Take a look at a master, folks. A master. A master guitarist and a master entertainer. A brilliant, jovial mind given the blessing of virtuoso guitar talent. Take a look at history, young folks. It doesn't come this pure that much any more.
This is the exact reason I shared this video. I hope the future musicians of this world take note and never forget to study those who came before you. Educate yourselves in all aspects/genres of music. There is endless inspiration awaiting you.
Roy Clark said, "I think there are a world of better guitar players out there than me, but I can claim one thing, and that is, no one ever had a better time playing guitar than me." I watched Roy on that show when I was a kid and later I really got into heavy metal...but I never stopped listening to Roy...never.
I would have loved to see Roy, Jerry Reed, and Dimebag together. I'd like to think they are sitting somewhere in the heavens and slaying everything with strings.
Everyone talks about how well Roy Clark plays musical instruments but I don't think he gets enough credit for his voice. He's got a great voice and more importantly, you can understand all the words he sings. Go listen to this song by other artists. They mumble half the words. Also, I don't know anyone who seem to enjoy himself more and was such a pleasure to watch.
I saw Roy Clark on the Odd Couple show just the other night. I'm not a big fan of this style of music but this guy is awesome. Who cares who is better than who, just sit back and enjoy! :)
I remember watching this exact clip when I was 8 or 9, and thought Roy Clark was the greatest guitar player and showman, ever! Still to this day, can anyone entertain a crowd like that? The man was on fire that day. Came here to learn this song for a band I'm auditioning for. Just the guitar parts. Got my work cut out for me.
Country musicians never get the credit they deserve, all the praise goes to rock guitarists like Hedrix,Jimmy Page,Clapton,Eddie Van halen and the list goes on and sure these guys are/were very talented but Roy can play just as good as they can yet gets little recognition simply because he plays country music, and there are lots of other great country guitarists like Vince Gill,Brad Paisley and I'm sure I could name a lot more, and the other guy up there looks like he's playing a Rickenbacker.
Here in México there is a song called “polka el circo" and is a classical song among the northern music, specially in my home state, tamaulipas, it's a complete diferent gender, and just today I've known that there original song is this one. "polka el circo" is part of my culture and my roots, and it's quite shocking knowing that is not the original version. However, it shouldn't matter and I have to recognize that this version is great too, and I invite you to hear our version of this song
I am really amazed by roy clark. I have been playing for decades. But I respect him very highly as a supreme god gifted true entertainer musician. Maybe there very best at that art. O what audiences he has entertained, what accomplishments ! Staggering really !.
...I never get sick of this performance- Roy is one bad-ass guitar picker! I listen to this every few months for inspiration, and you'd never think that anyone could get that kind of tone from a Byrdland!
My God! What a trip back in time. Pause it and look at the women in the audience. Those hair styles and the glasses. That aside. Roy Clark is one awesome multi-talented instrumentalist. I loved watching him and Buck Owens on Hee-Haw. Thanks for sharing.
What a musician! Guitar talent on display. What a joyful performance to be seen time and time again. I love my rock gods but as a child watching Hee Haw, Roy Clark was and still is beloved. Rest In Peace dear soul.
I grew up listening to and Watching Roy Clark play - he raised a generation of guitar players. he should be inducted in the Music Hall of Fame ASAP. Thanks, Roy !!
My goodness. This RU-vid is such a blessing for us music lovers who want to see and hear such marvelous performances as this, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed's on Alabama Jubilee. We can actually argue their virtues...this wouldnt have beern possible earlier...Thanks...no, deep abiding gratitude to the inventor of RU-vid! Tom
Hee Haw was a great show- but unfortunately because of it, many people don't realize what great musicians these guys were. Buck Owens is one of the greatest country singers and songwriters of all time. Don Rich was one pf the most inflectional guitarists of all time. And Roy Clark- well obviously the man is a virtuoso of the first order. Not many guys are on that level, (but his friends Joe Pass, Joe Maphis and George Benson certainly are!)
Oh how true and right you are. I actually hated this show because of the stupidity but I'm ashamed to say I never knew how great Clark is until right now seeing these videos as a 50 year old. That show was not really a good venue for showcasing true talent and lots of these guys had it. It actually made them out to be clowns with instruments but that's the farthest thing from their talent. Roy Clark was a cut-up but in a fun loving way that makes the music even more enjoyable. Thanks Roy and all the greats.
