I lived in 5 Dowing place for a year in 1981. My wife was stationed in RAF stanmore Park and I was in Chelsea barracks

I still remember with clarity the first day I arrived at Stanmore, 9th Jan 1970. I was still only 16, fresh faced straight out of my apprenticeship at RAF Hereford. I arrived on a cold wet day and after reporting into the Guardroom, I was taken to the temporary accommodation block (shown at 1min 20secs).It was freezing inside and there was no wood for the stove which stood in the middle of the billet.Thus began the best 3 yrs of my life. I loved Stanmore, loved my days off and getting the tube into central London and occasionally going to see a Football match. I also took in a lot of West End shows, tickets provided by the Nuffield Centre just off Trafalgar Square. I often got a ticket for a Box, as these were the tickets that cost the most, and sometimes couldn't be sold, so they were sent to the Nuffield Centre.I'm still sad to look at it today on Google Earth, and see a housing estate.I'm sure it's missed by many.

I was born in Stanmore but emigrated to the U.S. in 1968. My first trip back was with my wife in 1990 with my girlfriend now Wife. Well my plan was to regale her with a tour of where I was born and show her the house I was born in. What do I do but get completely lost. I pulled into carpark at front gate of RAF Stanmore and park. As I get out of vehicle to ask directions I get a very loud and stern order. "You! yes you! get into your vehicle and come over here now!" Needles to say I did that. Pulled up to gate to see a very large bore machine gun pointed at my face. Said very carefully to my silent but golden girlfriend slowly put your hands on dash. A very large looking individual, as they all do with a machine gun said to me "And what do you think your doing?". I stated my intentions feeling very deflated by this time and asked if the gun pointed at us was necessary? In a very British reply came "Fraid So Sir". I said "We are lost to give girlfriend some responsibility". She is crap with maps. He said "well you picked a hell of a time an IRA Bomb had just gone off in London". My answer contained so many ingratiating replies he took great pity on me and let me go.
