Currently restoring my v8 rover p6 so plenty of content in your channel for me. Never really had anything to do with v8s in the past.👍

I have a Freelander in for a straight pipe job. I put a teaser video up yesterday and put a card and a video link to your Freelander video series. I will do the same with next installment. Happy to give you a mention because your video style is great, none of this practiced and polished stuff. Just tell it like it is, swear like a mechanic swears and as often and of course you are not in a mint, pretty, perfect garage with tools and gear that never does real work! Love the Rover V8. So more on these please and of course, more Freelander bearing videos! Top regards, young man. Jon.

Like in the electrics video, it is really nice to see everything measured up correctly. With the time it takes and the typical Land Rover owners' reluctance to pay... I wonder how many rebuilders can afford to do this...

Years ago it was a 215 CI aluminum Buick.
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics 4 месяца назад
evolved slightly from the Buick original. ironically once Rover had bought the rights Buick wanted Rover to supply them! Rover couldn't make enough for their own use though

actually not homie! The early Rover aluminum V8's were the best and most reliable, as time when on and Rover modified the little Buick more and more it degraded in reliability until the last models were deemed as "fragile engines" As Rover punched out the displacement from 3.5 their motors were plagued with serious casting issues, cylinder cracking problems, water and oil leaking problems and on and one! Rover had to literally inspect each block and separate the best ones from the just ok ones and the bad ones. The last were sent back for melting down of course, but what once was never a problem with the original Buick blocks became the major problem for Rover! Rover struggled to get it right after they started modifying the little Buick they had purchased! @@williamhelms9942

Great video, interesting stuff. I like the Rover V8, it is compact, powerful and sounds awesome.
@sidecarbod1441
@sidecarbod1441 8 месяцев назад
They are not very powerful, it takes a shit load of work to get any real power out them. (Don't believe the likes of TVR and their BHP figures). I've worked on a shed load of these engines, the last one I built had a load of work done to it but I'd still class it as 'road spec', it was a 4.6, it knocked out 315 BHP on the rollers. It would cost a fortune to build one to a semi race spec, the pistons are cast so they are no good, the dished crown design is an issue, the rods would need changing and the valve train can not take high RPM, it needs more than valve springs to sort it out. Don't get me wrong, I like these engines but they have issues, cracked blocks, slipped liners, head gasket issues due to the 14 bolt head design, main bearing cap fretting if they are not a cross drilled block. I guess I just don't look at them through rose-tinted spectacles! 🙂

Hi Richard, did you find what the problem was with the engine? I’ve got a very early 4.6 that’s burning a lot of oil…… changed the valve stem seals, only burns oil under pressure. So stripping down to the bear bones, my pistons look like yours. How do you get the spec sheet please 🍺🍺
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics 4 месяца назад
Drop me an email, this engine just needed building up as per spec. The build sheet I am using is ages old and was related to the high compression v8 in the Rover p6. A half decent machine shop will be able to help you with spec for the 4.6.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but as the cylinders have been honed, isn't it correct practice to replace the rings to insure a proper seal? IIRC new rings are coated somehow to bed in quickly... thoughts?
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics 3 года назад
It is indeed. To be honest the time taken to refit a used part and find it not fit for purpose outweighs the cost of a new part! So long as it is not made from a dairy consumable such as cheese 😋

I heard that today's spare parts are of very bad quality, like camshafts lifters and bearings so if the old part is good maybe better to use that 🤔

Hello!! I'm about to build a LR v8 3.9 engine!! And I have a question!! The brand of the pistons on the left side point forward and those on the right side point backward? (LR V8 3.9) thanks
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics 4 месяца назад
many because the conrods face each other for each big end journal i.e. 1,3,5,7 all face one direction, 2,4,6,8 face the other. There is a machined face on each conrod that must face against another machined face n it's neighbour. the pistons, if marked, should all face forwards. The Workshop repair operation manual has it all detailed beautifully. Drop me an email if you have any questions about it.

Having birds in and around your work shop is probably delightful , but the mic picks up the sound and is louder than you at times a bit irritating really

That was my old, start up workshop in my dad's barn. More irritating was the dive bomb attacks and everything covered in swallow crap. Idyllic and ideal are some way apart