That's a good point- i actually read an interview with Roy Clark awhile back, where he talked a little about this. He said that musicians of the old school viewed themselves as entertainers- their job was to make regular working folk feel better, and enjoy themselves. Later on, popular musicians thought of themselves, and were treated like artists. He wasnt saying 1 way was right or wrong, but i thought it was interesting. Even the great poet of country music, Hank Williams, used to cut up and sell bisquit mix! Or how a lot of younger people didnt realize how great Dolly was until she put out some bluegrass albums. (I also think that is one reason why the older stars seem to like Brad Paisley- he's a bit of a throwback, in a good way.)
Actually, though I wasn't particularly fond of the show, it's through Hee Haw that I became aware of Clark and his great skill. I was a Led Zeppelin fan and an admirer of Jimi Hendrix, but it seemed to me that he was a better guitarist than anyone in rock, Hendrix included.
I saw Roy in Vegas a bunch of years back... HOLY S... well, you get the idea. While I hold all of the guitarists mentioned by ragdoll in high esteem, the truth is they are not as talented as Mr. Clark. At his show that night, he did country, bluegrass, blues, told jokes, and even pulled a few rock tunes. He played guitar and banjo, and mandolin, and just tore the stage up!!! Let's see these rock instrumentalists do that.
I am more of a Schon, Lukather or S.R.V. fan simply because I like rock/blues. But damn, Roy Clark smokes that guitar like a cheap cigar. Just for the hell of it, I would love to see Roy Clark throw in some tapping, reverb, T-Bar and harmonics. That would be fun to watch. Roy has my respect. Damned fine musician.
I've always been a big Roy Clark fan. First of all there are a lot of great guitar players here on youtube and I enjoy listening to every one of them and I hold them all in the highest regard. Having said that Roy Clark is a great entertainer. There are a lot of great entertainers but I don't see how anybody anywhere anytime could have ever picked better flatpick guitar than he does. Roy, I've seen you in Vegas and if you're still hanging in there and you read this keep up the good work.
Even to a death metal fanatic, Roy is one hell of a guitar player and one classy dude. Oh, and love the Byrdland The guy @ 1:26 in the blue plaid shirt is loving it
Roy was a great entertainer for sure. He is straight picking the song and that is not the way Jerry did it. Nobody can pick this like Jerry did. Jerry was one of the all time unmatched guitar masters.
I saw roy live in branson at his celebrity theatre and boy was he good. This guy is so talented. I think there must'nt be any musical instrument this guy can't play,
I was gonna post a coment till I read yours... Right on man. I'm also into Metal, Hard Rock and so forth. You took the words outta my mouth...errrr... the letters off of my finger tips.... Peace.
I love this clip....he contributed so much joy to us and is great at all his crafts and man, he's just so damn funny on top of it all!!! Thanks so much for posting this, enjoy it a great deal!!!!
ALABAMA JUBILEE: I always remember this song done by the Ferko String Band from Philly of course. I use to play a set of songs on the accordion, I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover, Happy Days Are Here Again, Alabama Jubilee. I played another song which I can't remember the title with another song called Little Girl. Born and Raised in Philly we went to my Aunt Ruthie's to watch the Mummers New Year's Day at Broad and Snyder in hopes of being on TV Channel 6 WFIL /WPHL. Ferko, Aqua, Greater Kensington, and South Philadelphia. We also watched the King Jockeys, the Fancy Divisions and the parade lasted from 9AM to 9PM. We would go to Aunt Ruthie's to warm up with hot chocolate and have home made Psketties and sauce for supper.
Clark was good but one guy who always impressed me in a sort of underdog way was Jerry Reed. Man, he could really play and you wouldn't think it by looking at him. I mean, he could pretty much keep up with Chet Atkins.
Love the way e sticks out his tongue when he starts picking. Also... if you listen to the scales he playing... throw some distortion on there and you've got a mean solo. But to me... the fact he uses a clean sound and hits all them notes so cleanly is just amazing. How can ya not love Roy Clark? Thanks for posting this. =o)
I love this kind of Guitar playing!...so mood is so uplifting...Long live rockabilly! THe Top 5: Brent Mason Scotty Anderson Albert Lee Roy Clark Danny Gatton
Smokey and the Bandit(top movie of 77 next to Star Wars), Smokey 2, Gator, WW and the Dixie Dancekings, Bat 21, The Survivors, The Waterboy. He wrote songs for and played on Elvis' records wrote songs that Johnny Cash and Porter Wagonner recorded. Recorded instrumental records with Chet Atkins. Enough said!
