David M I was just going to say the exact same thing! I'm American and I relate more to this song than some so-called American patriotic songs. I've cried to this song. I always put it on rotation with my portable player when I go to Europe. I always play this song when flying into Paris. What a feeling! Beautiful moments. Beautiful.
.....true Art is generally a very elusive thing, until it breaks off it's chains and lands in our laps " Like a Hurricaine " and shocks and surprises all of us willing to listen. Brian Ferry always has that potenciall to do this....and here he does it Again. !
This track to me is Roxy's masterpiece. It feels that Ferry wrote this years ago and waited for the right time to include it finally on the 3rd album. It is a beautifully written ballad that has a pure continental feel about it and interjected with french vocals. Clearly to me this sits at the top table of all the work they've done.
As a Roxy Music fan I sit here and think of my wife I lost five years ago , to a brain tumour, I will have this song played at my funeral, It is as bitter sweet as any of Shakespeares sonnets, to me.
@David Spooner; May God be with you in your sorrow David. He has a reason for everything though oftentimes we don't know it is. 1. "There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. 2. A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. 3. A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. 4. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. 5. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. 6. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. 7. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak. 8. A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace. 9. What profit is there to the worker from that in which he toils? 10. I have seen the task which God has given the sons of men with which to occupy themselves. 11. He has made everything *[Lit beautiful] appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end." (Ecclesiastes 3.1-11.).
That`s powerfull. I can understand your heartache although it is 12 years now. I lost my love 8 years ago and some songs have her sitting right here beside me. Thank God for the great music. Try some Van The Man, He works too. Cheers to the music.
David Spooner... I feel for youre loss... unfortunately every one on here has lost someone near and dear, including me. God grant. you peace and grace to empwer you to your next adventure.
If I had to pick just one song to take with me - this would probably be it . Must have listened to it a thousand times over the years , yet my eyes are still never quite dry at the end !
Bryan Ferry's style of singing a romantic song is simply breathtaking. A God-given talent and a masterpiece composition of music teamed with beautiful, romantic lyrics. He seems as timeless in this video as he was in 1973 when I purchased his first album. All I can say is that as an "old-40's type crooner" the Ladies must've loved him!
I remember All those moments Lost in wonder That we'll never Find again There's no more time for us Nothing is there For us to share But yesterdays Ecce momenta Illa mirabilia Quae captabit In aeternum Memor Modo dolores Sunt in dies Non est reliquum Vero tantum Comminicamus Perdita Tous ces moments Perdus dans l`enchantement Qui ne reviendront Jamais Pas d´aujourd´hui pour nous Pour nous il n´y a rien A partager Sauf le passé
One of my lifelong Roxy favorite songs - Been a fan since the early 70's and seeing them again was fantastic! Have followed Bryan throughout the years and attended all his tours. LOVE THEM ALL. Signed, Virginia Plain
To those who have commented on losing a loved one linked to this piece of music which painted an important verse, chapter, and book in their life, my heartfelt feelings and condolences to each and everyone of you. If I was to lose someone so dear to me (my mum and did) and could pick a piece of music to remember her by, this would be it. Reason - My mum loved Bryan Ferry.
What if this was not a song about love, but about culture? About a hope about "freedom, equality, brotherhood", the idea of the french revolution? Goodbye Europe. 2 minutes to Midnight. Another oldie. Final Countdown. Still another. Waking up was yesterday. 💋
Absolute excellence , been listening to Bryan & Roxy Music since the 70's and this gave me shivers :) how can such a sad song give so much pleasure ? Pure class.....
Cool guy, I used to drink with him, after my shift at the burning tree saloon ....we fought like cats and dogs....he was and is pretty ok.....exellent musician, does other peoples music better....
Saw Roxy on this 2001 reunion tour dont think they ever sounded better, manzanera, mackay, thompson and ferry , the years rolled back, absolutely brilliant, ive said this before one of Britains best groups ever, so talented musicians , under rated
More then just a song about the past and the lost love story, its like a huge métaphore - Europe is lost: no more Europe anymore.. Europe is an a Lady who has gone and will never come back. So sad..
listened for the first time today ,to Johnny Halliday. Old Brown Ferret nailed it.Sometimes the student surpasses the teacher. Bryans song embodies Briel , Aznavore , Piaff and Halliday. Unsupassed in this Genre. Surely Sir Bryan Ferry is in order.
