useless failures in every time who are clueless and are mostly occupy intellectually the lower levels of the elite educational establishments, seriously would you employ any of them? interesting that they all end up in the houses of parliament pretending to solve our problems but in reality have no compunction to destroy and render this great country to the dustbin for their own personal gain!

Adam Parker I had the MG ZT cdti. Was a mint, 2004 model fabulous, car. However when one of the fuel pumps failed I had to scrap it (Got £600 in px for a Jaguar). The diesel pump in the tank is heat sealed and the only way to replace it is to break it open or replace the whole fitting. Only problem was there are no second hand ones. They were all fitted to the last batch (of which mine was one) and no spares manufactured. They were an Audi modification in tank and BMW modification in engine! It was off the road for three months waiting to see if a spare became available! No luck.

The fuel pumps are readily available off the shelf as are pretty much all the spare parts. These cars need a specialist garage who understands them. A few garages said "cant get the spares mate" but a specialist ordered it and fixed it.

eastwood978 You're correct. Fuel pumps are 10 a penny (well £25). The issue was the fact that the housing (in-tank mounted) was heat sealed. That would have had to be broken to get the pump out. There were none of the modifield housings available. The only other option was to link a pump in parallel and modify the cable arrangement, itself a complicated issue. The garage were an MG/Rover dealership whom I have used for 25 years. I inspected the vehicle myself on the ramps. It was a hopeless case.

@@waldenhouse changed plenty of these over the years. They are a cross feed setup and awkward to do. Many garages know this and wont touch them. Never had any issues getting replacements

Such a shame. Sold by people who couldn't give a damn ( British Aerospace, who could have made even more money on the brand if they invested more into it) to Germans who couldn't give a damn & sold to a bunch of asset-stripping bastards called the Phoenix Group. It's sad as if I had the money, I'd of bought it & tried to make it as good as the luxury German cars.

If only that other buyer had got rover instead of them clowns that ran it into the deck. He would have probably turned it into a sports car maker like lotus. He would have cut back on staff but in confident they would still exist now. Surprised the phoenix consortium lasted as long as they did with no new models during there time

armjos1 The Phoenix Four stitched up Blair too mate. They agreed to keep production going but they syphoned off cash into their bank accounts & did secret deals with the Chinese. The problem with the UK is, industrial laws: Token staff councils ( if any in some places?)lack of white collar employees as union members, etc. In Germany, unions go up to the very top of society & they always sit on the board of directors. Had we had this in Britain, the Phoenix four would have been kicked in the balls big time. This is why BMW is still German.

Let's face it BMW got all the know how for their X5 and MINI from both Land Rover and Rover it's self, then threw the company aside. If VAG on the other hand owned MG Rover they would have done the same thing as they had to Skoda, SEAT and Bentley and developed all three car manufactures into world class companies. BMW made up a load of lame excuses of losing money on MG Rover (funny how they still had money to launch new BMW models and buy Rolls Royce etc. And yes, Tony Blair did not care about British industry. Remember Foden was killed off by the Americans, whilst ERF was put to sleep by it's German rival MAN, notice how nearly all the petrol tankers in the UK now have MAN trucks, strange that. God bless Tony Blair and his magic band. (sic)

The nearly bankrupt BMW made the Hansa Group (Borgward, Lloyd to name but two of the groups companies) go bust due to creative bookkeeping. Funny that. Yes I remember the 1970's, three day week, power cuts, the unions holding Britain to ransom by going on strike at a drop a hat and building poorly built cars that should have been world class (bar the Marina, a rather dull car based on 1940's/50's engineering).
